• Hamburg (Day 2)

    September 12, 2015 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Ole has some business to do so he drops us off in the city to wonder around. There's a protest on about something we don't understand but the most amazing fact is that they have a DJ playing house music in the background - anyway we jump in to take a selfie. We've been putting Ole parents Nespresso machine through its paces so we stumble across a Nespresso shop and realise that they give you free coffees and biscuits! - This is now a daily ritual for us as we put on a show pretending to be interested in buying a fancy machine. We catch up with Ole and his mates for lunch at the Currywrust restuarant.

Ole had planned to take us flying in the Cessna that he rents in the arvo but the approaching heavy clouds forced us to reconsider and instead he took us sailing in the lake in the city - brilliant and hilarious experience with us trying not to crash into other yachts and learning how to avoid getting knocked out by the boom. Ole is a gun as his team has just finished a world title race in Germany last week where his team came 5th! On the way back home we visit the Elb tunnel which is now a redundant cross-river tunnel that open to the public to walk through. Built in 1911 the construction is impressive with multiple lifts to transport the vehicles down. At on 1.9m wide at the base it's a squeeze for any modern day vehicle.

It's getting dark so it's time to knock down a few bevvies and head into town. Ole is a brilliant host and takes us to all the hotspots including the street food market, red light district, 99cent bar and of course a Irish pub to dance the night away ensuring we sample Germany's finest booze along the way.

5am and we stumble to the fish market for an amazing fish burger and watch a massive cruise ship navigate through the harbour. What an incredible night - time for bed
