Interesting struggles with ATC. I was overtaken by a Cessna while I was on Visual Approach Clearance, and about to call Final. Last moment, waved off and re-routed to start again. While re-routed, a C-47 strafed me at about 500 feet, with no warning to either of us, until after-the-fact. Africa is an interesting continent to fly about. My last leg (wink....happens to be American Thanksgiving Day), I was so determined to get down the coast, I flew out in marginal VFR, and it was really soup. I had visited the tower earlier, and shared some bitcoin around.... I was cleared for take-off and ATC helped me all that last flight.Read more

  • DXNG - Niamtougou, Togo

    November 29, 2024 in Togo ⋅ 🌩️ 90 °F

I'm finding that Snicker Bars are even better currency over BitCoin... but they seem to take both. Had to grease some wheels to get out of the soup that I knew would turn nice soon in route out of DNIB to DNIL (socked int) and then rolling towards DXNG and even chased a C-47 since it seems like ATC missed that one... LOL.
Benin's Tourou Airport is STILL under construction. I think when it's finished it will be awesome and replace the aging Parakou DBBP airport.
Had yet another wierd ATC situation landing in DXNG - Niamtougou International Airport... no tower or infrastructure yet planes coming and going.... Just couldn't get help landing, so I just imagined it was NON-Towered and called each phase over the radio.
Trying to leave DXNG... but had a taxiway standoff, ATC here in Togo, just SUCK. However, while ATC was struggling, watching a Heli pass over me in the taxiway was interesting...then this PERFECT hover and all his exhaust found its way to me.... Open Cockpit no joy.

Transit flight so I chose to get more night time in the book. Headed out just after 4AM, so I only scored 0.2 hours night according to XP Log, but sure seemed like more.
DIBK to DIKO both in Cote d'Ivoire.
Enjoyed watching a Red Bull Corsair F4-U taxi on off as I was powering down. I'm looking forward to breakfast and some ME time.

  • GATB - Tombouctou Airport, Mail

    December 7, 2024 in Mali ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

    BBQ Chicken Plate Sale!!!!
Come to GATB - Tombouctou Aiport (Tombouctou, Timbuktu, Mali) as I had a major BIRD STRIKE during Visual Landing and was just about to call Final once ATC traffic channel was clear. Unfortunately, I had no way to notify ATC of emergency and I had no option but to "disobey" ATC and completed my landing and as I taxied the engine failed and I rolled of the active. Some folks helped me push "Koa" to a parking spot near a maintenance shop.
I had the displeasure of meeting airport safety staff and I had to explain it all once I settled and after some apologies, some of my green tea packets and Snickers bars, and much more Crypto currency I was forgiven. On an upnote, I was blessed by the ground crew that stayed and helped me pluck meat, bone, viscera, and feathers from my engine. Someone in the crew even made some Jinjinbere, a super refreshing ginger, lemon, and sugar drink. It really helped during the clean up.
Now it's time to call a Lyft or Uber to the Hendrina Khan Hotel, named after the original owner's wife. Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, is known as the architect of Pakistan's nuclear program.
Time for beer and rest after a nice Malian meal in the open-air restaurant. Hope chicken isn't the special today...or any time soon.
While I as eating a "beef" steak dinner, yet another "offical" from the Mali Bird Safety (BS) Unit came to my table and tried to "FINE" me for hitting some rare birds. I called his BS, and said I had ATC clearance so therefore priority and it was the local birds that didn't contact ATC and didn't comply though they fly around the area all the time and they recklessly crossed my flight path.
I also pointed out that I think he dropped some Snickers bars and US dollars on the floor near my table... He smiled and walked out, ordering a chicken dinner take-out.

  • DRZR- Zinder, Niger

    December 9, 2024 in Niger ⋅ ☀️ 90 °F

Wildest flight EVER! As I was working my way down Niger after some time in Timbuktu, Mali, ForeFlight lights up that Mali air space is suddenly Temporary Restricted Airspace for the entire country with the only exceptions GAT IFR on ATS Airways and Military Aircraft.
I got a little freaked out wondering if they are looking for me, because while I was flying from DRZA (Mano Dayak, Niger) down to DRZR (Zinder, Niger) I was followed, harassed, and bullied the whole 3 hour trip. I had nearly 10 aircraft constantly converging on me, even as I was flying at such a slow rate of speed. Planes would be within 400 feet of me and drop in front of me and I would get bounced around hard by their wake turbulence. Jerks! Even one Mustang was in such a hurry to chase me down that it was flying with it's GPU still attached.
The whole flight, I wondered who I didn't pay off.... then I realized that darn Bird Safety fellow said he was well-connected and I guess now I should have paid him more Snickers, and/or crypto-currency.
    * Sim note... setting AI aircraft to "allow combat" and those buggah's will work the merge.

    December 11, 2024 in Nigeria ⋅ ☁️ 91 °F

Couple more transit flights in Nigeria, one at night to get hours and both flights were brutal as to 10 other aircraft sure seemed determined to hunt me down and stay VERY CLOSE. Also found 2 more airports that are listed in ForeFlight and shown in my Orthos...but X-Plane and ATC no see em'.
Super fun and frustrating at the same time. Sure is hard to properly contact ATC when I keep getting proximity warnings from them and from ForeFlight.

