      Cadiz

      November 15, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

We stayed in El Puerto de Santa Maria which is an over flow town for Cadiz on the northern side of the river. we took the Catamaran into the city for a day of sight seeing.
We took a walking tour and our guide Pablo was most informative and passionate about his adopted city.
The city has a history dating back 3000 years, from the Phonecians, Romans, Visigoths, Moors etc and is multilayered - literally with one set of relic buildings built on top of the previous. We saw phonecian relics, roman ruins as well as the roman ampitheatre which was found by chance in the 1980s.
The city was heavily fortified and much of the old walls and roman gateways remain.
We walked around the peninsular to two old castles and visited the Museum de Cadiz.
Pablo advised us of some good bar restaurants in the old city and we visited Casa Mantika founded in 1953 which did not disappoint. There we enjoyed a wonderful tapas lunch washed down with a glass of local wine.
