    Nun also Japan.
    Nachdem ich mit der Fähre erst abends in Fukuoka angekommen bin und es geregnet hat, habe ich außer Abendessen nicht viel gemacht. Leider regnete es morgens weiter, weshalb ich nur ein paar nahegelegen Tempel und Schreibe besuchen konnte.

    Aber zumindest konnte ich Hakata Ramen kosten, sehr gut!

    So now, Japan.
    Since I arrived in Fukuoka in the evening by ferry and it rained, I didn't do much apart from dinner. Unfortunately, it kept raining in the morning, which is why I only visited a few nearby temples and shrines.

    But at least I could taste Hakata Ramen, very good!

    Hier steht eine der "grossen Burgen Japans", großteils eine Rekonstruktion aus 1960. Ein paar originale Gebäude gibt es noch - u.a. Der Uto Yagura Turm - obwohl das Erdbeben 2016 viel Schaden angerichtet hat. War trotzdem toll, die Anlage zu sehen. Nachdem man im obersten Stock rundum auf das Land geschaut hat, wundert man sich auch nicht mehr wieso dieser Ort für die Burg gewählt wurde.

    Die lokale Spezialität ist übrigens Basashi - Pferdefleisch Sashimi - das ich natürlich gekostet habe. War echt gut! Aber ich mag ja auch Pferdeleberkäse 😅

    Und den entspannendsten Ort der Stadt habe ich auch gefunden: der Kitaoka Schrein. Im Schatten riesiger Kampferbäume kann man hier wunderbar rasten.

    One of the "great castles of Japan" stands here, mostly a reconstruction from 1960. A few original buildings remain - including the Uto Yagura Tower - although the earthquake of 2016 caused a lot of damage. Still, it was great to see the facility. After looking all around the country from the top floor, one no longer wonders why this location was chosen for the castle.

    The local specialty is basashi - horsemeat sashimi - which of course I tasted. It was really good!

    And I also found the most relaxing place in town: the Kitaoka Shrine. You can have a wonderful rest here in the shade of huge camphor trees.

    Nagabeta Straße am Meeresgrund

    Dank Kyushu Railpass bin ich sehr flexibel und habe einen kleinen Ausflug ans Meer gemacht.

    Es gibt hier eine Straße die ins Meer führt. Bei Flut kaum zu sehen, nützen die Fischer die Straße bei Ebbe um Algen und Krabben zu sammeln.

    Daikanbo befindet sich an der nördlichen Caldera-Wand von Aso. Die Anreise ohne Auto/Motorrad ist etwas mühsam, aber möglich (man muss nur von der Bushaltestelle 2 km am Rand der Landstraße entlang gehen).

    Dafür hat man dann einen atemberaubenden Blick auf das darunter liegende Aso-Tal und die Gipfel und Krater des Vulkans, die ein bißchen wie eine liegende Gestalt - angeblich der schlafende Buddha - aussehen. Zumindest von hier.

    Daikanbo is located on the north caldera wall of Aso. Arriving without a car/motorcycle is a bit tedious, but possible (you only have to walk 2 km from the bus stop along the edge of the country road).

    But then you get a breathtaking view of the underlying Aso Valley and the mountains and craters of the volcano which look like a lying person - they say it's sleeping Buddha.    Lue lisää

    Ich hatte echt Glück. Das Wetter und der Vulkan spielten heute mit und ich konnte tatsächlich auf den aktiven Krater Naka-dake rauf. Man wird ein bisschen ehrfürchtig, wenn man vom Rand in den Schlund blickt und weiß dass da nicht nur Rauch und Dampf raus kommt sondern ab und an auch Gestein und Asche gespuckt wird.
    Ganz abgesehen davon dass ich ja gestern am Rand der Caldera war und gesehen habe, welche Landschaften dieser Vulkan durch seine Ausbrüche und ihren Folgen bereits vor (hundert)tausenden Jahren produziert hat.

    Ich habe mir dann das Ganze noch von der anderen Seite angeschaut und habe den Eboshi-dake (1336 m) erklommen (danke Nora für den Tipp), der übersät mit blühenden Azalen ist.