  • Staying at GMO airport

    December 14, 2024 in Nigeria ⋅ ⛅ 90 °F

I'm having issues logging in with product code and X-Plane ID (reported to support), so I'm limited to DEMO time and place.
BUUUUTTTT, I made the best of it. Got me another aircraft to help with the colder and longer flights in the future. So for 15 minutes at a time, I am practicing T&Gs and getting familiar with the Texan T-6G.
According to KHAMSIN STUDIO - Manual T6-G
    --
Engine Failures: Too high rpm settings are not as dangerous as too high manifold pressure settings. If flying more than 5 minutes with a high manifold pressure (like above 34 in. Hg) this might lead to a faulty engine. You will notice this by smoke coming out of the engine and losing some power. A manifold pressure above 36 will lead into the faulty engine within seconds!
To “fix” the faulty engine you can fly for some time with a lower manifold pressure setting. The smoke will vanish over time and the power will gradually sneak in again. Also if both main tires are resting on the ground and the engine does com to a full stop (prop not turning anymore) the engine will instantly be fixed completely. So no need to reload the aircraft after engine failure. Just land safely, shut down the engine and you are good to go for another try.
    --
Super fun and start-up takes some work and a clear understanding of the checklist to follow. LOVE IT.

So this is what warm is like... LOL
Enclosed cockpit of the T-6G Texan is a benefit for sure. I am not so worried about losing a Snickers Bar wrapper to the wind gods and no longer does my green tea get cold so fast.... I turned over the Stearman to my Support Team. They will pack up"Koa" and have her run though all the maintenance, repair, and upgrades possible, so the Stearman will be flown again soon. But for now, I am learning more about "Paniolo," and digging the longer legs and warm of this T-6G Texan.

Enjoying the warmth and longer legs I can get with "Paniolo" a T-6G Texan that I recently acquired and had worked up for some serious mileage and adventures.
ATC routing is still very aggressive, and these big boys are giving me h### with their wake turbulence.
Currently in transit to get to my next World Heritage Site in Chad.
I was able to work in a 4.4 hour flight day... Had to refuel at FTTI and I am now at FTTC - Abeche, Ouaddai, Chad (TD)

  • HLTD, Gharmes, Libya

    December 22, 2024 in Libya ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

Well, with my large stash of Snickers Bars, Green Tea, and ALOHA, it's been okay so far. Though, at these small, out-in-the-boonies airports I am sleeping at any FBO available so I can be close by my Texan. Currently at HLTD in Gharmes, Libya after flying over the first 2 of 5 World Heritage Sites in this stunning country landscape. I should be hitting the coast and to Tripoli later today. It's an interesting read to see the Rock-Art Sites of Tadrart Acacus.

    Libya Travel Advisory
U.S. DEPARTMENT of STATE — BUREAU of CONSULAR AFFAIRS
    August 1, 2024
Libya - Level 4: Do Not Travel
    Crime | Terrorism |Civil Unrest | Kidnapping/Hostage Taking | Other risks
Do not travel to Libya due to crime, terrorism, unexploded landmines, civil unrest, kidnapping, and armed conflict.
Country Summary: Crime levels in Libya remain high, including the threat of kidnapping for ransom. U.S. citizens have been targets of these crimes.
Terrorist groups are present in Libya. No terrorist incidents that involved foreigners have been publicly reported in Libya since 2015. Nevertheless, terrorist attacks could occur with little or no warning, targeting public spaces like tourist locations, hotels, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, and government facilities.
Kidnapping is widespread, and victims have included U.S. citizens. Kidnappers may take advantage of unplanned opportunities. Criminal or armed individuals or groups have threatened to and/or have seized or detained and threatened to kill, injure, or continue to detain individuals in order to compel a third party (including a governmental organization) to do or abstain from doing something as a condition of release.
Unexploded landmines, cluster munitions, and unexploded ammunition are a hazard throughout Libya. Heed land mine warning signs. Do not venture off the road into areas marked with red and white plastic tape. Avoid roadside ditches, shoulders, and unmarked trails. Never touch anything resembling unexploded munitions. Landmines do exist in populated areas due to numerous ground offensives in the last decade.
Outbreaks of violence between competing armed groups can occur with little warning and have the potential to impact U.S. citizens. The capital, Tripoli, and other cities, such as Surman, Al-Jufra, Misrata, Ajdabiya, Benghazi, and Zuwara, have witnessed fighting among armed groups. Hotels and airports frequented by U.S. citizens have been the targets of these attacks. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.
Armed groups sometimes detain travelers for arbitrary reasons, do not grant detainees access to a lawyer or a legal process, and do not allow detainees to inform others of their status. U.S. citizens should carry proof of citizenship and valid immigration status at all times, but having these documents does not guarantee fair treatment.
While there are operational international airports in Libya with regular domestic and international flights, flights are often delayed, rerouted, and cancelled without warning. The U.S. government prohibits U.S. commercial aviation operations within Libyan airspace.
Due to risks to civil aviation operating within or in the vicinity of Libya, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) and/or a Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR). For more information U.S. citizens should consult the Federal Aviation Administration’s Prohibitions, Restrictions and Notices.
The Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard has determined that effective anti-terrorism measures are not in place in Libyan ports and has imposed conditions of entry on vessels that arrive in U.S. ports having visited ports in Libya. Mariners and passengers traveling through the ports of Libya should exercise caution.
The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency or routine assistance to U.S. citizens in Libya, as the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli suspended its operations in July 2014.
U.S. citizens in Libya in need of routine consular services should contact the U.S. Embassy in Tunis, Tunisia for assistance. To contact the U.S. Embassy in Tunis, click here.
U.S. citizens who are in Libya are urged to depart as soon as possible via commercial means if possible. U.S. citizens who are seeking U.S. government assistance to depart should email complete biographic details and contact information (email and phone number), as well as U.S. passport number, to TunisACS@state.gov.
The Department of State will continue to provide information via the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), Embassy Libya's web page, Travel.State.Gov, Facebook, and Twitter/X.
Read the country information page for additional information on travel to Libya.
If you decide to travel to Libya:
    • Visit our website for Travel to High-Risk Areas.
    • Carry proof of citizenship and valid immigration status at all times.
    • Avoid demonstrations and crowds.
    • Make contingency plans to leave.
    • Draft a will and designate appropriate insurance beneficiaries and/or a power of attorney.
    • Discuss a plan with loved ones regarding care/custody of children, pets, property, belongings, non-liquid assets (collections, artwork, etc.), funeral wishes, etcetera.
    • Establish your own personal security plan in coordination with your family, and employer or host organization, so that they can monitor your safety and location. This plan should specify whom you would contact first, and how that person should share information.
    • Appoint one family member to serve as the point of contact with kidnappers/hostage-takers, media, U.S. and host country government agencies, and members of Congress if you are kidnapped, taken hostage, or detained.
    • Consider consulting with a professional security organization.
    • Do not touch unknown metal objects and avoid traveling off well-used roads, tracks, and paths due to risk of unexploded ordnance.

