    Roermond, the port of call for all those travelling from Eindhoven airport on towards Düsseldorf. It's not quite the ancient silk route, but it is quick becoming a familiar stop off point on the route from Manchester to Düsseldorf of all those flying with a 36 euro return ticket.

    I headed straight over from work to pick David up. We met in an Irish bar on the strip in front of the train station. David had arrvied 30 minutes earlier and had had a wander abou the town. He said he really liked it and questioned why he'd never heard of the town before.

  • Bremen at Night

    Winter, it is now winter. And the night draws in around four o'clock. On Saturday morning, I showed David around Düsseldorf before heading up to Bremen at 1pm to meet Irish. Bremen is a long way north -- 50km from the north sea -- and when we got there it was already dark. So my first experience of Bremen was walking around the Altstadt where all the old, proud Hanseatic buildings atmospherically were lit up and the Christmas market was bustling with its first weekend of trade. The sky was dark, the air was cold and bit deep and a thin layer of snow covered the market square.Read more

    I dropped David of at Eindhoven airport, then headed into the town itself for a gander around. I had read that it had been unceremoniously voted as the 'most boring city in Benelux', so I wasn't expecting much. And although it does lack the canals and oldie wordie feel of the more northern Dutch cities, it is nonetheless clean and pleasant.Read more
