    Art in Santiago

    February 21 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

I love to go to the National art museums in every country. Some are more interesting and inspiring than others. The National Fine Arts Museum established in 1880, is the oldest in South America. I loved how they displayed the paintings without many frames along a single horizontal line. We also went to the Museum of Memory and Human Rights. This museum is dedicated to the events and consequences of September 11, 1973 when Pinochet’s (US backed) military violently took over the government. The country was ruled by this Pinochet’s dictatorship until 1990. Approximately 40,000 citizens were murdered, tortured or went missing during this period. The eye glasses were recovered from a young protester and recreated into a large art piece as a symbol of the violence. The museum seeks to give dignity to those that suffered and to remember the lessons of these events.Read more
