  • Next stop, Australia!

    1 mei 2016, Australië ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

Alright so the plane was delayed but after a short wait I boarded the plane and off we went. I began a conversation with Christopher the guy seated beside me. He was born and raised in south NZ but Melbourne had been his home for the better part of the last 12 years. Christopher had a pretty cool sense of style and after he told me he was a painter it kind of began to make sense. He that he was in NZ because his aunt was having some health issues. She ran a motor park in the south so he had been down there for the last six months helping run the business. At the end she even offered him the opportunity to buy it out. He seemed actually quite excited about the idea and the fact that the business came with a good chunk of ocean view property definitely didn't hurt the offer!

Once we arrived in Melbourne we said out goodbyes. I zoomed through customs and grabbed my stuff. As I walked through the doors there was Mel eagerly awaiting me. After a much needed long hug between old friends, we set out on our journey home. I would be staying with her in ocean Grove for the next few days which was about an hour south of Melbourne. We arrived back at her place and shortly after that I fell asleep.

    April 30, 2016

After a long sleep I felt completely recharged. I woke up to Honey (Mels dog) licking my hand. It was the greatest deja vu I've ever had. I miss having a dog so much so this time here with Mels dog will be glorious!

Mel and I got ready for the day and headed out to her Net ball game. For those back home it's kind of like ultimate Frisbee meets basketball. When we arrived I saw these two old guys who seemed to be long lost friends randomly meeting at their bocce ball court and it warmed my heart to hear their brief exchange. Before the the game began I saw this mother and child trying to throw water bottles at a tree trying to get their balls out of the stuck branches. I'm not sure why but I felt like being the hero so I climbed up into the tree and got one of them and then they threw me up a water bottle and I got the other one out with just two swift tosses. Totally felt like a hero haha.

It was a tough game for the team as they lost quite badly but still fun to learn a new game. After the game we went out for lunch and I tried my first official sausage roll which is apparently quite an Australian thing. Then we went down to Queens cliff marina and I saw a stingray swim in the water right below the dock and I almost crapped my pants. For those of you who don't know me, I'm so afraid of ocean wildlife. It's not even funny. Anyways then we went to Point Lonsdale which was beautiful and picturesque. Then we headed back to Mels place.

I spent a good chunk of the afternoom watching some AFL on TV and getting acquainted with the rules. I can't really explain the game but I think we're going to go to a game next weekend in Melbourne.

Later that evening we went to Jamie's house (a close friend of Mels). Jamie lives in Geelong which is about an hour from Ocean Grove. From there we took Jamie's Mercedes C63. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL CAR! We went for dinner in Geelong and I tried my first chicken Parmigiano (chicken parmi as the aussies say it). It was good but nothing spectacular.

After that we met up with Jake and Catie a few more of their friends. We had quite a few drinks at a few different venues. Some of the drinks were just horrible though. This one martini type drink was blue and looked great but legitimately tasted like shaving cream. There was another Bright green drink that was the spiciest thing I have ever tasted. It was so gross. They even got a peanut butter and jelly drink which really wasn't very good either. On the better side of things I tried my first cosmo and my first old fashioned and Australian beer is pretty good also. Also liquor 43 is pretty delicious with coke.

Then as you do, Jamie, Mel and I went to Macdonalds for some late night snacking. It also started storming pretty bad so we went down to the oceanside and watched the storm for a little while. Obviously because Mel and I were drinking we just stayed the night in Geelong at Jamie's who pretty much lives in a big auto garage. It was quite an experience, but hey the couch was super comfy.

    May 1

The next day Mel had to work so she left early but I stayed at Jamie's. We eventually went for Sunday brunch at Pako Pantry. I had the best french toast I've ever eaten there! The rest of the day was pretty chill. I did some planning for my time here in Australia and then Jamie and I also watched a few Netflix documentaries.

For supper Jamie, Mel, and I went back to Ocean Grove and Mels mom made us a nice pasta bake dinner with garlic bread which I inhaled! And that was pretty much the night. Pretty lazy day but much needed. Kinda got things planned out. I think I'll be staying in Ocean Grove and Melbourne for the next week or so! I'll keep you posted!