    Zurück beim Hostel dann auf einen Sprung ins lokale Onsen (Thermalbad) ... so entspannend!

    I was really lucky. The weather and the volcano played along today and I was actually able to climb the active crater Naka-dake. You get a little humble when you look into the gorge from the edge and know that not only smoke and steam comes from there, but also rocks and ash are spit out from time to time.
    Even more so since I was at the edge of the caldera yesterday and saw the landscapes this volcano produced through its eruptions and their consequences (hundreds of) thousands of years ago.

    I then checked out the whole thing from the other side and climbed the Eboshi-dake (1336 m, thanks Nora for the tip), which is covered with blooming azaleas.

    Back at the hostel I went to the local onsen (thermal bath) for a bit ... so relaxing!    Lue lisää

    Habe es tatsächlich geschafft, bei meinem teuersten Hotel-Aufenthalt im ganzen Urlaub völlig fertig zu sein (das kommt davon, wenn man im Hostel mit Iren trinkt) und es nicht ganz genießen zu können. Hatte ein hübsches japanisches Einzelzimmer in einem Onsenhotel gebucht inklusive Abendessen und Frühstück und wollte eigentlich vor dem checkin noch durch Beppu spazieren. Aber ich war völlig fertig und habe darum im Park zwei Stunden geschlafen vor dem checkin. Im Hotel war ich dann zwar ein paar Mal im Onsen am Dach (herrlich, diese Freiluft Bäder), aber wirklich gut ging es mir nicht. Und vom wunderbaren Abendessen habe ich nur eine Spatzenportion runter gebracht.

    Aber der Dienstagabend war halt sehr feuchtfröhlich und ich habe mich gut unterhalten. Hätte dieses Strong Zero Zeug von Chris (der Ire) nicht trinken sollen sondern bei Bier bleiben. Hätte ich, ... Der Preis dafür ist halt ein Tag kaputt sein ...

    In fact, managed to get completely beat up before my most expensive hotel stay of all vacation (that's what comes from drinking with Irish people in a hostel) and not being able to fully enjoy it. Had booked a pretty Japanese single room in an onsen hotel including dinner and breakfast and actually wanted to walk through Beppu before checking in. But I was completely exhausted and therefore slept two hours in the park before checkin. In the hotel I went to the onsen on the roof a few times (wonderful, these open-air baths), but I didn't really feel well. And from the wonderful dinner I only brought down a portion of sparrows.

    But Tuesday evening was very boozy and I had a good time. Shouldn't have been drinking that Strong Zero stuff that Chris (the Irish guy) brought. Should have stuck with beer. Shoukd have, could have ... The price for that is being broken for a day ...    Lue lisää

    Gōtoku-ji Schrein & Friedhof

    Da der Schrein ein wenig abseits der üblichen Touristenströme ist, ist es schön ruhig dort. Alles ist voll mit Maneki-neko, Glückskatzen. Am Friedhof kam dann ein wunderbarer Wind auf, der die Sotōbas (hölzerne Grabbeigabe, die zu mehrt bei den Gräbern lehnen) herrlich zum klappern brachte.

    Since the shrine is a bit off the beaten tourist track, it's nice and quiet there. Everything is full of maneki-neko, lucky cats. A nice wind came up at the cemetery, which made the sotōbas (wooden grave goods that lean by the geaves) rattle wonderfully.

    Obwohl ich es leider nicht geschafft habe, kurzfristig ein Ticket für das Sumō Mai Turnier hier in Tokio aufzutreiben, habe ich trotzdem das Stadion aufgesucht und ein paar Blicke auf Sumōtori geworfen, die dort ein und aus gehen.

    Dann war ich noch beim Setagaya Hachimangu Schrein, bei dem sich auch einen Sumō Ring befindet, wo während der Edo Zeit das Herbstfestival - eines der großen Sumo Wrestling Turniere dieser Zeit - stattfand.

    Although I didn't manage to get hold of a ticket for the Sumo Mai tournament here in Tokyo on short notice, I still went to the stadium and caught a few glimpses of Sumotori coming and going.

