  • Arrived In Lisbon!

    17 de marzo de 2024, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Arrived in Lisbon at 8:30 am local time. I took a bus from the airport to the end of ir's line, and then walked the rest of the way to the water front area. I took in some of the sites, waiting for the 2:00 checkin time at my hostel. I also found the Se Cathederal which is the starting point of the camino, and obtained my pilgrim's credencial and first stamp there. Time for a quick shower and a nap!Leer más

  • Along The Riverfront To Sacavem.

    18 de marzo de 2024, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

I left the steps of the cathederal at 7:30 this morning, and took my first steps. At first I walked thru some industrial areas, but then turned into a lovely riverside walk. I had to go on and off the path due to some areas that were closed off due to construction. To Sacavem is only 12.5 km today, but was probably more like 15 because of the detours. This will make the next days walk to Vila Franca de Xira 22.8 km's more bearable. Otherwise having to do 36 km the first day would have been too much. I am at a very nice hostel in Sacavem for the night. Have a look at todays pic's!Leer más

  • Nice and Slow!

    19 de marzo de 2024, Portugal ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

Left Sacavem at 6:30, because I knew I had a big day. Yesterday was a warmup of 12.5kms, and today would be double. The heat has been rising every day. I thought march would be cooler. I had not seen another soul all day, until the last 2 kms of the day. Met a man named Paul from England. He was passing me going about 2 times faster. When he saw that I had a backpack, we chatted and ended up at the same hostel. He walked in one day what I had done in 2! Turns out he is a postman back in England. Anyway made it to Vila Franca do Xira tonight. Here are some pics from today.Leer más

  • On The Road Again.

    20 de marzo de 2024, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Was a day of lots of road walking. My feet really feel it tonight. A really nice albergue here in Azambuja was a welcoming respite. Walking along the highway, it says to always walk on the left side as back home. On a bridge, there was an arrow on the other side of the road pointing down a set of stairs, so I crossed over the to the other side. I went down the stairs as indicated, where there was another arrow pointing down a tunnel under the bridge back to the side I was on. Then another arrow pointing up a set of stairs to the landing that I was originally on. I thought boy, I could be here awhile. Just a few pic's today.Leer más

  • Short recovery day.

    21 de marzo de 2024, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

After yesterdays marathon of pavement walking, I had a choice of doing a 12 km stage or a 32. I decided to have an easy day and just do the 12. Tomorrow 20 to Santarem! I also knew that there would be a nice albergue here in Valada tonight. I walked most of the day with Eli and his daughter from San Diego USA. They had reservations in Santarem tonight so the had to press on. They will be there for 2 days tho, so most likely see them again. A few pics from today!Leer más

  • Santarem!

    22 de marzo de 2024, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

A relatively straight forward walk along mostly farm track to Santarem. One section of 13.5 kms had no water or eats. Was great up to the big hill into Santarem. It was Ulia's birthday today! She is from Germany, and just retired.Leer más

  • Azinhaga

    23 de marzo de 2024, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Good country walk from Santarem today. Made it to Azinhaga. Just a few pics due to some lost pics!

  • A Haunted Village!

    24 de marzo de 2024, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Quinta Da Cardiga is a completely abandoned town. Has a very creepy feel to it. Ideal location for a horror movie. While walking today, we came across many free lemons alng the trail. They were great for cutting up and putting into our water bottles. Tonight in Atalaia. Tomorrow Tomar! Have a look at the pics.Leer más

  • Highway Forest Repeat

    25 de marzo de 2024, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Had a long 32 km day. Made it to Calvinos, just past Tomar. The day was a mix of beautifull forest, and road walking. This camino has waaaay to much road walking. Best thing today, was picking an orange right off the tree, cutting and eating it. Best orange ever. Here are some picsLeer más

  • First Rainy Day

    26 de marzo de 2024, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Left the albergue in Calvinos this morning after a light breakfast of a cup of coffee a banana and some juice that I had bought last night. It was a beautiful albergue, but only 2 of us there. There was no place to eat in town, so we had to go ask the store lady to open up her minimercado for us. We made a pot of knorr swiss soup, had some meat and cheese. Also a few oranges that I had picked. Today was only a 21 km day, and finished in Alvaiazere. The weather today was rain on and off. No sooner than I put my raincoat on and the sun would come, and vice versa all day. This albergue is known for it's elaborate wax stamp that you get in your credential. (See pics)Leer más

  • More Rain!

    27 de marzo de 2024, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

The rain was on and off again today, along with some very high winds. In the ucalyptus tree forest, many were cracking in the wind. I thought for sure that some would come down. I made it to a very nice alberge here in Alvorge. The trails were very nice today, but few towns to get anything to eat. I would like to shine the light on the sweet old lady in the minimercado this morning, who insisted on buying my morning pastry for this dishevelled looking pilgrim. Here are some pics.Leer más

  • Rain, Rain

    28 de marzo de 2024, Portugal ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

It was a rainy 22 km's again today. When I arrived at Conimbriga, most of my stuff was very damp. At the hostel tonight, many of the people that I have met on and off were all at the same place tinight. Skyler from the USA, the girl from germany, Karen from Holland, and Alex from the Ukraine are all here. Since everybody had wet stuff, Alex found a drycleaners near us. We all put our stuff together and took it there. They washed everything and dryed it for 8.00 euro! So we all will have dry socks for the morning! Skyler was set on getting an american style burger from a restaurant that he had heard about. We all went and had burgers. So everything clean and dry tonight in this cozy albergue. Tomorrow Coimbra!Leer más

  • COIMBRA

    29 de marzo de 2024, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

It was a fairly quick walk into Coimbra today. The only excitement today was when I seen Karen from Holland walking towards me going the wrong way. I asked what was up? She was nervous because there was a pack of dogs on the trail and she wasn't sure what to do. Luckily I had my whistle with me. As I got up to the dogs I blew the shrill whistle and they all scatterred. Worked like a charm. We walked on without any problems. I am taking a rest day in Coimbra before moving on. Just a few pics from today.Leer más

  • Coimbra Rest Day

    30 de marzo de 2024, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

It was nice to sleep in a bit today. It was going to be a no walking day, but I did walk 4 km to the decathalon store and back. The rest of the day was just wondering around Coimbra. A few of us ended the day by going to a Fado show. A short video is attached. Tomorrow 25 km.Leer más

  • Happy Easter

    31 de marzo de 2024, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

It was an uneventfull walk to Mealhada today. I met Jorge and his wife Charo from Argentina on the path tho. Jorge has done 9 caminos, and his wife 6! Lots of people in the albergue tonight.

