    Calo de Formentor cycling climb

    August 30 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

This morning I got up very early to ride up to Formentor lighthouse. I parked in Pollença beach and started my ride. It was very relaxing riding along the beach, not many people out and the sun was just starting to rise. A beautiful start to a difficult climb.

The initial climb up was not as steep as I was expecting but it was longer than I had anticipated. I was to check out of my Airbnb by 11. I didn’t realize there was a climb to the parking lot, I could have just parked there instead. I almost turned back! The ride down to the Formentor beach parking lot was quite terrifying and I wasn’t looking forward to climbing back up. There were 2 women behind me on the descent and they were also just as terrified as me. 🙀

The second part up the the lighthouse wasn’t as bad as the first half but I was starting to get tired. Several beautiful views and chances for photo opps. Since the road was small with sheer cliffs straight down to the water, you really had to plan your stops for safety. 🙀 On one stop a Swiss guy asked to use some of my bike tools and he said he was planing to move to Seattle, so we chatted about cycling life in Seattle.

I finally made it to the top! It reminded me quite like Ventoux, but prettier. Other (mostly men) cyclists were very friendly and smiled, said hello or a nod. The most friendly time of Europe so far 🤣. I didn’t think I could make it back down and up and down again, and it was past 9am. I messaged my Airbnb host to let her know, she was fine and knew I was doing this ride.

The ride down was not too bad. The climb I was dreading wasn’t as bad as I remembered. But somehow I managed to get to my car just after 11am.

All in all, 50 kilometers and 1,077 meters.

After checking out of my Airbnb, I returned my bike and I went back to Pollença beach and relaxed for a few hours until I had to pick up my bags from my Airbnb. Luckily the host was kind enough to let me store my bags until her next guests arrived.

Then I made my way into Palma, stopped for gas-the attendant filled up my gas, very nice. I returned the rental car, unfortunately there were some “scrapes” on the car that I’m sure were there when I got the rental but they insisted. Luckily I paid for the top damage package and didn’t have to pay. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Then I took the bus to my hostel and crashed for the night, another early day tomorrow...boat to Ibiza!!

    Cap Formentor

    August 20, 2012 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C