    Sanja Matsuri

    Das Sanja Matsuri findet jährlich in Asakusa statt. Es verfügt über etwa hundert tragbare Schreine (Mikoshi), in denen Shinto-Gottheiten (Kami) symbolisch platziert und durch die Straßen getragen werden, um den Bewohnern Glück zu bringen. Die Gegend ist dann voll mit Menschen, viele in traditioneller bunter Kleidung.
    Ein Spektakel!

    The Sanja Matsuri is held annually in Asakusa. It has about a hundred portable shrines (mikoshi) in which Shinto deities (kami) are symbolically placed and carried through the streets to bring good luck to residents. The area is then crowded with people, many in traditional colourful dress.

    Ich bin sehr froh, dass ich es nach Tokyo geschafft habe.
    Wirklich Sightseeing habe ich nicht gemacht, aber ich hatte dadurch die Gelegenheit, Clemens (den ich seit 27!! Jahren kenne und der bereits seit 20 Jahren in Japan lebt) und seine Familie zu treffen und das war ganz wunderbar.

    I didn't really do any sightseeing, but it gave me the opportunity to meet Clemens (whom I've known for 27!! years and who has been living in Japan for 20 years) and his family and that was wonderful.

    Weil ich gefragt wurde was ich zurück in Österreich so mache ...

    Bei Marcus' Eltern haben wir den Gartenschlauchanschluss ausgegraben um ihn zu reparieren bzw auszutauschen. Das Abdichten der neuen Anschlüsse ist uns nicht gleich gelungen, aber schließlich und endlich haben wir es hingekriegt 👷‍♀️🧑‍🔧

    Bei meinen Eltern haben mein Papa und ich versucht den Geschirrspüler zu reparieren. Nach halb ausbaun, bisschen verzweifeln und wieder einbauen, funktioniert er wieder und wir wissen nicht warum 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️
    Zweimal waschen hat funktioniert, dann hat er wieder gesponnen und wir wissen noch immer nicht warum. Wahrscheinlich wird er ausgetauscht werden müssen, aber nach 22 Dienstjahren ist das auch in Ordnung.

    UPDATE:
    Das Problem war Feuchtigkeit in der Trockenwanne im Unterbau des Geschirrspülers. Mein Bruder hatte noch eine Dichtung für den Geschirrspüler und wir haben ihn repariert 💪💪💪

    Because people ask me, what i am doing back in Austria ...

    We dug up the garden hose connection at Marcus' parents' house to repair or replace it. We didn't immediately succeed in sealing the new connection, but finally we managed it 👷‍♀️🧑‍🔧

    My dad and I tried to repair the dishwasher at my parents' house. After half removing it from the kitchen, despairing a bit and reinstalling, it works again and we don't know why 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️
    Washing twice worked, and then it stopped again. We still don't know why. Probably it has to be exchanged with a new one, but thats okay after 22 years of service.

    UPDATE:
    The problem was moisture in the drying pan in the undermount of the dishwasher. My brother still had a seal for the dishwasher and we fixed it 💪💪💪    Lue lisää

    Weinwandern in der Wachau

    Weil Österreich ja auch sehr schön ist, haben Waltraud, Heidi und ich einen kleinen Wachauausflug gemacht.

    Am Freitag Abend waren wir nur eine kleine Runde spazieren, rauf auf die Burgruine Dürnstein, wo wir defacto alleine waren. So entspannend.

    Am Samstag hat sich noch Gisela zu uns gesellt, wir fuhren mit der Fähre auf das andere Donauufer, wo wir oberhalb Rossatz einen Panoramaweg begangen sind um bei Weissenkirchen wieder die Seite zu wechseln. Dort dann noch eine kleine Runde um Weissenkirchen auch noch von oben zu sehen, danach gut essen und trinken und mit dem Bus zurück.

    Sonntags noch eine kleine Runde Richtung Unterloiben und an der Donau zurück .

    Die Weine der Gegend, die wir gekostet und das Essen das wir vorgesetzt bekommen haben, waren ganz wunderbar. Zudem war uns das Wetter gut gesinnt, wir hatten wunderbaren blauen Himmel und Sonnenschein bei angenehmer Temperatur.

