About to board our third flight (to Reykjavik) even though we are 36 hrs and three flights into the trip, having left from Kendall Australia 8.30am Friday 4th.
We are super tired (I’m possibly tired and cranky) 🧙. Ready for a soft bed and a comfy feather Doona.Read more

  • Reykjavik; Center Hotel Arnarhvoll

    Oct 5–7, 2024 in Iceland ⋅ 🌙 3 °C

We made it to Iceland! After 40 hours travel; 1 car, 1 train 4 planes, 1 rental car , 3 small sleeps and countless airline meals, we arrived in Reykjavik.
We napped for about an hour and then on to drinks, dinner and more drinks. The hotel has a fabulous bar on the top floor and hot spa in the basement. The Main Street is full of restaurants and bars and the scene is very lively.

The local girls were out in skimpy dresses (1 degree) and we were surprised to see an ice cream-bar that was full! It seems ice-cream is a ‘thing’ here. Most of the bar patrons were noisy locals, they love to party.

It was a great night with the promise of a fabulous day tomorrow.

  • Day 2 Iceland Reykjavik

    October 6, 2024 in Iceland ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

Today we walked to the harbour and did a tour of the Maritime Museum which included an old Coast Guard ship which was fascinating to crawl through. We also saw a whale museum and learned a lot!
Then we walked and saw sights including a church, gardens, a lake, had a beer in an old record store, and returned to the hotel for a spa and sauna.
We went back out for dinner (great cocktails) and went to bed exhausted.

  • Day 3, ION Adventure Hotel

    October 7, 2024 in Iceland ⋅ ☀️ 2 °C

Today we drove from Reykjavik through the National park to our hotel located next to a dormant (but active - not sure how that works 🤨) volcano and also a Geothermal power plant.
We stopped for a walk and climbed a mountain - it was freezing, maybe 2 degrees. When we arrived at the Motel and were greeted with champagne and followed that up with a short nap (jet lag hit) and then a spa.
Dinner was lovely and we saw the Northern Lights!!!!! The bar was fabulous and we settled in with dessert cocktails.

  • The Happy Accident

    October 9, 2024 in Iceland ⋅ ☀️ -3 °C

Today we made a five hour Pitstop because we had three bald tyres on our car. Unexpected ice, snow and temperatures meant we were not going to be safe to complete our itinerary. It was a scary trip back driving on snow and ice (watch the video), but Lava Rentals came good, giving us new studded tyres and a one day refund.
What this deviation allowed, was a trip to the Blue Lagoon and a chance to get some great lava video to accompany Fiona’s new song Lava and Snow. A happy accident!
We arrived at our next destination and the photos say everything! Stunning!!!

  • A Day of Discovery

    October 10, 2024 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

We started the day with no set plan and it unfolded beautifully.
Gullfoss Waterfalls were a lovely find but freezing and the pathways were slippery, nevertheless it was quite a sight.
We visited Iceland’s first eco village and couldn’t get out of there fast enough, we both felt unnerved by shades of ’deliverance’. We made a quick getaway and returned (escaped) back to the main road after a few giggles and lots and of jokes about the strange looking alien-like people we saw there.
Next we stumbled on what can only be described as the biggest photo opportunity of the trip - Kerid Crater, an extinct volcano with a small 55 metre deep lake. Stunning!

Today’s photo opportunities were complete after the Northern Lights visited the skies above us multiple times during the night.

  • Lava and Snow

    October 11, 2024 in Iceland ⋅ ☀️ 2 °C

Today was a BIG day, and our last in Iceland. We left our comfy warm hotel at 7am and ventured outside into -5 degrees for the long drive to Vik followed by an adventure tour to Katlan, Iceland’s super volcano (second to Yellowstone) that sits beneath a glacier.

We didn’t understand the concept of an inland tsunami previous to this experience. A glacier above a volcano means instant and explosive water when mixed with lava. Katlan blows historically every 30-70 years and is well overdue at 100 years since she last went up. Vik (local village) has prepared with large berms to slow down the tsunami and buy time to evacuate to higher ground, should the need arise. 😬

So… we took a leap of faith and ventured into an ice-cave in the glacier that sits above the volcano.

Wow. The photos say it all, the glacier mostly appears black from ash, but inside the naturally occurring cave (created by water) you can see clear ice created by the one hundred year old glacier (a youngster in glacial terms)

Then on to a unique demonstration where we experienced real lava up close and felt the intensity of the heat (800 degrees celcius), I thought my iPhone was going to melt.

We visited a black volcanic sand beach, followed by a mandatory waterfall stop and then drove to Keflavík to stay in an ordinary but expensive airport hotel ($200 for one steak, a salad and 2 gasses of wine).

Today we achieved our jobs to get the required video footage for Fiona’s new song Lava and Snow. What an interesting day.

Tomorrow we fly to Dublin. ☘️
