  • Castle Howard (Ghost Writer)

    26 de mayo de 2019, Inglaterra ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

Before we hit the Lake District and the beautiful scenery it was time for one more castle, Castle Howard. Since everyone is basically related over here, well at least the royals, it’s not a surprise that the 4th Duke of Norfolk’s blood line from Arundel runs into Castle Howard. This location was a little different, they didn’t have the audio guides that we’ve become accustomed to that gives you so much detail and history, but that doesn’t mean the castle and grounds were any less impressive. Built in the early 1700’s, Castle Howard was thought of as a country house- eye roll- a big country house and was known for the unique central dome above the grand hall. The house has been in the same family for over 300 years, but has been a boys boarding school, a girls boarding school, a war hospital as well as a family residence. In 1940, while a boarding school, a huge fire gutted more than half of the castle. The dome in the main hall crashed to the floor and was almost not replaced. Some 20 yrs later, the dome was rebuilt and the inside rooms devastated by the fire were partially furnished and used in a TV show and a movie, called Brideshead and Brideshead Revisted. We didn’t have a chance to peruse the gardens or grounds as much as Burghley House, but having a chance to tour another magnificent home was well worth the detour from York to fit it in. Check off 6 castles, palaces, or country manors in 4 days! On to the Scottish castles next!Leer más

  • Monk Bar and York Minster

    26 de mayo de 2019, Inglaterra ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Well, I had hoped my ghost writer would carry through more than a single post but beggars can’t be choosers! (you’ll have to guess who if you can by the writing - except I haven’t read it yet, so maybe she tells you, maybe she doesn’t). Anyway, driving back into York was a bit busy, but my driving skills are steadily improving (and will be put to the test later in the day!!!). We had to make a couple of detours and even pulled a “look kids, Big Ben, Parliament moment” but unlike Chevy, I managed to get out the other side and on to our chosen parking lot. Surprisingly, spots were available and after paying for an hour - dumb machine wouldn’t let us add time - we hiked off into the city through Monk Bar and to the Minster. Very cool place, where outside, I was asked to take a picture for a British family. Being the cheeky American I am, of course I obliged! After taking the picture, the gent noticed my hat that said soccer and asked if I played. I responded I did a “long long time ago in a galaxy far far away” and his family told me their daughter was on a full scholarship in the states playing for a small school in Missouri! It’s such a small world. I mentioned that Taylor was also going to play in school and we had a nice conversation even though they had trouble with our funny “accent”. Unfortunately, while we went in the Minster and were able to look down the length, due to having to run back and add time to the car, we skipped doing the tour as we didn’t think we’d have time. In the end, we decided to head out and find the Jorvik Viking center, so while I left the girls in KK’s capable hands, I ran back to the car to add time and get us through the rest of the day. Yay Marty!Leer más

  • Jorvick Viking Experience

    26 de mayo de 2019, Inglaterra ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We enjoyed the town again as we walked through from the minster to the Jorvick Viking experience... surprising enough their were three different Viking characters named Rodney!!! Ok, just kidding, but the staff was great in period pieces. It was Avery neat exhibit with Tay finally getting her ride and getting to see part of the excavated city under a plexiglass floor. We also saw a ton of Viking paraphernalia including swords, jewelry, skeletons (with a breakdown of what their bones said about them) and even some petrified human poop! KK wast entirely convinced that it was human as she was pretty sure it would split a person in half, but the scientists were pretty sure! We came out after the tour to some beautiful sunshine and a cool breeze. From there Denise was itching for something to chew on as we started a trek to Keswick in the Lake District. She was determined we wouldn’t do the “skip lunch as we’ll get to the next place shortly” routine I had pulled after Windsor. We stopped at a Tesco Express, a NCR customer I might add, and got some sandwiches, chips and soda for the road. Fifteen minutes later, we were off, Keswick here we come!Leer más

So, trying to get these blogs in before it’s to late, and already a little behind. Fortunately Sleeping Beauty or GI Snooze as I like to call her wont be banging on our door in the morning! • Almost forgot this bit of fun!

