Ein Cenote ist eigentlich eine eingestürzte Karsthöhle, die mit dem klarsten Süßwasser gefüllt ist. Sie kommen in den unterschiedlichsten Formen vor. Die meisten Cenoten findest du auf der Halbinsel Yucatan in Mexiko. Manche gleichen eher einem See, andere sind noch fast komplett geschlossen und erinnern mehr an eine Höhle. Die Cenoten hatten für die Maya eine herausragende Bedeutung. Zum einen gibt es auf Yucatan kaum oberirdische Flüsse und die Karstlöcher waren eine wichtige Wasserquelle. Zum anderen hatten sie eine wichtige spirituelle Bedeutung. In vielen Cenoten wurden Opfergaben und menschliche Skelette gefunden. Insgesamt soll es in der Region über 10.000 Cenotes geben.
