  • Santiago Chile!

    February 16, 2024 in Chile ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

At the last minute we decided to add a stop to Santiago Chile for a week. I’m so glad we did. It’s one of my favorite places so far. Although it is summer and the weather is in the 80’s most days, it is not humid and cools off in the evenings. Distance to the south of the continent makes the days longer too. In many ways, Santiago looks and feels less Spanish Colonial and more 19th century European and modern (Likely thanks to the many earthquakes in the region including the largest ever recorded quake of 9.5 in 1960). There’s an extensive subway system so getting around is easy and quick. On a very clear day you can see the Andes surrounding the city.Read more

With about 6 million residents, Santiago is the capital of Chile and sits west of the Andes Mountains. Summer (February) is warm and dry but starting to end. Although the days are still long, the mornings and evenings are cooler. We didn’t plan to go to Chile originally but I am so glad we did. It’s been one of our favorite places so far. It has a great public subway system that makes getting around easy. We explored the city center which has most of the remaining historic buildings. Like Lima, Santiago has suffered many earthquakes over the years destroying many of the older buildings. In fact, in 1960 Chile experienced the largest earthquake ever recorded at a magnitude of 9.6. After walking and exploring, we found an old style diner for lunch and I had a traditional style chicken soup. Since we are only in Santiago for a week, we ate most of our meals out.Read more

I love to go to the National art museums in every country. Some are more interesting and inspiring than others. The National Fine Arts Museum established in 1880, is the oldest in South America. I loved how they displayed the paintings without many frames along a single horizontal line. We also went to the Museum of Memory and Human Rights. This museum is dedicated to the events and consequences of September 11, 1973 when Pinochet’s (US backed) military violently took over the government. The country was ruled by this Pinochet’s dictatorship until 1990. Approximately 40,000 citizens were murdered, tortured or went missing during this period. The eye glasses were recovered from a young protester and recreated into a large art piece as a symbol of the violence. The museum seeks to give dignity to those that suffered and to remember the lessons of these events.Read more

    February 23, 2024 in Argentina ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Santiago definitely has a more European feel to its architecture probably because there is less adobe and the buildings are newer. Here are a few random photos of our exploration of the city. It’s hard to tell but the food is a traditional sandwich (a bit like a Philly cheesesteak) with enormous amounts of avocado and mayonnaise on the side. The video is of the Presidential Palace.Read more