    26 de mayo de 2019, Inglaterra ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Yeah, apparently Taylor is somewhat like her cats that she loves. There is something in her biological clock telling her that napping for 2/3rds of the day is what her body needs! She did get a page or two written in her journal, though KK told me it was just the word Hemsworth written over and over again, explains the drool on her shirt. The good news is that I don’t think she’ll have this problem in a month! I will give the girl credit, she said she can sleep anywhere and I’m starting to believe her!Leer más

  • Lovely place for dinner!

    26 de mayo de 2019, Inglaterra ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

So, our hotel couldn’t fit us in for dinner, and I certainly wasn’t headed back out onto those roads - even though the two pints I had to calm my nerves also sucked enough brain cells out to make me think I could do it again! So we were very fortunate that there is another hotel about a ten minute walk down the road, yes the very scary narrow toad with no sidewalk... to take our mind off our imminent doom, we did what any American would do when surrounded by thousands of sheep, we bleated our way down the road annoying as many of them as we could. Apparently the British cyclist that passed us thought it was very amusing. Taylor said she was embarrassed it I reminded her there was a better than 50/50 chance they had been imprinted on the hood of a Citroen station wagon by now - and they think we’re the fools! Anyway, we made it down the road to dinner and enjoyed a few more pints, an incredible view as some really good food. KK and I had some fresh caught salmon for dinner while Taylor enjoyed a really good fried sole sandwich and Denise enjoyed a scrumptious hanger steak. We also sampled some smoked salmon and fresh bread too! I now remember why I gained 20 pounds when i moved over to live with Jan for 8 weeks! Good thing we are only here for 10 days, or they’d have to tie me to the tail of the plane and pretend they were dragging the Good Year blimp home! Fortunately we are doing a five mile hike tomorrow, provided I can keep KK from leading the pack and having us end up down in Wales! Hopefully we will have some pretty pictures tomorrow of us in the rain and my pants actually buttoned in the front!Leer más

    26 de mayo de 2019, Inglaterra ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Beautiful walk back to the hotel after dinner. Once again, we spend time harassing the poor sheep, this time as the baby lambs tried to sleep next to their mom’s, but we couldn’t resist just seeing if they wanted to play a little - they didn’t other than to run further away from our incessant bleating! It was good preparation for our trek tomorrow, though it will be much longer. Hopefully the weather will hold off as I imagine Denise want be quite so happy should we enter a 5 mile hike with it raining on us 2.5 miles in 😱.Leer más

  • Getting ready for the big Hike!

    27 de mayo de 2019, Inglaterra ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

So, we woke about 9 am, which is starting to become a habit. I keep having to remind myself that is is 4 am back home, so I shouldn’t be to ashamed! We started off with another awesome breakfast and after telling the cook to keep Tay’s order to the children’s menu, we finally got her to finish an entire meal! Look at that, the plate was clean! The downside is that she was ready for 2nd Breakfast about 30 minutes later. Once in the car and hearty baa baa to our friendly sheep (good riddance you annoying Americans is I’m sure what they were thinking - either that or, hmm, I wonder if this grass that hasn’t been pooed on will taste any better! I’m sure it’s one of those two!) we were off and on our way back to Keswick. I’ll let the video’s we posted speak to the harrowing tale of what that three miles is like. Besides the fact that one side of the car has nice black tires while the other side looks like it spent the evening four wheeling down the Globe road after a hard rain, we were otherwise unscathed. Once we found a parking spot and paid for the ticket, another harrowing experience we’ve run into city after city, we set off to explore Keswick and find a grocery store. I figured if I was taking Denise on a hike, I better have some food! A quick visit to the local Co-Op and we were off and running to the trail head!Leer más

  • Time for the hike!