  • Great Ocean Road!

    2 mei 2016, Australië ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Today was a super amazing day!

So last night we stayed at Jakes house because there was more space there and I actually had my own private room which was really nice. We woke up and headed back to Mels mom's so I could pick up all my clothes and have a shower before we set out on our adventure!

After having a quick lunch, Mel, Jamie and I headed out on our great ocean road adventure! We took Jamie's car which was the 2008 Mercedes C63 which was an amazing car to drive through such an amazing, curvy road. I ended up taking lots of videos throughout the day which I can't upload to the blog but take my word for it, the views were stunning!

We also drove by this golf course type area where we saw a big gang of kangaroos or roos as the aussies call them. Next stop was Erskine falls which was a very short hike to these beautiful tiered waterfall area. Naturally we didn't obey the signs and walked right up to the bottom of the falls 😊

My favourite place we visited was Aireys Inlet. It was like a secret area of Mels where almost nobody else went. There were cool little coves that you could climb between and then watch the ocean waves come crashing onto the shore. Mel and I spent about half hour here while Jamie rested in the car. I ended up getting quite drenched from the waves being stronger than I anticipated, but it was well worth it! 😊

Afterwards we headed back to Geelong for dinner. Jamie and I were supposed to go to Mel's basketball game but when we showed up they were short players so there was no game. Instead Jamie and I kinda just spent about an hour playing our own games of horse. I was so rusty, but I slowly found a rhythm... sort of. It was a lot of fun to play basketball with friends again. After that we pretty much just called it an early night. Tomorrow will be lazy ish I think. Goodnight everyone!

  • Geelong Lazy Days

    4 mei 2016, Australië ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Alright so not much to report for these two days. Tuesday May 3rd I went out around noon to the waterfront. The weather was crazy with really strong winds. It was nice watching the storm brew on the sea from the cafe only meters from the waterfront. I had four chicken sliders which turned out to be much larger than I thought they would be. I was stuffed.

After working up the courage I set out to tackle the water front and the weather. I didn't last long but I did get to take some funny pictures with the bollards. The bollards are these weird sculptures the Australians place all over the beach. They're pretty weird in my opinion but they made for some great selfies haha.

After I went to the mall and I felt like I was back in Saskatoon. It's been a while since I've been to the mall. After a short stay Jamie came and picked me up and I relaxed for the afternoon watching a new series called vikings which I highly recommend.

In the evening we went out for chicken wings and then had a movie night at Jamie's. We watched sweet home Alabama which was pretty sub par before calling it a night. I also bought 4 packs of Tim Tams and ate so many!

    Wednesday May 4

I was supposed to go to the zoo today but I didn't feel well so I stayed in. I had Mexican food with Jamie, but most of the day was spent on the couch watching Vikings. By about 6 ish Mel came and picked me up and we headed back to Ocean Grove. We relaxed at Mel's mom's house for the evening.

Tomorrow I'll go into Melbourne and see what I can find there! Goodnight!

  • Melbourne!

    5 mei 2016, Australië ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

Alright so I decided to spend a few days in the city!

Today after getting a ride to Werribee with Mel, I said my goodbyes and took a train into the city. My hostel was luckily very close to the train station so I dumped my bags there. I didn't venture very far but I was able to check out federation square which was really cool. After that I sat by the waterside and people watched for a while. I also got through about a chapter of my book thinking fast and slow. The book is really interesting and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a better understanding of how our brains work! On the way back to the hostel I found this art alleyway which was really neat. My favourites are in the photos!

Later I went back to the hostel and had a nap. Around 6 I went out for drinks with an old friend I made in Europe named Michael. He and I exchanged what was left of our European adventures, and what we had been up to in the meantime. He took me to this super cool bar/restaurant called state of grace. To get to the bar from the restaurant you literally have to pull a red book from the shelf and the whole adjacent bookshelf slides into the wall leading downstairs to the bar! So freaking cool!