    Austria is also very beautiful, so Waltraud, Heidi and I went on a little excursion to the Wachau.

    On Friday evening we only walked up to the Dürnstein castle ruins, where we were alone. So relaxing.

    On Saturday Gisela joined us, we took the ferry to the other bank of the Danube, where we walked a panorama trail above Rossatz to change sides again near Weissenkirchen. There then a small round to see Weissenkirchen from above, then eat and drink well and take the bus back.

    On Sunday we walked a small round to Oberloiben and trailed along the danube on our way back.

    The local wines we tasted and the food we were served were wonderful. In addition, the weather was kind to us, we had wonderful blue skies and sunshine with a pleasant temperature.

    Nach Auswintern, nach Wien bringen und zum ARBÖ stelln, zum Mechaniker fahren um Mängel zu beheben, wieder zum ARBÖ bringen um herauszufinden dass eine Schraube bei der vorderen Bremsscheibe nicht passt, wieder zum Mechaniker bringen das fixen lassen und nochmals zum ARBÖ fahren hat Vicki (mein Motorrad, eine Yamaha XJ600 aus 1996) endlich ihr Pickerl.

    Debbie (Marcus' Motorrad, eine Yamaha XJR1200 aus 1997) war auch beim Mechaniker im Winterschlaf und beim Pickerl (und muss wegen zu hohem Benzinverbrauch nochmal kurz in die Werkstatt), aber endlich sind die zwei vereint.
    Sie passen großartig zusammen 🥰

    Nächste Woche geht's dann, sofern das Wetter mitspielt, auf die erste Tour 😱🤩

    After the winter, bringing her to Vienna and takeing her to the ARBÖ, driving to the mechanic to rectify defects, bringing her back to the ARBÖ to find out that a screw on the front brake disc doesn't fit, taking her back to the mechanic to have it fixed and driving to the ARBÖ again, Vicki (my motorbike, a Yamaha XJ600 from 1996) finally has her badge.

    Debbie ( Marcus' motorbike, a Yamaha XJR1200) has been hibernating at the shop and getting her badge (and has to make a quick trip to the shop again due to high fuel consumption), but the two are finally together.
    They look great 🥰

    Aufregend!

    Seit Tagen packe ich ein und wieder aus, überlege was ich mitnehmen sollte, dringend brauche und was ich zurücklassen kann. Gar nicht so einfach wenn man noch nie mit dem Platz auf einem Motorrad auskommen musste.

    Marcus und Debbie übernehmen sowieso die meiste Last, da er schon so einige Touren gefahren ist und weiß wie er beladen fährt.

    Ich hab keine Ahnung und großen Respekt vor der Straße, doch Vicki wird das schon machen 👌

    Exciting!

    I've been packing and unpacking for days, thinking about what I should take with me, what I urgently need and what I can leave behind. Not so easy when you've never had to make do with space on a motorcycle.

    Marcus and Debbie take on most of the load anyway, since he has already driven quite a few tours and knows how to drive with a load.

    Kurztour Tag 1 & 2: Wien > Rosental

    Ja, das Motorradfahren ist schon anstrengend. Aber voll schön. Leider kann man nicht so gut Fotos am Weg machen, da man ja immer Handschuhe an hat. Und wenn wir Pause machen denk ich oft nicht dran. Sorry dafür.

    Am Donnerstag sind wir von Wien bis Graz gefahren um uns abends mit Freunden in Lieboch zu treffen.

    Am Freitag gings dann weiter nach Feistritz im Rosental, wo wir einen wunderschönen Campingplatz mit großartiger Küche gefunden haben.

    Yes, motorcycling is exhausting. But absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately, you can't take good photos along the way, because you always have gloves on. And when we take a break, I often don't think about it. Sorry about that.

    On Thursday we drove from Vienna to Graz to meet up with friends in Lieboch in the evening.

    On Friday we went on to Feistritz im Rosental, where we found a beautiful campsite with a great kitchen.

