      Lion, elephant and boat adventure

      January 13, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Another sound sleep and the kids and I headed off for our 6am safari with guide Matthew and the 4 Germans. Pete opted for a lie in and to rest his back, after we left he had FOMO. Every safari is different and you never know what to expect. We decided to return to the zebra carcass to see who was feeding on it around the area. It was in worse shape than yesterday (smell and look). We ventured further down the track and found the two sisters and female cub. A different spot than yesterday and closer to the zebra (lions don’t usually stray far from their kill). Two kyte birds were hovering near the zebra, keeping an eye on the lions and swooping in for a feed themselves. It was a bit cooler this morning and the lions were all in a row, the cub in a pit. Again, amazing to watch and observe these creatures in the wild. As Ted said, you could stay watching them for hours. They are used to the safari cars that have been introduced that they barely arouse when they approach, only one lion lifting its head when we turned the engine back on again. We then ventured to higher ground for a coffee and muffin break, overlooking spectacular scenery. Continuing on, we came across a waterhole where 3 elephants were enjoying a big drink, learning that they drink up to 150 litres /day. Another elephant wandered down the hill and joined the others. They fell into pairs and began play fighting, incredible to hear the tusks clash in the quiet of the morning. We arrived back to the main lodge for breakfast and shared our adventure with Pete. We farewelled the Germans who were all heading off after breakfast. The girls and I had massages, a wonderful treat and sooo relaxing. Pete also booked in for a back and shoulders massage too. Chilled time playing games, reading and soaking up the tranquility, interspersed with Ted’s YouTube clips. Our guide Matthew did say that Ted could sub in for him due to his knowledge of the animals and their habitat. Instead of a game drive this afternoon we opted for a cruise on the Kariega river. We were on the Kariega Queen, it felt like the African Queen! It was serene and peaceful. We spotted many birds - a huge fish eagle perched high up on the bank, egrets, herons, monkeys and impalas. Ted even had a go driving the boat. As we made our way back to the main lodge, we saw some zebras up close. Dinner was a lovely affair as usual, and I think it was the most delicious yet! Perfectly cooked beef and roast vegetables - the food has not disappointed. We enjoyed stories with Matthew, and Ted added a few of his own (all YouTube based of course) and showed us funny videos of crazy tourists on safari he’d seen, one person even chasing a hippopotamus! Great end to another great day.Read more

      The Big 5

      February 22, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Our excursion to Sibuya Game Reserve got off to a dubious start. Not only did our bus smell so strongly of urine that it made my eyes water, but instead of a guide, we were mistakenly given a Spanish translator and she was not happy about this mistake.

So rather than hear info about South Africa, we spent an hour and a half listening to her loudly complain about this error on her cell phone.

At least it gave me a chance to practice my Spanish comprehension. I now know all about her and her two kids. (They’re doing fine, in case you wondered.)

It was a pretty drive, although I was surprised how deserted the roads were. We only saw, maybe, six other vehicles during our hour and a half drive.

Much to my surprise, the terrain reminded me a lot of Texas as we passed through rolling hills, windmills, and ranchers in cowboy hats driving herds of cattle.

Once we reached Sibuya Game Reserve, everything improved greatly. Our “photo safari” driver, Nick, was friendly and knowledgeable about all aspects of local flora and fauna.

He didn’t just point out mammals, but also birds, bird calls, insects, reptiles, and wildflowers along the way. I had fun checking off as many species as I could on the handy list they gave us.

We also managed to see four of the “Big 5” on our game drive: Elephants, Cape Buffalo, Rhinos, and Lions.

I was amazed at the terrain those land rovers could handle. At times the roads were so steep and bumpy that I was surprised we didn’t tip over!

I write more about our game drive in some other posts, but just so you know, we took a different bus on the drive back to the ship!

      First day of work

      September 29, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

Today was the first day where we volunteers were put to work- but first things first.
We got up at 4 to start our trip to see the sun-up over the Kariega-River: that was magic...and still quite cold...
After watching the sun coming out we went back for a quick breakfast and then to the new pasture to help get wire and razor wire from the previous owner out of bushes and trees, so the Rhinos and Zebras wouldn't hurt themselves. By then it was 30 degrees....
We did that for a couple of hours and then, to cool off, went swimming...on our way back and forth we came across Zebras, Giraffes, Buffalos, Warthogs and lots of others...it was a beautiful and fullfilling day

      Die Abkühlung

      January 16, 2020 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

      Sibuya Game Drives

      January 9, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Game Drives usually take place early morning or late afternoon. In the dawn the animals are more active and the chances to see them is higher than during the day when they are looking for shadow in the bushes and below trees.

We once more were lucky to see the lion in the evening game drive and we also had the chance to see a mummy rhino which introduces her baby to the elephant. It was interesting to see how the elephant reacted because normally rhinos and elephants are not best friends.

The time between eating, sleeping and game drive we spent on the river. Sarah as an active paddler and Cyrill as a more relaxed passenger.

      An Elegant Snack

      February 22, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

Partway through our game drive, Nick stopped at a pretty overlook where we enjoyed a snack of dried mango, nuts, and some chilled white wine. I don’t usually drink white wine, but this was very refreshing.Read more

      Lions will be lions!

      February 22, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

They keep the lions in a separate part of the game reserve at Sibuya. Not only does it have an electric fence, but it has an electrified area on the ground.

As we entered the lion section, Nick told us to speak quietly and move slowly. Quick movements might attract unwanted attention.

“They’re cats, after all,” Nick warned. “And cats can be tempted to chase things that move quickly.”

Just like house cats, lions sleep most of the day. They are hard to see in the tall grass, so none of us could really get a good photo.

“Want to hear a scary story?” Nick asked.

Of course we said ‘yes,’ so he told us about some poachers who came to a sorry end. They were after the game reserve’s rhinos, but ended up in the lion section by mistake.

It was night, so the lions were in hunting mode. This time, however, instead of going after wildebeest or impala, they made a meal out of the trio of poachers.

The next day when one of Nick’s coworkers drove up, he found the lions playing with human heads.

Beyond that, all that was left of the poachers were their guns, and their shoes!