    More to come tomorrow!

  • Melbourne Done Right!

    6 mei 2016, Australië ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Spoiler alert : This is going to be a long post!

Alright so given my change of plans here I only really had today to do rhe whole city of Melbourne. This proved to be a task and a half but I think I did a pretty great job of covering a good chunk!

I started the day with a 1030 walking tour of the city. I quickly made friends with an English man from Yorks hire. As we chatted it became clear we were quite similar in many ways. Neither of us were huge alcohol drinkers, or coffee for that matter. We were both rather business oriented and enjoyed psychology and the way our minds work. I ended up spending almost the whole day with him.

The tour was pretty good. The tour guide definitely seemed to know his stuff. He taught me about hook turns which is in Canada would be the equivalent of having to go into the far right lane and then making a left turn around the tram and the rest of traffic. It's pretty weird and it's apparently unique to Melbourne.

We took a walk through the old melbourne jail. Apparently there was this Robin Hood type character back in the day named Ned Kelly who was for lack of better words a "shit disturber." He caused a lot of trouble for the police but often found a way to turn his bad deeds into favourable deeds for the general public 😊 Seemed like quite an interesting historical character.

On the tour at one point there was this busker on the street and an old asian man (probably in his sixties) who was watching him. At one point the busker said something like "show me whatcha got" and without missing a beat the man stood up and lifting one leg in the air while clapping underneath the lifted leg. The old man's smiled as if to say something like "Yeah I still got it!" This event totally made my day.

Once again we found some cool street art in a few alleys and again I have a picture of my favourites 😊

The tour ended around one and Harry wasn't too busy so we stuck together for the afternoon. I learned that he was travelling with his girlfriend who was currently at work and how he had already done China and Thailand before coming here. He and his gf had worked a few weeks to make some money before buying a van. This weekend they were heading out on their new adventure of seeing Australia in their van. Sounded like a hell of a good time!

After the tour I showed him state of grace and the magical bookshelf from the night before. He was so taken back, I was glad to not be the only one. The bar was actually closed to we left quickly after that.

Next we went to ANZ tower to try and have a drink on top of the city. Unfortunately by the time we got there we learned that the bar didn't open until five. Insistent, we rode the elevator to one of the top floors anyways. We got out and there were glass doors on either side with two different companies working on the 40th floor. We couldn't go inside but the view was still quite amazing (and free!).

I was pretty keen to see Victoria market so we headed there next. There was all kinds of cool stuff but I got hungry so we decided to find somewhere to eat. We found this place called Fancy Hanks BBQ Joint. Unfortunately they were all out of ribs so I settled for wings and he had a brisket sandwich. Both were incredible and we were beyond impressed! Afterwards we got these nice dessert squares from the market and he agreed that dessert was better than beer (which not many people would agree to).

Our last stop together was the library. It was massive and had all kind of free exhibits but the one were interested in was Ned Kellys. There was an exhibit of the suit of bullet proof armor he had created for him and his gang. Given how old it was, it was beyond impressive. Unfortunately for those who know his story, he was still hanged to death at a young age after he was convicted of his crimes.

After the library Harry and I went separate ways. It was really nice to have a day out with a new face with such similar interests. Hopefully Harry will come to Canada sometime so I can show him around (even if I have to meet him outside of Saskatchewan haha).

I had one more activity left for the day and since it was still beautiful weather I decided to follow through. I headed back down to the hostel to regroup before setting out to St Kilda Pier.

The tram ride was about half an hour. On the way, there was this adorable little boy like maybe three or four with his mother and grandmother riding the tram. He had the most amazing smile and energy to him. I loved it. At one point he made eye contact with me and he was like "hello!" And he kept waving and smiling at me and I could tell I had my truest smile shining through at him. I was so sincerely happy to share that moment with him.

