Tuesday, February 27 - We anchored at Black Point on the other side of the anchorage from our trip south, this was directly across from the restaurants, about a 2 minute dinghy ride! We went to Black Point Yacht Club for happy hour and saw Ellis and Lisa from Bobbytrap, who we met in George Town. We hung out with them and new friends they met in Staniel Cay. A DJ started playing 80’s music and the dancing begun! It was a fun night.
Wednesday, February 28 - We went to the laundromat and managed to stuff 4 weeks of sheets and towels into 2 machines! Unfortunately the towels did not dry completely but only took 20 minutes to finish drying on the boat lines. We met a young couple from Maine, Karl and Connor, and talked to them for a long time and invited them to our boat for drinks later. They are both consulting in healthcare from their boat and have been cruising part-time for 7 years!
Thursday, February 29 - We took a hike up the island to see a blow hole. The weather is much calmer from the trip down. A lot more boats are coming to the anchorage and it’s crowded. We went to Hightide for Happy Hour where one of the boats organized a cruiser get together and Pauline from one of the boats played guitar and sang, she was quite good, beautiful voice. Then the lady that organized it got up and asked for people to introduce themselves. That was nice as it helped people connect. We mentioned we planned to sail to Maine during the introductions and Kevin talked to someone who is also planning to go and they traded contact information. I talked to the organizer of the event, who was also organizing an event 2 weeks from now, and neither of us cared much for George Town as it was over organized, but yet here she was organizing events in Black Point haha! Maybe it’s the scale of things that’s different.
Friday, March 1 - We now have 2 full months plus of cruising under our belts. We found a place to get free water! A pipe, for lack of a better term, on the side of the road that was obviously government installed. We saw someone filling jugs on our way back from our hike yesterday and Kevin decided to give it a try. A lot more work than GT because he had to anchor out from a rocky beach and carry the jugs up and down stairs and over the rocks. The full jugs are much too heavy for me so he carried both.
Saturday, March 2 - We went for a long walk on the island with the dogs looking for a produce stand and a liquor store but didn’t find either. Then went to Deshmon’s for pizza. There were several Bahamians hanging around outside all drinking beer. It was 11:30 and Kevin made a joke about about beer for breakfast and one replied it was lunch! Kevin walks inside and the only woman outside asked if we needed help. When ordering the pizza we were told it would take an hour as she would need to make the dough; so we placed our order then took the dogs back to the boat. Once back at Deshmon’s Lisa and Ellis walked in and we had lunch with them. That evening we went to Karl and Conner’s boat for a glass of wine. For dinner we went to Lorraine’s for the BBQ buffet and met a nice couple from Massachusetts. They gave us lots of suggestions for where to sail in New England and Maine. They asked if we had a heater on board and out response was only at a marina, they said have blankets ready! 😳 When the fog comes in it gets cold, even in August. Karl and Connor said the boat stays cool because the water is so cold. I may need to retrieve warmer clothes when we go home to get our stuff from storage!Leia mais

Sunday, March 3
We pulled up the anchor around 10:00 am and went about 2 hours to Staniel Cay. We were here before but it was very windy. This time we planned to snorkel Thunderball Grotto, which is from a scene in the James Bond movie with the same name.
Monday, March 4 - We anchored about 100 yards from Thunderball Grotto. We could easily see how many boats were there, so we tried to time our visit with the fewest amount of paid tourists boats. It was very cool, you can easily snorkel in. It’s a cavern with a lot of small fish of various colors, blue and gold, purplish-blue, small zebra fish. Some slightly larger fish, a foot at most. Colorful orange coral. Earlier in the morning we went to the blue and the pink grocery stores. I was impressed with how well stocked the blue store is even though it’s not that large. I got an avocado! And Wheat Thins!!! They were $10.25 for a small box but sometimes you just gotta do it!Leia mais

Staniel Cay to Cambridge Cay
6–9 de mar. 2024, North Atlantic Ocean ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F
We left Staniel Cay on Tuesday, March 5 after going to lunch at Staniel Cay Yacht Club and went to Pipe Cay, which was a short 2 hour motor. It was a beautiful area, looked to be private with a small resort and multiple beaches on one side and smaller “islands”/large rocks with vegetation on the other side. I did not get any pictures of that side as I was on the bow as we tried to find a good place to anchor. We decided it was too shallow and went around the islands/rocks to where it was deeper. We spent one night there and stayed on the boat. We are now in the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park.
We left Pipe Cay for Cambridge Cay the next day around 9:30 a.m .and pulled out the genoa at 10 a.m. Nice day for a sail, winds were from the southeast starting out at about 10 knots and picked up to 20 knots as we got further out in the bank. We were able to get a mooring ball at Cambridge Cay, which is first come, first serve. This was our second time on a mooring ball and we had much better success grabbing it with the boat hook than we did the first time! The tide, surge and winds were calmer for one, Kevin approached it at an angle and speed that allowed me to grab the rope close to the hook where I could bring it up to the boat. After securing the ball we lowered the dinghy and took the dogs to the beach. As we were getting back into the dinghy I felt something wrap around my foot and thought it was prickly seaweed. Then Kevin saw a small crab scurrying away, apparently I got a little to close for comfort and it let me know! Later that day as we were sitting in the cockpit we watched this large charter motor yacht (the Below Deck kind) making its way into the mooring field and motor between our boat and another boat very close. I commented that it was a whale of a boat. I forget the make of the boat but it began with a W so I named it Wally the Whale!
Thursday, March 7 - We began the day with snorkeling in an area we believe to be called the aquarium, but I’m convinced it was not the right area. Nevertheless we saw some colorful smaller fish and coral. In the afternoon we found a trail that took us to the other side of the island on the sound side where there is a massive boulder just offshore, it reminded me of a mini Gibraltar. We walked a good stretch of beach. The path was narrow and sandy, outlined with conch shells. The island was dense with trees growing fruit, palms and cacti. Dogs also got to run in the sand afterwards. The day was warm with low wind but cloudy, which was nice but my laundry didn’t dry 🤨Leia mais
