• Staniel Cay to Cambridge Cay

    6–9 mar 2024, North Atlantic Ocean ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

We left Staniel Cay on Tuesday, March 5 after going to lunch at Staniel Cay Yacht Club and went to Pipe Cay, which was a short 2 hour motor. It was a beautiful area, looked to be private with a small resort and multiple beaches on one side and smaller “islands”/large rocks with vegetation on the other side. I did not get any pictures of that side as I was on the bow as we tried to find a good place to anchor. We decided it was too shallow and went around the islands/rocks to where it was deeper. We spent one night there and stayed on the boat. We are now in the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park.

We left Pipe Cay for Cambridge Cay the next day around 9:30 a.m .and pulled out the genoa at 10 a.m. Nice day for a sail, winds were from the southeast starting out at about 10 knots and picked up to 20 knots as we got further out in the bank. We were able to get a mooring ball at Cambridge Cay, which is first come, first serve. This was our second time on a mooring ball and we had much better success grabbing it with the boat hook than we did the first time! The tide, surge and winds were calmer for one, Kevin approached it at an angle and speed that allowed me to grab the rope close to the hook where I could bring it up to the boat. After securing the ball we lowered the dinghy and took the dogs to the beach. As we were getting back into the dinghy I felt something wrap around my foot and thought it was prickly seaweed. Then Kevin saw a small crab scurrying away, apparently I got a little to close for comfort and it let me know! Later that day as we were sitting in the cockpit we watched this large charter motor yacht (the Below Deck kind) making its way into the mooring field and motor between our boat and another boat very close. I commented that it was a whale of a boat. I forget the make of the boat but it began with a W so I named it Wally the Whale!

Thursday, March 7 - We began the day with snorkeling in an area we believe to be called the aquarium, but I’m convinced it was not the right area. Nevertheless we saw some colorful smaller fish and coral. In the afternoon we found a trail that took us to the other side of the island on the sound side where there is a massive boulder just offshore, it reminded me of a mini Gibraltar. We walked a good stretch of beach. The path was narrow and sandy, outlined with conch shells. The island was dense with trees growing fruit, palms and cacti. Dogs also got to run in the sand afterwards. The day was warm with low wind but cloudy, which was nice but my laundry didn’t dry 🤨