    27 de mayo de 2019, Inglaterra ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Having picked up our food at the local co-op, we started working our way through town to get to the trail head which was near the local aquatic center and park. Of course, the whole way, the questions started flying... are we there yet? Do you know where you are going? How long will this take? I’m hungry? So a quick turn around and a “we don’t have to do this if you don’t want to” was of course met with a “no, whatever you want to do is fine”. This could be a very long day! Soon though, we were at the trail head and as we watched two 12 year old kids with their packs take off up the road, we were energized and ready to head out! We had set a limit of about 5 to 6 miles for our hike - many in the area were 10 to 12 miles - and Denise wasn’t really interested in doing any “hard” trails I had found in my app. So I had chosen a trail that was a little over 5 miles, went to the top of a nearby hill so we could get a view of the lake, was rated medium and seemed like a great day hike as it came back down along the old rail tracks that used to come into town. What I didn’t count on was that the first 2 miles was pretty much all up hill, and some of it was quite steep. We all started off smiling and bundled up but it didn’t take long for layers to be shed as we tried to cool off our huffing and puffing bodies. Taylor, as she should be, was leading the way for most of the journey, with KK in close proximity. Then there was the Mr and Mrs Stay Puff Marshmallow bodies bringing up the rear! The views started to open up as we got into the grassy fields towards the top and were so beautiful. Denise and I even found another gear, although only second, but took off up a steep short cut to catch up with Tay and KK. After a little over an hour and almost 2.5 miles of uphill climbing, we were there. It was so worth the effort!Leer más

  • At the summit, better feed this group!

    27 de mayo de 2019, Inglaterra ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

The views from the top were awesome and the fact the rain had held off and the sky was starting to show some blue was even better. After getting our groupies and Taylors 2,463 selfies, we found ourselves a nice spot in a field away from the peak. As we all scrunched into the only 2 square feet of field not covered in sheep poop, we started to pull out the yummy packed food - raspberry’s, salami, cheese, crackers, short bread, small sweet strawberries, and blueberries the size of, of, well, of those small sweet strawberries! It was a great break, a great lunch, and a gorgeous view. I’m so grateful the ladies hung with and dragged me up the rest of the way. I felt like I was home again, hiking with my family as a kid, enjoying the all the sites and sounds of this unbelievable planet! Of course, there are also some downsides, like Ecoli. Let me tell you about ecoli, dropping a strawberry onto a sheep poop strewn field, does not allow for one to call on the five second rule to allow the berry to still be eaten, no matter how hungry you are or even if it’s the last strawberry. And I want to provide a quick shout out to KK who bravely shook Denise and I out of our disgusted trance, to remind us of what our daughter was getting ready to do. Now, I don’t know if Ecoli runs in sheep poop on the top of 50 degree, wind blown hills, but I know that if you yell out Ecoli when your daughter is getting ready to eat something that has just lain on that field, well, as a parent, you’ll jump too. And that’s why, poor Taylor’s strawberry ended up about 25 yards away and I learned a valuable lesson, don’t let Denise backhand you, or it might be your tooth vs a strawberry laying in that field!Leer más

  • Scotland and finally to Edinburgh

    27 de mayo de 2019, Escocia ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