    Kurztour Tag 3: Slowenien,Italien & back

    Gemeinsam mit Clara, die wir am Campingplatz kennengelernt haben, und ihrem Motorrad Biene (oder Tiger?) haben wir uns über den Loiblpass Richtung Slowenien bewegt, dort fein Mittag gegessen und dann eine kleine Runde durch den Nationalpark Triglav gedreht bevor wir über Italien wieder zurück nach Kärnten gefahren sind.

    Mein Hirn hatte viel zu arbeiten. Ich bin halt doch noch Anfängerin. Viele Radfahrer, Porschefahrer, viele Kurven, viele viele Kehren. Aber, wir haben anscheinend die richtige Richtung gewählt, denn der meiste Verkehr war in die Gegenrichtung.

    War ein super Tag und so in einer Gruppe zu dritt fahren macht schon fast Motorradclub-Gefühl 😎

    Together with Clara, who we met at the campsite, and her motorbike Bee (or Tiger?) we drove over the Loibl Pass in the direction of Slovenia, had a nice lunch there and then did a small tour through the Triglav National Park before returning via Italy to Carinthia.

    My brain had a lot to do. I'm still a beginner. Many cyclists, Porsche drivers, many curves, many hairpin bends. But, we seem to have chosen the right direction, because most of the traffic was in the opposite direction.

    It was a great day and riding in a group of three almost makes you feel like a motorcycle club 😎

    Eigentlich war geplant, nach Kroatien zu fahren, doch am Weg zwischen Eisenkappel und Grenzübergang Vellach ist Marcus aufgefallen dass Debbie wieder kaum Gas nimmt und wieder Sprit säuft wie noch vor einer Woche.

    Also nach Telefonat mit dem Mechaniker, Herumklopfen ob etwas steckt, runter vom Berg und nochmal rauf um zu schauen ob es besser wird, sind wir recht betrübt wieder zurück nach Österreich, denn so (15 Liter pro 100 km) würde die Reise in den Süden recht teuer werden.

    Die Runde war trotzdem sehr schön, viele wunderbare Ausblicke auf die Berge.

    Morgen dann mal zu nem lokalen Mechaniker ...

    We had actually planned to go to Croatia, but on the way between Eisenkappel and the Vellach border crossing, Marcus noticed that Debbie was hardly accelerating and was drinking gas like a week ago.

    So after a phone call with the mechanic, knocking around to see if something was wrong, getting down the mountain and up again to see if it gets better, we are quite sad back to Austria, because that's how (15 liters per 100 km) the trip to the south would be get quite expensive.

    The roundtrip still was very nice, many wonderful views of the mountains.

    Off to a local mechanic tomorrow...

    Kurztour Tag 6 & 7: Rosental > Wien

    Also auf nach Wien.

    Aufstehen, zampacken, tanken und los. Und Stopp! Um Gas zu geben muss ich plötzlich den Gasgriff mehr als eine Umdrehung drehen 😵‍💫, da stimmt was nicht. Also zum nächsten Parkplatz und schaun was los ist.
    Irgendwie ist das Gasseil aus der Verankerung gehüpft 😱, konnte aber glücklicherweise ohne Werkstatt gefixt werden.

    Dann geht's endlich wirklich los.
    Wir haben diesmal eine andere Route gewählt, machen eine Nacht Halt in Wildalpen, ein hübsches kleines Örtchen zwischen Bergen und der Salza.

    Am Mittwoch dann über Mariazell und die kalte Kuchl - ein typischer Biker Treffpunkt - dann Ramsau, Pfalzau, Tiroler Siedlung und Tulbinger Kogel zurück nach Wien.

    Die Hitze und meine Allergie hat mir ziemlich zu schaffen gemacht, aber das Fahren war super.

    Next Stop, Vienna.

    Get up, pack up, fill up and go. And stop! In order to accelerate, I suddenly have to turn the throttle grip more than one turn 😵‍💫, something is wrong there. So to the next parking lot and see what's going on.
    Somehow the throttle cable jumped out of the anchor 😱, but fortunately it could be fixed without going to a workshop.

    Then things really get going.
    This time we chose a different route, stopping for the night in Wildalpen, a pretty little village between mountains and the Salza.

    On Wednesday we went via Mariazell and the Kalte Kuchl - a typical biker meeting point - then Ramsau, Pfalzau, Tirolersiedlung and Tulbinger Kogel back to Vienna.