Once I arrived at St Kilda pier it was about dusk. The sun had already began to the sink into the horizon. As I walked down the pier there was a very serene feel to the night. Although there were plenty of people on the pier it felt quite and relaxed. At the end of the pier is a rock formation and in the formation guess what hides inside at dusk and at night? Yes, you guessed right.... PENGUINS!!! So yeah got to see all these cool little guys hanging out in the rocks just chilling having a good time.

After I saw the Penguins I went onto this little rock formation type thing that stretched into the waterfront. I went to the very end and then parked myself there for a little while. The crashing of the waves on the rocks and the melbourne skyline combined with all the boats in the harbour in my vision was such a sweet harmony of senses.

After I got back to the city centre. I was taken back by one busker. He was playing Ed Sheeran who I'm a very big fan of. I sat and listened to him for probably five or six songs. He had really cool style. He had a tattoo of pikachu dressed as link which was so cool. He also had two different boots on which was unique.

Then I continued down the street where I legit found a guy in a full horse costume playing bass. He was so funny and so into it. I'm sure he was pretty baked but you obviously couldn't be certain because of his costume.

Finally I found a busker named Josh Romig. He was absolutely phenomenal. Probably the best busker I've ever sat and watched. He did artists like Ray Charles, to Drake, to Ed Sheeran, to the Beetles. He had such an incredible range. I even got a photo with him after his set.

Luckily there was a cheap little restaurant right where he was playing so I ordered a meal and watched from the patio. So I ordered a lamb shank and enjoyed the music. I started a small conversation with the older couple sitting next to me and within like two minutes the man offered to buy me a beer so obviously I accepted. They were retired business owners just having a nice night out. For an older couple they certainly still looked very in love and that made my heart smile 😊

And that was my day! Best day in Australia so far!

  • Hit the Ground Running in Sydney!

    8 mei 2016, Australië ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

So after I got back to my room last night I met a few new faces. Scott was from Calgary and Ivan was from Italy. Later Owen and Katie from Ireland joined us and we spoke of travels and Ed Sheeran haha. Speaking with the Irish couple definitely made me miss Ireland and remember how much I loved the accents and the people. Also Scott told me I MUST go to fraiser island while I am in Australia so i looked it up and I think he's right. I'll book everything tomorrow!

Anyways I caught my flight with zero problems. Only about an hour flight before arriving in Sydney! Upon arrival I got my bags and jumped in the shuttle to my hostel (which was pretty convenient!).

By 2pm I had checked into my hostel and met up with my friend Reece. Him and I had met back in Dresden and had traveled together for nearly a week before I had to go home. Anyways we set out on a small walk before heading to the SCG (Sydney cricket grounds) for my very first Australian football game! Reece even gifted me a Sydney Swans jersey to wear to the game and take back to Canada with me!

The game was pretty tight in the first quarter but by halftime sydney had a decent lead and by the end of the game Sydney ended up winning 135-54. Franklin and Heeney were the all stars with a total of something like 68 points between the two of the alone! Needless to say I did quite enjoy learning the game and am officially a sydney swans fan! 😊

After we caught the bus back into the circular quay and did a small tour. I got to see the harbor bridge and the opera house under all the lights and they were both stunning and beautiful in their own way.

We decided to spend the evening in a german pub called Munich Brauhaus for sentimental reasons (because I never made it to Munich which would have been our last stop together!). From what I could tell it was a very authentic pub right from the look of the pub to the steins to the outfits the bartenders were wearing. There was even a german band playing and singing on stage along with occasional yoddles!

When we finished up at the pub we started our trek back to the hostel. On the way we bought some street Kebabs, again for sentimental sake. And that was pretty much our night. Hopefully I'll catch him once more before I leave Sydney!

    Sunday May 8, 2016

Today was pretty much a write off. I left the hostel around noon to get some groceries and after that I stayed in all day. The weather wasn't bad but it also wasn't great so I decided to spend the day planning out my remaining time away from home. I booked hostels for the next two weeks and almost all my transportation as well! Overall it was a very successful day but I still have a few loose ends to tie up.