And we finally made it to Scotland. The drive up the M6 and then cutting over on the small two lane road to Edinburgh was beautiful! While not nearly as tight as the road in Keswick had been, the 60 mph speed limit with large trucks was a little surprising and rarely reached. There was beautiful green country side, small towns, plenty of sheep for Taylor to ooh and aah at (she really wants to be Bo Peep!), and offered a renewed vigor to my beaten down, old body! I feel I’ve done a pretty good job on the roads. The biggest trick is to always have someone you can follow (fingers crossed they aren’t a bloody American like you) and then just drive. That worked rather well until we got into Edinburgh. I’ve managed to avoid a lot of the big cities and for good reason. As we made our way to our hotel - once again, so glad we upgraded cars and got the nice navigation system, she’s been huge and she interrupts Tay’s music and annoys her (just an added bonus for me) - the roads of course became tighter and filled with busses. As we approached our hotel near the city center, it was on the opposite side. I already knew they didn’t have parking and we’d have to pull along the curb to unload before parking, but I couldn’t get there from my side of the road. So we went past and started following the new route to work ourselves back around. As we came to an awkward intersection, within view of the hotel and just before turning onto the busy four lane road across the train station - it happened. I was first in line at a light, in the right lane to make a right turn. But I only had about 100 feet to then make a left turn and I had someone on my left. With no one in front of me, and worried about the guy next to me, I did it, I pulled the ultimate Clark Griswold move and turned into the right lane - into the oncoming traffic just leaving their light!!! Well, as I slowly made my way between oncoming cars on either side of me, trying to get back to the right lane (meaning left side of the road!!), the ladies in my car were all quite calm as they couldn’t scream with their souls already halfway out of the car. Somehow, and probably due to the fact this wasn’t the first time these drivers had to deal with a foreigner doing this, I managed to weave my way over, get in front of the truck that was behind me and now patiently sat chuckling, waiting for me to find my way into the left lane. A couple minutes later, we were parked in front of the hotel, the ladies all bolted, and I got to sit in retrospective thought in the car. Yeah, it’s time to park this car and spend some time in one place! HELLO EDINBURGH!!!

Day 1 Edinburgh- After staying in some cool little B&B’s we check into the Hilton on the Royal Mile. The accommodations on the trip have varied greatly, and have been fun to experience. Driving into the city center of Edinburgh has been eventful and we all decide to put our things in the room and take a deep breath. Since it’s always a crap shoot on whether we’ve had lunch that day we decide to scope out a place to eat. There are tons of restaurants near the hotel, so we scoped out a pub and told the girls we would meet them there, I’ve noticed a few interesting things about eating over here.

    * One, the kitchens stop serving food surprisingly early compared to the states and Spain- (KK told us her normal dinner time was 10:30pm!) **Two, almost all the tables throughout our travels in pubs or restaurants had a designated table #. If you ordered at the bar or with a waiter/waitress your table # was always displayed or referenced in some form or fashion.
***Three, they won’t take your order until everyone in your party is seated with you. This posed a problem our first night when Taylor decided to take a “quick shower” before dinner. We were so excited for her to actually shower we said go for it and we’d meet the girls at the restaurant around the corner. We had to do some fast talking to even be seated in the restaurant section, and then again to order drinks before the rest of our party was seated. We finally got some pints and the waiter desperately wanted to take our order because the kitchen was closing, but the girls hadn’t arrived yet. Nearly a pint in the waiter was getting antsy and wouldn’t take any appetizer or dinner orders until everyone had arrived. We were getting worried they were going to ask us to leave if the girls didn’t get there soon, but 45 mins after Taylor announced she was taking her quick shower the girls arrived.
****Four, your entire order has to be put in at once, no ordering appetizers first and then dinner.
*****Five, they do not clean away any plates until everyone is finished and the check has been payed.
******Six, no additional tips are expected.
*******Seven, if you pay with a credit card they bring the card machine to your table and most patrons utilize a tap and pay system vs the chip and pin credit card we use in the US.

Dinner was yummy, the sticky toffee pudding was to die for, and the king size bed in the Hilton was really comfortable.