    The heat and my allergy bothered me a lot, but the driving was great.

    Fahrsicherheitstraining in Teesdorf

    Nachdem ich den Motorrad Führerschein erst letztes Jahr gemacht habe, musste ich ein Fahrsicherheitstraining absolvieren.

    Gemeinsam mit Stoiko, 7 Anderen, einem Trainer und unseren Motorrädern haben wir uns den ganzen Tag Kurven und Bremswege und die Gefahren die es sonst so im Straßenverkehr gibt angesehen und die richtigen Reaktionen darauf trainiert.

    Es war echt anstrengend, aber ich denke, es bringt schon einiges, im geschützten Rahmen an den eigenen Fehlern arbeiten zu können.

    After I got my motorcycle driver's license last year, I had to complete a driver safety training.

    Together with Stoiko, 7 others, a trainer and our bikes, we spent the whole day looking at curves and braking distances and the other dangers that exist in road traffic and practicing the right reactions to them.

    It was really exhausting, but I think it's good to be able to work on your own mistakes in a safe environment.    Lue lisää

    Ricadi & Tropea

    Marcus hat spontan einen Job am Summersplash in Kalabrien angenommen, um seinem Freund Toni auszuhelfen. Ich hab die Gelegenheit genutzt und bin auch mit geflogen.

    Das Summersplash ist ein Maturareise-Event, hier sind also vor allem 18/19/20jährige. Die haben hier Essen und Trinken fast rund um die Uhr und ein paar Parties. Marcus betreut einen Floor, der wird aber nicht jeden Tag bespielt.

    Darum haben wir den heutigen Tag genutzt und sind mit Toni zum Haus seiner Eltern in Ricadi gefahren, das wunderschön liegt, mit Aussicht aufs Meer - bei gutem Wetter sieht man sowohl nach Sizilien als auch zum Stromboli.

    Später, am Abend, ging es dann nach Tropea, wo es locker 5 Grad wärmer war. Ich glaube untertags kann man die Stadt im Sommer nicht besuchen, weil sich dieser Fels wirklich erwärmt.

    Die Gegend ist jedenfalls wunderschön und extrem grün. Ich verstehe ehrlich nicht warum in der Gegend nicht mehr Tourismus ist.

    Marcus spontaneously accepted a job at Summersplash in Calabria to help out his friend Toni. I took the opportunity and also flew with them.

    The Summersplash is a high school graduation event, so there are mainly 18/19/20 year olds here. They have food and drink here almost 24 hours a day and parties. Marcus looks after one of the floors, but it's not used every day.

    That's why we used today and drove with Toni to his parents' house in Ricadi, which is beautifully situated with a sea view - in good weather you can see both Sicily and Stromboli.

    Later, in the evening, we went to Tropea, where it was easily 5 degrees warmer. I don't think you can visit the town during the day in the summer because this rock really warms up.

    In any case, the area is beautiful and extremely green. I honestly don't understand why there isn't more tourism in the area.    Lue lisää

    Wie gesagt, habe ich Marcus auf einen Job begleitet.

    Die jungen Erwachsenen haben sich ziemlich gut benommen aber leider war die Musik fast immer dieselbe.
    Schade eigentlich, denn das Resort war schön, die Angestellten freundlich und das Wetter perfekt.

    Und dann habe ich Marcus' Drohne fliegen gelernt um sie anschließend im Meer zu versenken. Evt sollte man vor Manöver über offenem Wasser mehr als nur 30 Minuten üben ...

    Nach der letzten Show haben wir dann noch weggeräumt. In der Nacht, bevor es heiss wird. Stagehand ist ein anstrengender Job!

    As I said, I accompanied Marcus to a job.

    The young adults behaved fairly well but unfortunately the music was almost always the same.
    It's a shame really because the resort was beautiful, the staff friendly and the weather perfect.

    And then I learned to fly Marcus' drone and then sink it into the sea. Possibly you should practice more than 30 minutes before maneuvers over open water ...

    After the last show we tidied up the place. At night, before the sun comes out. Stagehand is a hard job!    Lue lisää
