    Boat, walk, and beer

    Today we visited Copenhagen. We took the subway into the city and walked along the canal to the Amalienborg, the residence of the Danish Royal family, and watched the changing of the guards. Following that we took a canal tour. Nikolaj returned home with the boys and the rest of us continued walking and touring the city. During our walk we found another brewery Nørrebro Bryghus (noerrebrobryghus.dk). Cheers!Leer más

    School, Mermaid, and beer

    First day of school! (sort of)
    Today the boys joined Daniel and Emilie at school. They spent the first part of the day playing a real version of Fortnite, their favourite video game. The classes had created a real version for a school event. Their second period was cooking class and they got to make apple pie (they did not bring any home to share). And during their final period, Science and Math, Isaac and Oliver got to present their slideshow of photos from home. They also gave each of the students and teachers a Canada buff as a thank you for having them.

    So, while the kids were at school Jen and I went out for coffee, walked around a mall, visited The Little Mermaid statue and found a brewery (we shared a toast to my sister Jody's birthday) and food stall village (https://reffen.dk/en/) down by the harbour.    Leer más

    Today we rode the train into Copenhagen and took a city bus tour… seemed like a good way to spend a rainy morning. After our tour we headed towards Hard Rock Café for lunch. On our way we stumbled across Vesterbro Bryghus (a micro-brewery) and stopped for a flight. Following lunch the weather cleared and we did some walking around downtown Copenhagen. We climbed to the top of The Round Tower (www.rundetaarn.dk) for a 34.8 m high view of Copenhagen.Leer más

    Visiting Sweden. Just a short road trip from Copenhagen across Oresund Strait.

    What brought us here?
    Geography, Google, beer and the Scandlines Ferry (and the Oresund Bridge brought us back)… only a short drive from Copenhagen (discovered through Google), a craft brewery to visit, and we add a new country to our trip, Welcome to Sweden.

    DYK: Crossing the Oresund Strait between Sweden and Denmark, The Oresund Bridge is the longest combined road and rail bridge in Europe. The bridge runs nearly 8 kilometres (5 miles) from the Swedish coast to the artificial island Peberholm in the middle of the strait. The crossing is completed by the 4-kilometre (2.5 mi) Drogden Tunnel from Peberholm to the Danish island of Amager.    Leer más

    Traveling Woes and Whoas!

    With the end of our adventure drawing near, it is time for another reflection…

    The pictures aren’t always great and the stories aren’t always exciting but the memories are special and unique.

    We are going places and seeing things but most important we are spending time with people. These people and the lives they are sharing with us are elevating this adventure from sight-seeing to life-changing.

    It is not always comfy, and sometimes it has been hot (and cold), some mornings have been early, and food isn’t always what you expected it to be but these are all pieces of the puzzle, a series of dots that when connected are taking us around the world.

    Did some grocery shopping, had to buy new socks, drove on the opposite side of the road (and vehicle), and even got a haircut... just a few of the ‘normal’ tasks that have been part of the adventure. A little different (ok, sometimes a lot different) and a little the same. Excitedly mundane and boringly enjoyable... all memorable memories.

    Everything we have seen, learned, visited, and experienced… all teasing us for more.    Leer más

    Legoland Day 2

    Even the light showers could not keep us away from Legoland today. We got there shortly after it opened, braved the rain and enjoyed our day. Rode some rides, attended driving school, conquered a Ninjago laser maze, ate Lego fries, explored Atlantis and wandered through Miniland.
    After a rest back at our holiday home we went to the Lalandia Aquadome water park. It closed earlier than we thought but we had time to check out the fun and enjoy the outdoor hot tub.    Leer más

    Everything is Awesome!

    Brick-tacular, brick-tastic, brick-mazing, all of these and more. Today we visited the Lego House. Part museum, part play ground, and all Lego, this attraction has numerous themed areas to inspire creativity and construction. With over 25 million Lego bricks available to play with you cannot get bored.

    DYK: The name LEGO is an abbreviation of the Danish words Leg Godt which means “play well”. It was later learned that LEGO also means “I put together” in Latin.    Leer más

    Our Lego fun continued with lunch at the MINICHEF restaurant where we ordered our food with Lego and picked it up from a Lego robot. Our visit ended with an expensive stop at the Lego Store. (Now to the suitcase store so we can bring it all home!)

    DYK: Stud and tube coupling system is the name given to the construction technique of Lego bricks which allows them to secure to each other but still easily disassemble.    Leer más

    A Copenhagen institution

    Our last full day in Copenhagen and the last day of our around the world Adventure of a Lifetime… time to seriously think about our return home. The weather was beautiful today and we headed out to visit the Carlsberg Brewery and ExBEERience. We rode in a horse-drawn carriage pulled by 2 of the Carlsberg draught horses, toured the buildings and got to enjoy a beer at the Courtyard Bar.Leer más

    Thank you and good-bye Denmark.
    Reunited with an old friend and made some new ones. Our time in Denmark has been wonderful and we are leaving with lots of memories and a long list of reasons to return.     Touchdown, back on Canadian soil. Not really sure what to say here. This return home comes with mixed emotions. Of course we are happy to be back, to be with family and friends and enjoy the comfort of home, but at the same time it also marks the end of an amazing travel adventure.     Destination #11, Home Sweet Home

    We have traveled on planes, cars, trains, boats, ferries, buses, gondolas, funiculars, taxis, subways, carriages, horses, golf carts, paddleboards, kayaks and our feet… all took us around the world and back again.

    Seeing sights, reuniting with friends, visiting places, making memories... Kinda what it is all about. With some dirty laundry, a ton of pictures, a few souvenirs and NO REGRETS we have come home. Let's hope our journey encourages our international friends to come and visit, our door is open.

    DYK: During this trip around the world we traveled for 82 days, visited 13 countries, flew over 62000 kilometers during over 87 hours on 19 flights, connected with 12 friends (and their families) and took over 8000 pictures… add it all up and this one equals the Adventure of a Lifetime.     Many good things do come to an end, this we have learned with our return from our adventure. Unfortunately, that also means our blog too must end.

    We have enjoyed sharing our stories and pictures. This travel blog was our opportunity to offer family and friends a glimpse of our adventures and antics. Thank you to all those who have followed us around the world. And a special thank you to those who ‘Liked’ and commented on our posts… it has been rewarding to know people are interested in what we are up to.

    So, this is the Traveling Ryan Family, signing off from our Adventure of a Lifetime. There are still lots of places to see and people to visit, so until next time!

    Adventure of a Lifetime!

    We have been home now for almost 2 weeks and today is Oliver's 10th birthday… seems like as good a day as any to post one final message.

    First of all, Happy 10th Birthday to our youngest traveler Oliver. He was a trooper, a performer and a source of laughter for our entire 82 days of travel. The things he saw before his 10th birthday would make many envious, and hopefully many more impressed. He has already had the chance to present his adventure to his grade 5 class, and is working on another assignment based on part of our trip. We hope he remains inspired to travel, explore and be adventurous... and to always share, his joy, his humour and his heart. On to double-digits and whatever comes next.

    And finally, The Traveling Ryan Family... staying local for a while. Looking forward to reminiscing, sharing and getting back to normal. Thank you again for the kind words and appreciation, we consider ourselves so fortunate to have been able to dream, plan, and complete this adventure and to share a taste of it with all of you.

    Following a few more minor tweaks and a very last spellcheck we will be formatting this blog into a hardcover scrapbook and sending it to print. Feel free to come visit and flip through the pages.