  • Heading back down... hope this is easier

    27 de mayo de 2019, Inglaterra ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Having had our fill and having managed to stay away from one of this worlds less pleasant viruses, we headed off back down the mountain. The fact that the temperature had probably fallen several degrees and the sun had gone in, just helped hasten the effort. Heading down was just as awesome as going up - just a lot less sweaty! We encountered all kinds of trails on our way and all kinds of people. Taylor kept saying Keswick was like a ski town, but without slopes, it was definitely a hiking town. The trails were busy, but not overcrowded and you could see people on trails all across the valley and the ranges. It was very cool. After another hour and half, we were back down, having just escaped the rain - which started to fall as we entered back into town. We stopped to get a well deserved vanilla ice cream scoop, where, Taylor had to be informed several times by the guy - “anything that isn’t the homemade vanilla, is a bad decision!”. She really wanted to order from the commercial, prepackaged side of the ice cream truck, the guy really wanted to sell his home made vanilla. I can tell you, he was right, the home made vanilla was really really good, and yes, Tay didn’t eventually relent and ordered the vanilla, getting two scoops to our one just to rub it in! After a quick coffee and a potty break, we were on the road again. Headed to Scotland or so the family thought, I was hoping we could make one more stop, another castle on the border with Scotland that I thought would be neat.Leer más

On our way out of Keswick, we took one more stop at the Castlerigg, a 3000 year old stone circle. As Taylor missed Stonehenge on our way up, and Denise’s friend Patrick talked about his great hike to the stone ring, we decided to go for it. Well, the fact that the great hike was about a 200 yard stroll up through a green field helped immensely! Especially seeing as how our swollen feet weren’t exactly excited to get back into our shoes! But in the end, it was one of those “look kids, Grand Canyon! (Shakes head up and down). Okay let’s go!)... Sorry Patrick!Leer más

  • Carlisle Castle, a quick stop

    27 de mayo de 2019, Inglaterra ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

So I decided we’d try to do a quick drive by Carlisle Castle in Carlisle, right on the Scottish border. It’s the most besieged castle in the UK and was home to Mary, Queen of Scots for part of her imprisonment. I wasn’t sure we’d get there in time, but figured worst case we could walk around the castle and see it from the outside. As it turned out, we got there at 5 pm and it closed at 6 pm. After a quick tour of the wide open parking lot - something we hadn’t experienced a lot of - we made the short trek up to the imposing castle gate. Once inside the ticket office, the action began. Denise was determined to get us in, they were determined that you couldn’t possibly see Carlisle Castle in an hour! In the end, the red haired, green eyed, left handed witch from Johns Creek had them cowering and delivering our $25 tickets - a piece! Pretty sure they were having the last laugh as we left and started touring the grounds! Ok, I fibbed a little there as I was pushing to do it, I figured some part of the tour was better than standing outside. The castle was very cool, having been attended as a military barracks up until the 1960’s. Cars were still traveling through the big portcullis and parking in the outer yard as the buildings there are still in use today. I think one of the fascinating pieces of our visits is to see how these buildings changed and adapted over time to different threats, period fashion and architecture and uses. After the military left, for example, they discovered under the outer yard, a battery that lay at the foot of the gate to the inner yard. They had to dig about 20 feet down to uncover it all. This part of the castle had been hidden for over a hundred years! It was cool to see the main tower and to be able to climb it. Unfortunately, Mary’s tower - where Queen Mary had been prisoner - had been torn down in the 1800’s after falling into disrepair. Still, over all a good visit for an hour side trip. Besides, one of my goals is to introduce the ladies to the many different smells of the UK, and the Carlisle provided something a bit new - and not to Taylor’s liking at all! 😁Leer más

  • Time to visit Edinburgh

    28 de mayo de 2019, Escocia ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

One of the best things about Edinburgh is we stayed 2 nights in the Hilton! It was nice not to have to pack everything up in the morning to get on the road again! With our Royal Edinburgh tickets in hand to visit 3 main attractions, Palace at Holyrood House, Royal Britannia Yacht and Edinburgh Castle we venture off to find the bus. None of us has been keen to make decisions this trip on where to go. We end up heading toward HMY Britannia first based solely on the fact the bus to get there was not as busy as the busses to the other locations.

