  • Dog Head Fire

    Driving to Albuquerque yesterday we saw smoke from the Dog Head Fire. The fire has burned over 17,000 acres. These photos were taken today, several miles east of Albuquerque.

  • Miraculous Staircase

    Yesterday, we took the pre-1937 alignment of Route 66 up to Santa Fe. This morning we stopped at the Loretto Chapel to view the Miraculous Staircase. It was constructed in 1878. The identity of the builder and the physics of its construction are a mystery. According to the literature, the staircase has "two 360 degree turns and no visible means of support." Here, we had a "Small Deaf World" moment. We met three deaf women, who were also touring the chapel. (Photo with them is on Facebook).Okumaya devam et

  • Glenrio

    From Tucumcari, we continued on the route to Glenrio, which sits on the stateline between New Mexico and Texas. From what we could tell these buildings haven't been occupied in years.

    Our last stop before continuing on to Amarillo was the small town of Adrian. This spot marks the midpoint between Los Angeles and Chicago on Route 66.

  • Washita Battlefield National Monument

    Towards the end of the day, we stopped at Washita Battlefield National Monument. On November 27, 1868, Custer's 7th Cavalry attacked the village of Peace Chief Black Kettle. The majority of inhabitants were innocent women, children and elders. Many escaped to the Washita River, but were eventually captured and imprisoned at Fort Hayes, Kansas.Okumaya devam et

  • Fort Reno

    During today's drive we stopped at Fort Reno. The fort began as a military camp in 1874 during the Indian Wars. It was later used as a POW camp for captured Italian and German soldiers during WWII.

  • Route 66 Highlights

    During our drive we stopped in Arcadia, Oklahoma. There, we stopped in at POPS, a roadside attraction with over 700 kinds of soda. We also saw an historic round barn constructed in 1898.

  • Forest Park

    Before leaving St. Louis we stopped at Forest Park. In 1904, the park hosted the Louisiana Purchase Exposition (World's Fair) and the Summer Olympics. We hiked one of the trails and saw the World's Fair Pavilion, which was constructed in 1909 with funds from the 1904 World's Fair.Okumaya devam et

  • Cahokia Mounds

    In the afternoon we visited Cahokia Mounds. At one time this was the largest city in North America, with a population of nearly 40,000. It's now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While there, we saw reconstructions of the stockade wall that once surrounded the city, the earthen mounds that were originally constructed by the city's inhabitants, and a reconstruction of their calendar -- Woodhenge.Okumaya devam et

  • Old State Capitol, Springfield, IL

  • End of the Route

    After 2,190 miles and 21 days, we arrived at the eastern terminus of the route in Chicago -- Jackson Street and Michigan Avenue. We also continued on to the route's pre-1937 end on Lake Shore Drive. We had an amazing time "getting our kicks on Route 66."Okumaya devam et