I had dinner in the hostels basement bar. It was a beef roast with roast potatoes and yorkshire pudding. It was really delicious and surprisingly cheap! There I met Aaron who was from England and we played a few games of pool before retreating to our rooms. I still had a bit more planning so I went back to the lobby to use the computers where I met Sarah from Newcastle. We has good chats about our journeys and ultimately had a nice silver needle white tea which is supposed to be really good for you!

Anyways that's it for the past few days! Two more days in Sydney and then I'm off again! Take care out there!

  • Walking Tour and Backster's Inn

    9 mei 2016, Australië ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

Another rainy ish day in Sydney. I woke up around 930 and got ready for the day before calling mom for mothers day. We had a really good chat but because of it I missed the walking tour that was run by the hostel (little did I know this would work in my favour).

So after my chat with mom, I made myself some lunch and finished planning my trip. Aside from two bus rides the rest of my trip is essentially booked at this point and I must say it's an amazing feeling to not have to plan much anymore!

I decided to take the 2:30 walking tour in the city despite the rain. By the time I got to the tour the rain stopped and I found myself actually quite warm which was nice. Before the tour even started I met Marin Poirier-Coutansais (that's a great guess, and indeed you're right, he was French!) He was from Les sables d'olonne, but studied in Nantes. He explained how his home town. Is where the Vandee Globe sailing competition starts every four years which was really cool.

The tour was alright. The guide was very knowledgeable, but I found that he was almost always underwhelmed when speaking about historical things. In fact he always just discredited almost everything he would say. He would say something like: "and that commemoration is where the British first planted their flags here, but how can we really prove that so it probably isn't really the spot. If I didn't have Marin with me, I might have just left the tour, but I'm glad I didn't. We ended up visiting Hyde park, and Sydney Tower otherwise known as the golden bucket. I learned how sydney was initially where the British would ship off ex convicts so it wasn't exactly a law abiding town way back when.

But at the end of the tour we witnessed the most beautiful sunset. Even for Mr land of the living skies from Saskatchewan it was still quite a treat. And the tour finished in a spot that showcased the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. The view and the sunset together definitely made my day, especially given that it all started in the rain.

When the tour finished Marin proposed a drink and I happily agreed. The tour guide made a few recommendations so we chose one of them. The place was called Backsters Inn. Everything about the bar was cool. First off, it was off the main streets. You had to walk down an alley and then there was a little terrace and it was tucked in the corner. Just a small door not even marked. Then you open the door and go down a flight of stairs before opening another door and then BOOM! You're there. It feels like you're in a different universe. It was so classy (even though we weren't dressed fancy at all).

We had a few drinks and chatted for a few hours. I ordered a wheat ale first which was really nice. I saw the bartenders making all kinds of cool cocktails and eventually I saw this bartender use a juicer for one of the drinks so I asked what it was. It was a whisky sour, one ounce whisky and the rest was composed of two granny smith apples juiced right before my eyes. It was super cool and very tasty. Not to mention I felt like in some weird way it felt like I was being healthy (this would be a very dangerous path I think...). I also met a bartender named TK from the Bag of Islands in NZ which was really cool cause I was just there and he seemed impressed that I knew where that was!

After a few drinks we came back to my hostel and ordered some food from the bar. We had really nice thin crust pizzas and a few more good chats before Marin and I said our goodbyes. It was truly a pleasure to meet him and he made me realize how much reading this new book has helped me with conversation. Reading as a whole opens such conversational doors that I never truly saw before. So yeah, I'm going to start reading more, permanently.

Before heading to bed I planned my day for tomorrow. It's going to be a busy one! Tune in tomorrow! Goodnight everyone!

  • Bridge Walk, Tapas, and Manley

    10 mei 2016, Australië ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

Another really busy last day this time in Sydney! I started the day with the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb. The climb was advertised as the "climb of your life" but to be honest I felt it was quite underwhelming. The view was quite nice but we weren't allowed to take cameras and photos were really expensive so I opted out. But on the plus side I got a complimentary hat and group photo. If you're ever considering doing the climb, don't spend the $278 like I did... just find somewhere else for a nice view!