HMY Britannia was the last yacht in a long list of Royal yachts used by British royalty. It was originally commissioned in 1937 when King George VI came into power, but was put on hold due to the expense of WWII. Queen Elizabeth II commissioned the yacht after her coronation and it was christened in 1953. It has been used for 3 honeymoon cruises, Princess Anne and her husband, Prince Charles & Princess Diana, 1981, and the Duke and Duchess of York, 1986. The decor was chosen by the Queen and Prince Phillip and styled in the comfort of a country house. The furnishings all seem to be original and the most recent addition mentioned was a double bed that was installed for Charles and Diana’s honeymoon in 1981. Queen Elizabeth loved using the yacht for personal and state travels and during it’s 44 years of use it traveled the equivalent of 44 trips around the world. After many years of service, the cost of upkeep and the advances in air travel, the yacht was retired and put on display in 1997. The Royal family still owns and uses the yacht for celebrations. It was recently used to celebrate the wedding of Princess Anne’s daughter, Zira Tindall. It’s also available to rent for private & corporate functions should you have tens of thousands of pounds laying around to spend!

After the tour, which took way longer than expected, we of course were famished. Again, we hadn’t been very diligent in eating lunch as we transitioned from one tourist attraction to the next, so we decided to try out the Tea Room on the yacht. Glad we did, because it was just what we needed in a beautifully, elegant environment. We had finger sandwiches, tea cakes and a glass of wine, ahhh- very nice indeed.

  • Holyrood House

    28 de mayo de 2019, Escocia ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

All fueled up and back on the city bus towards Palace of Holyrood House. The weather was absolutely beautiful with not a cloud in the sky. Definitely not what we were expecting for Scotland, but none of us were complaining. Since Holyrood House is the Queen’s official Scottish residence, it’s closed when she stays there in the summer. We were fortunate to be in town a few weeks before it closes for the Queen’s visit and annual garden party.
No pictures were allowed in the palace and what a shame because it’s full of history and is stunning. The palace was originally built in 1529 for King James V & wife Mary de Guise, parents of Mary, Queen of Scotts. In nearly 500 years it’s been home to dozens of Kings and Queens. Mary, Queen of Scots married her 2nd husband in the chapel, gave birth to her only son, James VI of Scotland / James I of England, and saw her trusted advisor murdered by her jealous husband. Bonnie Prince Charlie held court here in 1745 after a decisive Scottish victory over the English. It was a favorite getaway for Queen Victoria, and Queen Elizabeth uses the palace for investitures and state banquets. It’s been really neat to see so many castles, palaces and country homes, and to see one still in use, by the Queen no less, is pretty fascinating. The palace is huge and imposing from the outside. Although you don’t get to see the Royal state rooms, the rooms you do see give you the feeling that it is a house that is lived in and comfortable.

After the tour we walked around the gardens and grounds which were also beautiful, and saw Arthur’s Seat in the distance.......

  • Up to King Arthurs Seat

    28 de mayo de 2019, Escocia ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Arthur’s Seat has no known historical importance. It’s an ancient volcanic prominatory that is a popular hike that yields fantastic views of the city. Now, whether we had the hair-brained idea to hike to the top because the sun was out, we were still happy from lunch.... and wine, because KK mentioned it was on her to-do list, or Taylor still needed to do some hiking to break in her boots, we decided a hike to the top was in order.

From the palace you can see many people hiking along the ridge and at the top. When you get closer to the start of the trail, it looks pretty high, and you start to second guess your choice to tackle it. However, when you look around, there are tons of people, old and young alike, and the start of the trail is paved. Well, all of this is very misleading. This is not an easy trail and all those young and old people didn’t make it to the top! There was even an ambulance that had to be called to extract a young hiker from the trail via a stretcher! What had we gotten ourselves into here? I’m not ashamed to admit that all of us stopped a time or two to “look around and take in the views”. About 35 mins later we made it to the top, and the views did not disappoint. Stunning 360 degree views of Edinburgh- in one direction Edinburgh Castle, down below Palace of Holyrood House, amazing landscapes all around, and still in full sunshine! We took a minute to look around, but we had a very full day already and we had tickets for a ghost tour in a few hours so off we went traipsing down the mountain. The girls took the same route down, us adults went through the spongy grass that was easier on our old joints and off the beaten path from all those other hikers. We hustled around the palace to get to the bus stop in time to catch the last bus of the day. We were all thankful not to have to walk the mile back to the Hilton.

