      Weekend in St Gallen

      12. Januar ⋅ ⛅ 32 °F

We arrived in Nuremberg, grabbed the rental car and made our way to St Gallen. Around the halfway point we stopped and had lunch in Ravensburg Germany. Once we arrived in Switzerland, we got showered and cleaned up for pizza and gifts with Dennis, Jelena and the grandkids. The next morning we met them along with Jelena and her son for the morning at an indoor water park. After the park we went to Jelena and Dalibor’s home for an hour. After getting ready for dinner we met everyone at a restaurant with traditional food. Klaus and I decided to stop for a drink in downtown St. Gallen at a bar we really like. We woke up Sunday, packed up the car and went to Dennis and Jelena’s to have breakfast and say our good byes. It was great seeing everyone and we miss them already. We drove from St Gallen to Nuremberg where we will be for the next 5 days.Weiterlesen

      St-Gaal et Rheinfal

Saint Gallen City / Abbey, SG

      10. Februar 2020 in der Schweiz ⋅ 🌬 6 °C

      Saint Gall

The compact metropolis of eastern Switzerland between Lake Constance and Appenzellerland has a charming, traffic-free old town. Colourfully-painted oriel windows are a town feature. The Abbey precinct with the cathedral and Abbey Library has been accorded UNESCO World Heritage listing.

St.Gallen’s most famous landmark is its Baroque cathedral with the Abbey Library, which houses some 170,000 documents – in part hand-written and over a thousand years old. The library probably also has Switzerland’s most beautiful Rococo hall. The entire Abbey precinct was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1983.

The name and foundation of the town stem from the Irish missionary monk Gallus who founded a hermitage here around 612. From 747, the then St.Gallen monastery was already following Benedictine Rule, which required the contemplative study of books and accordingly also stipulated the presence of a library. In the Middle Ages, the town developed into an important hub of culture and education in Europe. Later, the St.Gallen embroideries attracted international recognition and brought prosperity to the town.

St.Gallen is a university town with a focus on the economic sciences. The home town of the renowned «Mummenschanz» theatre group offers a varied cultural offering with theatres and museums. In summer, the romantic art-nouveau Dreilinden-Weiher open-air pool with its splendid views over the town attracts visitors to swim.

The excellent location in the four-country corner Switzerland, Germany, Austria and the Principality of Liechtenstein make St.Gallen the best starting point for excursions into the Appenzellerland with the Säntis, and to Lake Constance. Whether by rail or bicycle, the cycling and inline paradise of Lake Constance can be reached quickly along the Lake Constance Cycle Path. The combination of rail ‘n’ bike allows captivating tours to be undertaken which cross national borders. For walkers, the ‘Bridge Trail’ which passes over 18 bridges in the Sittertobel near St.Gallen is an experience: much about the design and construction of bridges is learnt en route. A six-hour section of the ‘Route of St. James’ leads from Rorschach to Herisau via St.Gallen.

The Voralpen-Express connects Lake Constance with Lucerne via St.Gallen in 2:45 hours. This 149-km-long transversal travelling across the foothills of the Alps is interesting from a technical rail viewpoint, but also impresses with stunning landscapes such as the Toggenburg, Lake Zurich, and hill moor of Rothenturm.

Located between Lake Constance and Appenzell with its famous library, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the traffic-free Old Town delights guests with brightly painted oriel windows, pretty boutiques and cosy cafés.

      Abbey of Saint Gall
In St. Gallen you'll find history at every turn. The city's landmark is the Convent of St. Gall with its Baroque cathedral. The convent, including the library and monastery archives, was added to the Unesco World Heritage List in 1983.

Even today, the spirit of the once active Benedictine monks is palpable when you enter the world famous Abbey Library, which also is called the Seelenapotheke (healing place of the soul).

The abbey precinct with its magnificent Baroque cathedral forms a unique historical ensemble. The Abbey Library - with Switzerland's most beautiful non-ecclesiastical Baroque hall - now contains 170,000 books. 50,000 of these are housed in the Baroque hall, where the 2,700 year old Egyptian mummy Shepenese is also to be found. The heart of the Abbey Library collection consists of 2,100 manuscripts of which some are on display at each of the current exhibitions. The entire abbey was declared a Unesco World Heritage site in 1983.

One striking feature of the old city is its many 16th to 18th century burgher houses with their splendid and often brightly painted bay windows. The city boasts a varied gastronomy with venues ranging from the traditional first-floor restaurants to the welcoming street cafes. Here you'll be tempted to linger and enjoy local and international specialities. The town is also an ideal starting point for hikes within the Appenzell and St. Gallen region.

Abbey of St. Gall and St. Gallen

      11. April 2022 in der Schweiz ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Sankt Gallen is a town in eastern Switzerland that grew up around the Abbey of St. Gall. St. Gall, formerly Gallus, was originally from Ireland. He was one of the companions of Columbanus on his 7th century mission. He is said to have left the mission to set up his hermitage here. The Abbey grew up around the hermitage, and the town grew up around the Abbey.
Most of these pictures are in and around the abbey. The 1st picture is the facade of the cathedral built on the location of the Abbey church looking across one of the exterior courtyards. The 2nd picture is the nave of the cathedral. The 3rd picture was a bit of a surprise. They call it the Corona Bible. It seems that during the pandemic, people took to copying sections of the scriptures. This text is a complications of lots of these comprising the entire Bible all in the original handwriting.
The next 3 pictures are taken around the abbey that is a large complex of buildings.
The 7th picture is in the abbey cellar which is a vaulted space. It has been set up as a museum of the history of the abbey. To the left is a model of the abbey church under construction.
The 8th picture is the famous library of St. Gall. This is one of the oldest monastic libraries in the world and was an important center of learning and collection of knowledge in the middle ages. And it is a stunningly beautiful place.
The last picture looks at a bit of the old town of St. Gallen.

      St. Gallen

      11. Juli 2017 in der Schweiz ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

We arrive at St. Gallen after driving across the Alps to check in at our first Air BnB. Toni chose well here with a comfortable apartment close to the centre of town and Toni's cousin Raphaella. We had dinner with Raphaella and her family with lots of conversation and planning a activities for the next couple of days. It was quite late by the time we got to bed after what had been a long day.

The next day, Martina, Raphaella's daughter had the day planned out for us. Together with her family we had brunch in the town centre and then a tour the town. St. Gallen is very picturesque place. The town while modern is at the same time very traditional architecturally and has one of the nicest cathedrals I have seen. From the town centre we visited the very taditional Swiss town of Appenzell. This is a quaint village with its own brewery and cheese factory. All set amongst rolling green hills, cows with tall grey mountains as a backdrop.

Later in the day we visited Lake Bodence to the north of St. Gallen, which forms the border between Switzerland and Germany. It has a very nicely developed forshore with parks and avenues of trees. The lake supports all kinds of water activities but was quite choppy when we were there.

The next place we visited was a parkland in the hills behind the city, providing a complete view of St. Gallen below it. The park is a forest setting with a series of 3 cascading lakes that have been set up for swimming, water polo and diving. This a a really good setup for all the locals to use.

Lastly we noticed what appeared to be many little huts amongst what looked like flower and vegetable gardens. This was correct. Most people live in apartments without land, so the council rents out tracts of land for any residents prepared to pay a small yearly fee to have access to grow their own fruit, vegetables. One of Carmelo's friends showed us around and allowed us to try some of his fresh veggies. It was amazing to see some of these little gardens.

Everywhere you looked there was a photo to be taken with every scene that could be a post card. A genuinely pretty place with a good balance between a modern town a traditional town and a country ambience.