The day got significantly better from there. When I got out of the bridge climb Reece was eagerly waiting and we went out searching for some lunch. Reece wanted to try this tapas bar, so we went there. We tried a total of four dishes: lobster sliders, braised pork in lettuce wrap, stuffed red peppers, and some sort of braised chicken in a cheese and tomato salsa sauce. The chicken was our favourite. We also had a sangria each which was made up of wine, gin, tequila, liquor 43, amaretto and some assorted fruit. I had never actually had a sangria and I feel like I was spoiled by this one because it was delicious.

After we finished there we headed to the opera house but unfortunately we weren't allowed access inside. It was still cool to be able to see the different sails and the things inside them (because almost all the walls are glass). From there we got ice cream. We both chose a combination of coconut and this rich milk chocolate flavor. I think the lady at the counter liked Reece because his was almost twice the size of mine haha. From there we decided to walk to Darling Harbour which was quite nice and quaint. Then we walked back and I had to catch the ferry to Manly (a suburb in Sydney) so we said our goodbyes and until next times!

The ferry was nice and once again I got to see the sunset with the bridge in the background which was stunning. When I got to Manly I met up with Becca (a British girl I had met in Wanaka NZ). We started by taking a nice walk down Manly beach which was beautiful and the loud crash of the waves in the background was music to my ears. Then we went for dinner and we both decided to try kangaroo steak. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. On that note I can't say it really tastes any different than a regular beef steak, just a bit more gamey.

We both wanted dessert so we went to the grocery store and both got a cake each and a litre of milk to share. The cakes were massive and in hind sight we should have shared one but it was a funny experience none the less. We then sat in front of Manly beach enjoying our cake. It was really quite hilarious to see all the joggers going by trying to take care of their bodies and here we were, stuffing our faces with cake.

On the way back to the wharf we has to stop and use the bathrooms. They ended up being downstairs in a sketchy underground parking lot. On the elevator back up, the elevator shook violently twice in a row before opening. Once it did open we jumped out as fast as we could. Then we said our goodbyes and I caught the ferry back. On my way home I saw a homeless man tucked away fast asleep and decided to leave the rest of my cake for him to enjoy when he woke up. I sure hope he likes it!

Anyways, that was my day! Tomorrow I'm off to Byron Bay!

  • Off to Byron Bay!

    11 mei 2016, Australië ⋅ 🌙 8 °C

Not too much to report today. I flew out pretty early in the morning. It was a brief flight and then I had to catch a bus into Byron Bay.

It's quite a small town which I like, but more of a hippy town than the towns in new zealand (maybe? at this point my memory could be skewed). Anyways I checked in and then had a nap. Eventually I woke up and decided to get out for a little bit.

I found a kebab place and enduldged before heading to the beach. I have to admit Australian beaches are something else! So beautiful. The waves were not massive, but at times still sizable. I had shorts on but they weren't swim trunks. For a while I just stayed in knee deep, but eventually I couldn't resist. I found a few English girls sunbathing and asked them if they would be around for a while and if they could watch my stuff. Obviously they fell for the Terrence charm (yeah right) and happily obliged.

I ran in full speed and dove into the water. It was cold, but more than bearable and it felt amazing. I spent the next half hour or so diving in and out of the waves and allowing myself to be one with the ocean (while still occasionally and unnecessarily keeping an eye out for sharks haha). When I was finished I collected my things and headed back.

I had a few hours to myself so I sat on my phone and then read a few chapters of my book. After a while a few of my room mates came by and introduced themselves. Two were from England and two from Germany, but the german girls left Pretty quick.

After talking with the English girls we ended up going to a bar for a few drinks. I passed on the drinking, but I had a decent little supper. The bar was very much an open concept with no real doors, but some parts of the bar was more sheltered than others. In the open area they had a projection screen and they played the movie "the blues brothers." I had never seen it, but I absolutely loved the soundtrack and I found it pretty funny. It was a cool experience to catch a movie in a bar and there were quite a few people there!

That was the end of the night! Going surfing tomorrow!