  • Finally, into the haunted vaults!

    28 de mayo de 2019, Escocia ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Edinburgh is known as one of the most haunted cities in the world, so what better to do than go on a ghost tour! On an already packed day, we booked the last ghost/ city vault tour of the night at 9:30pm. There are so many to choose from, but we went with the recommendation of the concierge at the hotel and the meeting spot was right around the corner, yay! The tour was a little campy, but was full of history, good stories, and a pint of ale at the end! One would think that if you book the last tour of the night you’d get the scary tour, but we got the family friendly tour. Probably a good thing as the girls were scared a couple of times during story time in the vault!

During a story in the vault we kept picking on Taylor, blowing in her ear or softly tugging on her hair. She was already a little freaked out and frustrated that we were picking on her and as we started to funnel out of one room into another through a very small doorway, an older gentleman accidentally bumped into her. She thought it was us and she’d had enough. She turned around and sternly told us, “Don’t touch me again or I’ll punch you”! The only problem was when she turned to say this she said it to this older gentleman and not directly to us! The older gentlemen gasped and said, “Oh my, I am so sorry I didn’t mean to touch you!” Taylor was apologetic and taken aback as she meant this for us, not him and she apologized . KK started dying laughing, and a lady behind the older gentleman turned immediately and pointed at her husband and said, “same goes for you!” Everyone had a good laugh and the tension eased a little bit.

  • Battlefield of Culloden!

    30 de mayo de 2019, Escocia ⋅ 🌧 7 °C

So, we started this morning around 8 am, a little earlier than normal - that’s sad, I know - as we had to check out at 10 am. Denise and I walked down into Inverness to find some coffee for Denise and to get some breakfast as we didn’t include any morning items in our grocery run the night before. Sometimes I think we have this traveling thing down, and then reality hits me smack in the face... I’ve got a long way to go! Really, when I step back and look at it, I’d be in a heap of trouble without Denise. Sure, I can get around England and Scotland on the wrong side of the road, I can figure out logistics of getting from point A to point B, and I can make sure we don’t get lost in any of the towns, but when it comes to interacting with people to find our way, check in, buy ANYTHING, my little lady is my rock!!!! Opposites attract is how the saying goes, but I love that she pairs up with me so well, yet shores up all my shortcomings!!!

After grabbing our coffee’s and breakfasts for the littler ladies, we headed off to Culloden Battlefield - another one of KK’s sites she was hoping to visit. I don’t remember a lot from the last time we were here in 1995, other than it was a relatively big field or bog, that there were flags marking the lines of the troops (at least I think I remember that) and there was some sort of small visitors center. Well, things have changed. The visitor center was huge and the displays and audio track they had was awesome. I probably get a little to into these things, but I hate to miss out on anything. It was really fascinating to trace the timeline leading up to the battle and how everyone was so interconnected. If we’ve learned one thing on this trip - the royalty in Europe makes our redneck family marriages seem pretty tame! Everyone was related to everyone! Crazy! The battlefield was still very neat and Denise and KK got to see the Clan Fraser memorial - I pretty sure they held a moment of silence for Jamie but I’m not 100% on that (if you are wondering about this reference, take a look at the Outlander series of books and TV shows!). After a stroll around the battlefield in the Scottish sunshine (yes that would be mist to us ordinary folks, but I’m convinced it’s just rays of sunshine to the Scots!), it was time to head out to our next location, a little castle Denise found, called Cawdor Castle. Another new check mark for all of us!
