      De Lifou a Alotau

      Nous avons quitté Lifou hier soir à 18h00 pour une navigation de 1196 Mn dans la mer de corail en direction d’alotau en Papouasie Nouvelle Guinée. Nous remontons vers l’équateur la chaleur sur le pont est difficilement supportable. A 12h00 le vent a forci avec des vagues de 3m, la température de l’eau de mer est de 30deg et celle de l’air a 26deg, avec une humidité très importante.
      Ce soir nous reculons nos montres d’une heure

      24 Mars, notre 78ème jour de croisière, soit les 2/3 de notre voyage. Nous naviguerons toute la journée dans la mer de corail, qui tire son nom de la grande barrière, qui la borde a l’ouest. Elle est connue pour la célèbre bataille qui vit s’affronter les américains aux japonais en Mai 1942.

      Flaute Korallenmeer Tag 2/7

      Den ganzen Tag über reduziert sich die Stärke des Windes und pendelt sich auf 8-10kt ein so das wir Motoren.

      Um in dem angekündigten Windfeld ab Montag wieder Segel setzen zu können, müssen wir heute Strecke machen, damit wir danach einen günstigen Windeinfallswinkel für die nächsten Tage bekommen.

      Essen, Schlafen, Wache bestimmen den Tag und am Nachmittag gibts frisch gebackenen Bananenkuchen der zum Sonntag unser Highlight wird.

      Abends gibt es Lasagne zu bewölktem Himmel und halben Mond.

      Great Barrierreef • Eastside

      Wir verlassen die Watsons Bay auf Lizzard Island und segeln nach Norden.

      Das Barriereriff lassen wir am Heeks Reef hinter uns liegen und Segeln mit 7kt bei starkem Wind innerhalb der australischen Hoheitsgewässer an der Ostseite des Riffs Kurs Nordwest vorbei an Cape Melville. Mit dem verlassen der seichten Gewässer schiebt jetzt zusätzlich die Welle von hinten nach und das Schiff surft mehrmals mit bis zu 11,4kt Fahrt über Grund im über 2000m tiefen Ozean.

      Nachts nehmen wir Fahrt aus dem Schiff, um nicht zu zeitig an der Einfahrt nördlich des Cat Reef anzukommen. Bei Tageslicht sind die engen Durchfahrten durch das Barriereriff sicherer, da Seezeichen und Wasserfarben zusätzlich zu den GPS-Karten als Hilfsmittel genutzt werden können.

      Mit dem Sonnenuntergang schlägt Karl seine Schleppangel an und das Abendessen wird sofort abgeändert. Der Fang diesmal ist eine 70cm große Golddorade auch Mahi Mahi genannt und besticht durch seine außerordentliche Färbung von Gold bis ins Türkisgrüne und hervorragendem Geschmack.

      Es wird Nacht und erste Wärmegewitter schütten wie aus Kübeln Wasser vom Himmel, ich habe Nachtwache ab 02:00 Uhr und hoffe trocken durchzukommen.      Read more

      Itinerary Change #4: No Cooktown For Us!

      Day 1 of 3 days at sea.

      Instead of visiting Cooktown on the Cape York Peninsula of Far North Queensland today, we are having a sea day … cruising the Coral Sea … weaving in and out of the Great Barrier Reef as we make on our way to Darwin.

      We are 0 for 2 where Cooktown is concerned.

      The first time Cooktown was canceled was on our 2017 world cruise. On that occasion, the culprit was the weather. Insignia got as far as lowering its tenders to transport pier-side paraphernalia to prepare for the arrival of passengers. The tenders turned back before they ever got ashore. The seas were just too rough; the rain was coming down in sheets.

      The weather is the culprit for this cancelation as well. Not the weather at present however, as we are having a sunny day today … with calm seas and light winds. Rather, the weather in question this time is ex Cyclone Jasper.

      The first named storm of the 2023-2024 Cyclone Season for Australia, Jasper formed on 2 December, became a Category 4 severe tropical cyclone at its peak on 8 December, and finally dissipated on 18 December. Long-lived definitely, it brought disastrous, drenching rain … dropping some 88.5+ inches in places … with sustained winds in the range of 120-140 mph.

      Having watched the news coverage of the storm while we were in Sydney, we were pleasantly surprised that we were able to dock in Cairns yesterday. We kept our fingers crossed for Cooktown. But when we found the cancelation letter from GM Dimitris in the cabin upon departure from Townsville on the 26th, we were not surprised.