  • Phenomenal Surfing in Byron Bay!

    13 mei 2016, Australië ⋅ 🌙 12 °C

    Thursday May 12

Wow what a cool day here in Byron Bay! I slept in until ten and slowly got started on my day! Had a small breakfast and then made penne with cheap sauce for lunch before setting out for my surf lesson! I forgot to mention but last night I also met a Belgian guy from Antwerp named Stefaan. He told me he was going to take a surfing lesson at black dog surf school today so I decided I would join him and luckily for me there was an empty spot.

So we went to the surf place which was right around the corner for 145. After a brief introduction we set out to the beach in the van. We spent a good chunk of time going through safety and technique and also just stretching which was all very helpful. I technically did try surfing two years ago on Vancouver island, but it really didn't go very well.

After much instruction we hit the water. I volunteered to go first, but I rushed my attempt at standing up and fell almost immediately. After I got some feedback from the instructor my second attempt was great and I stood right up! It felt so amazing! From there it just got better and better 😊

It's hard to explain it all, today was just phenomenal! And we got some epic photos!

After surfing Stefaan and I decided we would give it another go tomorrow as well 😊 We went back to the hostel and ordered pizza for only $6. It was domino's and I was starving so I ate my entire pizza. Then we went and got some cookies and beer and I ate my whole pack of cookies and a beer too. The surfing really built up my appetite.

Around ten we winded down for the evening, but I wasn't quite tired enough to go to sleep so I took a walk to the beach. The waves were crashing really hard and I'm pretty sure it was high tide because there wasn't too much of a beach left. I walked down the beach a fair bit until it was pretty much entirely dark. The stars were beautiful and the night was so clear. Truth be told I was so scared because it's Australia and there are so many things that are dangerous so when I heard this loud bird noise I just ran back to the edge of the beach with light. I'm certain there was nothing that would put me into immediate danger, but I wasn't going to chance anything.

After that I went back to the hostel and fell asleep almost instantly.

    Friday May 13

I slept in pretty late today until almost eleven. Had a pretty relaxed morning. Around two Stefaan and I headed out surfing again!

This time there wasn't as much of a lesson so we got a lot more time in the water. The day before Dom the instructor was giving us pushes and kinda finding the waves for us but today we were all on our own, paddling and all. This proved to be a lot more difficult but after about an hour of learning the waves and a better paddling technique it became a lot more fluent. I had a few waves that I rode probably at least 50 meters and it felt incredible! On one of the waves, without even planning it, Stefaan, myself and the instructor were all simultaneously on the wave! It was so cool! Also there was this little five year old with his dad who was surfing and getting pushes and he was killing it! He literally high fived stationary Dom as he was surfing the wave. Such an adorable sight!

When we finished up Stefaan and I got our photos from the day before which look awesome! When we got back to the hostel I met Kyle who was my new Canadian roommate. Stefaan had met a Dutch couple and the five of us all went out for a cheap meal at the local bar cheeky monkeys. They had a deal for anyone in a hostel which was 50% off any food order a complimentary small beer. So for 7.50 I had a burger and fries with a beer. What's even more crazy is happy hour was on so I had a pint for $4. Yeah it doesn't stop there. So it's Friday and they have this body paint theme night going on so there are legitimately topless waitresses walking around with body paint "covering" their boobs. One came to our table and offered to buy us all a round of drinks. So for 11.50 I had a burger and fries with 2 pints and a small beer. Pretty crazy!

But as the night went on the place turned more into a club and anyone who really knows me knows that I don't much enjoy clubs. There were drunk people everywhere and apparently the great thing about this bar is that they encourage you to dance on tables. So yeah by about ten I left because I wasn't really having too much fun at that point.

When I got back the English girls were I'm the room relaxing. Had some fun chars with them about making necklaces out of tv remote buttons, which I thought was the weirdest thing, but still so funny. Just imagine going to value village and buying like six broken tv remotes and the look youwould get at the counter haha.

And that was my time in Byron! Tomorrow I'm off to Noosa for a few days! Nighty night!