  • 25 km's to Agueda!

    1 de abril de 2024, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

It was a hard walk today due to most cafe bars being closed, and the amount of road walking required. Yesterday most people were at mass, then seemed to spend the day at home. Today was another holiday, where everyone seemed to be travelling to a big family celibration. There was a band going door to door, I guess telling each household that it was time to celibrate. Walking thru one town, a bunch of people were arriving at this one house for a big celibration. They were all dressed up. As I was walking by, the father came out and wanted me to stay for beers, wine, food etc...! I still had 12 km's to go to get to my albergue target, and it was already getting late. So I gratefully declined knowing that after so.e dri ks, wine, food, etc... that I would never be able to get there. Anyway I am at a very nice albergue tonight.Leer más

  • I Yam What I Yam!

    2 de abril de 2024, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

It was a rainy and muddy walk thru
the endless eucalyptus forest today, but I did find this great pic of Popeye! I Yam what I Yam, a pilgrim. After being drenched on the 26 km walk, I arrived here at a very nice donativo albergue run by a fellow pilgrim named Paul. He cooked a very good dinner for us all, and told us alot about Portugal. Only 20 km's for tomorrow.Leer más

  • A Sunny Day!

    3 de abril de 2024, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

I had to take it easy today, and only did 18 km's to Sao Joao da Madiera. The albergue here is very different. It is in a room in a wing of a hospital! I hope it is not an insane asylum, or I might not get out! It is called Santa Casa da Misericordia. Google it and somebody let me know. In 2 more days I will be in Porto. Just a straight forward sunny walk today. Have a look at the pics.Leer más

  • Gijo

    4 de abril de 2024, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

It was an uneventfull walk to Gijo today. It was only 19 km's, and only 16 km's for tomorrow to get to Porto. Doing 35 all at once looked like too much. Especially since it was mostly road walking. It seemed like every house that I went by today had barking dogs. (See video) Most of them looked like that's all they have done there whole life. Tonight there are just 2 of is. A guy from Uruguay, and I. We went to get something to eat at a place recommended by the hospitalero, and it was excellent. Anyway, Porto tomorrow and the start of what is said to be the best part of this camino.Leer más

  • Porto!

    5 de abril de 2024, Portugal ⋅ 🌬 24 °C

Arrived in Porto after a long hot walk today. The first part of the day was thru a thick forested area that had many forked trails, with poor markings. The wise pilgrim app's gps came in real handy! Walking thru Porto to the far side where my albergue is, was long and tedious. A lot of construction going on everywhere. The city feels rather gritty, so I will be glad to be getting out into the country again tomorrow where I will be staying at an albergue in a monastery! Anyway time to eat, sleep, and get ready for tomorrow.Leer más

  • To the monastery!

    6 de abril de 2024, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

It was a straight 15 km ealk out of Porto. A virtual straight line of boredom. At the end, I reached the Zona Industrial. Yes just as lovely as it sounds. The last 8 km's, were a bit nicer thru some small towns. I was anxious to get to the monesteiro de vairao in Vairao turned albergue, becuase I heard so many good things about it. The volunteer hospitalerio is very nice. Maria another volunteer, took all my clothes and washed and dried them in a machine for me! Beds are a little short tho. My feet are sticking thru openings in the foot board as I write. Anyway some pics from todayLeer más

  • Scenery Getting Nicer!

    7 de abril de 2024, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

I left the monastery at 8:00 this morning, but first took some pics of the elaborate cemetery there. (See pics) It was then a reasonable 20 km to my destination of Pedra Furada. It is a nice newer albergue, with great showers and a washer and dryer! The only thing, is that to get something to eat we had to walk 1.1 km's to a restaurante and back. The scenery is getting nicer, as we go further north. Also we broke through the 200km marker todau, being only 196 km from Santiago. Anyway here are todays pics.Leer más

  • Casa Da Fernanda

    8 de abril de 2024, Portugal ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

Weather wise, the day was up and down. If I put on my poncho the sun would come out. If I put it away, the rain would pour. A japanese lady named Takei and myself, walked a long day of 29 km's, to make sure that we would stay at Casa Fernada tonight. One of the best albergues on the camino. Look it up on youtube. I have a great bed on an outdoor porch, overlooking the garden. Dinner for us 15 pilgrims was outstanding. Then they brought out the port and the guitar. What a night. I have to sign off before I pass out. Check out the pics and video!Leer más

  • Beautiful Ponte de Lima

    9 de abril de 2024, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

At Casa Fernanda this morning, we had a huge breakfast table presented to us. All the coffee and eats got us of to a good, albeit late start. That was OK tho, since only had 15 km's to do in order to get to Ponte de Lima. The walk was all sunny today, with small villages along the way. This evening I walked around the town with Takei from Japan, and another girl from Puerto Rico. Takei has to leave shortly, because she is volunteering as a hospitalerio on the Frances. Any here are some pics.Leer más