      Last night, Captain Giulio further explained the reasoning for the cancelation. The Australian Government has designated the Far North QLD as a natural disaster area. The military has been activated to help with the clean-up. Communities remain cut off. And contaminated water carries bacteria that can lead to some serious illness. IMHO … all good reasons for us to not venture into the area.

      Our thoughts are with all the people affected by the disaster. Hopefully the area will have recovered by the time we drive back up this way on our overland. Perhaps third time will be the charm for Cooktown.      Read more

      LIFOU : Neukaledonien 🇳🇨
      Diese Destination ist am weitesten von zuhause entfernt und auch sehr fremd! Es ist keine Insel, sondern das größte, über dem Meeresspiegel liegende Korallenatoll der Welt. 🪸🪸🪸
      Die Lagune, die sich einst in der Inselmitte befand, ist heute von einem dichten tropischen Wald bedeckt.
      10.000 Einwohner werden auf 3 Stammesgebiete unterteilt.
      Und so begrüßen uns direkt nach dem Tendern die ersten „Stammesfürsten“ sehr freundlich! Mit ihren vielen Federn und der weißen Körperbemahlung, besonders im Gesicht, auf der dunklen Haut, sieht es alles sehr fremd für uns aus.
      Auch Kinder tragen diese traditionelle Bemahlung und den Schmuck.
      Dieser Teil der „ Insel „ ist sehr ursprünglich und touristisch nicht entwickelt. In einigen einfachen palmbedeckten Hütten werden Andenken, Tücher, Magnete und Muscheln 🐚 (ist verboten)🚫 verkauft. 🛖
      Es gibt weder Busse noch Taxis für uns. Nur Räder kann man leihen ( ohne Garantie ) !!
      Wir gehen zum naturbelassen Sandstrand, kaufen eine leckere Kokosnuss 🥥 und sitzen unter Palmen 🌴 ! Es ist sehr heiß hier, 29 Grad!
      Auch die paar Einheimischen liegen dösend im Schatten und hören entspannte Musik.
      Hier kennt keiner Stress 🤩
      Es ist sehr schön hier, aber wenn man von MYSTERY ISLAND kommt ist man paradiesisch verwöhnt.
      Das Schnorcheln im kristallklaren warmen Wasser ( 29 Grad ) macht viel Spaß. Die exotischen Fische knabbern an meinen pinken Badeschuhen! Nur die große Wasserschildkröte interessiert sich nicht dafür!
      Um 17.30 Uhr legt die AUDAsol ab. Bei der bekannten Auslaufmusik „Sail Away „
      genießen wir einen leckeren Wein mit Tapas an der Ocean Bar.
      Reiner und einige Bekannte essen im Brauhaus abends : Grünkohl mit Schweinebauch 🐷. Da bevorzuge ich doch lieber Garnelen 🍤 ( Teppanyaki) im East Restaurant.
      Das Interview mit der First Purserin in der Prime Time ist sehr spannend. Sie ist zuständig für alle Absprachen mit den Behörden und ist beim Anlegemanöver ganz vorne mit dabei, um alles für unseren Landgang zu organisieren und um die Freigabe des Schiffes zu erhalten.
      Die heutigen Eindrücke waren so vielfältig und wir gehen mal früh ins Bett. 👍      Read more

      Great Barrier Reef

      Diving the Great Barrier Reef was amazing. Looking at our itinerary for this cruise, this was my number one item on the Bucket List. It did not disappoint.
      We took a 90 minute boat ride to a huge platform on the reef. From the platform we took a smaller boat to the edge of the reef wall and snorkeled. Incredible coral and fish.Read more

      New Itinerary.

      February 24, Coral Sea ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

      Well, the cat is finally out of the bag so to speak. We are not going through the Red Sea and into the Suez Canal as originally planned. Instead we will go around the Horn of Africa. The activities in the new ports look great for those of us interested in wildlife. Others may choose to fly home and receive appropriate compensation.

      Meanwhile we continue to sail through the Coral Sea toward Thursday Island and Torres Strait. Because the Coral Sea is full of coral reefs (hence the name) we have a reef pilot who has extensive knowledge of the Great Barrier Reef system on board. We are also seeing more dolphins, turtles and gulls. Unfortunately I have not been quick enough to catch them on film.      Read more

      We spent the day on the island of New Caledonia. It is at once French and Melanesian. There are baguettes and bistros alongside Kanak people with their brightly colored clothing. We walked and snorkeled and had a pleasant day in what seemed to be the biggest city we've been in since LA.
      We are currently headed to Sydney through the Coral Sea and into the Tasmanian sea which are typically rough so it will be an interesting couple of days!      Read more