Merry Christmas! As some may know, I am touring the world and visiting every World Heritage Site. Having Started in Africa, I was moving along the coast of Libya and into Egypt, when I realized that if I do some good flight planning, I could fly over Bethlehem and the WHS - Old Jerusalem on Christmas Day! Well, I'm now relaxing at LLBG - Ben Gurion International Airport. Time to order Chinese take-out and watch a movie. Seeing the sites via Ortho4XP is aweseome, I even did a T&G at the Old Jerusalem Airport which closed a few years back, but still visible with Ortho and was fun to land at.Read more

I was a little concerned rolling out of Ben Gurion LLBG and into Cairo (HECA), but since I didn't set-up any AI traffic, I wasn't escorted or SAMd by anyone in the area. I did cross into Egypt at 10K just so EVERYONE could see me, but the headwinds were 29kt so I eventually dropped down into a 3kt headwind. I checked out the start of the Suez Canal and noticed MIL bases that I didn't risk landing at. The weather was great and the ortho tiles are stunning and I had a nice landing WAAAAYY out on 23L which was a cross-country trek by taxi way to my assigned parking. The airport IS nice thanks to @Mastafa Hariday.Read more

  • HEBS - Ben Suef Airbase, Egypt

    December 27, 2024 in Egypt ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

Soooo, this is a bit awkward. In my last post, I mentioned that it's safe for me to fly around Egypt because I checked x-plane and there are no Egyptian Air Force threats to me.... Well, I am currently at HEBS - Beni Suef Air Base, and the Commanding General and his staff encouraged me to let them check out my Texan and then they would show me a surprise too.
SA-2 Bloodhound sites all around that base. YIKES!!!!!

I didn't get shot down for several reasons but it seems the 2 main reasons.... they have been following my Air Tour, AND several of the staff, including the Commanding General started their aviation career in the T-6 Texan! I will chill here for a couple of days and let them do some T&Gs and close flights, and they promised me safe travel throughout all of Egypt and may even pick up an escort. They also will do some maintenance for me and refuel me with some premium quality fuel.

    WHEW!

  • HEGN - Hurghada, Egypt

    December 28, 2024 in Egypt ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

When a Commanding General asks me to allow him to be copilot from HETR to HEGN, I enthusiastically say yes... He actually is a very cool dude. He is an aviator at heart that, "my rank landed me at a desk and far away from a cockpit." He didn't talk about himself at all. He stayed away from politics and those kinds of topics. He talked much about his love of flying and his early memories in the T-6; asked questions about my Air Tour adventures, and pointed out the vast beauty of Egypt. He was patriotic and proud of his nation's long history.
We stayed below the cloud layer for most of the trip so we could enjoy the views.
I was even authorized to buzz the tower.... by him. And a bit of a surprise to the tower until they realized who was my copilot. Mahmoud is a good man, and good aviator.

Saw WHS St. Catherine Area, Wadi Al-Htan, and Historic Cairo, and lots of sand, everywhere.
