Washington, First Impressions

Washington war ursprünglich nicht geplant, aber warum eigentlich nicht? Das weisse Haus ist wirklich weiss, das Oval Office allerdings gar nicht da drin, sondern in einem niedriger gelegenen Nebengebäude. Viel eindrucksvoller ist aber eigentlich ein grosses Gebäude daneben. Das Dwight D. Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Das Gebäude ist im Besitz der Verwaltung des Weißen Hauses und des Executive Office des Präsidenten. Es wurde zwischen 1871 und 1888 im französischen Second-Empire-Stil errichtet - das Dach erinnert doch sehr an das vom Louvre in Paris. Beeindruckend sind die 4 Etagen mit Säulen aussen. Heute ist es hauptsächlich der Sitz des Vizepräsidenten. 553 Zimmer, 87 x 160m lang, 7 Etagen, 900 Außenssäulen.
Weiter geht’s zum Washington Monument. Das ist der allseits bekannte weiße Marmorturm in der Form eines Obelisken, der sich auf einem Hügel auf der National Mall befindet – einer Verbindungsgeraden zwischen dem Kapitol und dem Lincoln Memorial. Die Bauphase dauerte von der Grundsteinlegung am 4. Juli 1848 bis zum 6. Dezember 1884. Geldmangel, Streitigkeiten und der amerikanische Bürgerkrieg sorgten für einen Baustop zwischen 1854-1879. Die Bauunterbrechung lässt sich noch heute an den unterschiedlichen Qualitäten der Verblendsteine im unteren Drittel im Vergleich zu denen in den oberen zwei Dritteln des Bauwerks ablesen.
Das Abraham Lincoln Memorial ist auch sehr eindrucksvoll. Er thront meterhoch in der Mitte in dieser berühmten Pose, Säulen trennen ihn von den zwei Seitenwänden. In diese sind zwei berühmte Reden eingraviert. Klare und leicht verständliche Worte, gegen Sklaverei und gegen den Bürgerkrieg. Schien nicht der schlechteste Präsident gewesen zu sein. Im Gegensatz zu Jefferson, aber zu dem komm ich ein anderes Mal.

It was built between 1871 and 1888 in the French Second Empire style - the roof is very reminiscent of that of the Louvre in Paris. The 4 floors with columns outside are impressive. Today it is primarily the seat of the Vice President. Impressive 553 rooms, 87 x 160m long, 7 floors, 900 outdoor pillars.
We continued to the Washington Monument. This is the well-known white marble tower in the shape of an obelisk, located on a hilltop on the National Mall - a straight line connecting the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial. The construction phase lasted from the laying of the foundation stone on July 4, 1848 to December 6, 1884. Lack of money, disputes and the American Civil War caused construction to stop between 1854-1879. The interruption in construction can still be seen today in the different qualities of the facing bricks in the lower third compared to those in the upper two thirds of the building.
The Abraham Lincoln Memorial is also very impressive. He is enthroned meters high in the middle in this famous pose, columns separate him from the two side walls. Two famous speeches are engraved on them. Clear and easy to understand words, against slavery and against the civil war. Didn't seem like the worst President.
