Cave with human bones

Another place nearby that wasn't marked by any board or traxk was the 2 storied cave with human bones but it was marked on Maps.me so we decided to find it. We walked across the lava fields followingLeggi altro
Hare Vaka with petroglyphs

Our next destination was Hare Vaka. These are ruins of an early settlement on the island. They are spread in a lava field. The remains of the walls of the rooms have some petroglyphs carved on them.Leggi altro

Swimming time

Ahu Nau Nau

On the Anakena beach, there is Ahu Nau Nau with 7 moais, some ruins of the earliest settlement on the island and other moais.

Puna Pau viewpoint

From the top of the crater, there were lovely views of Hanga Roa and the crater used to extract the stones for the pukaos. The crater is rich in red scoria or hani-hani used for making the hats andLeggi altro

The next stop was at Puna Pau. It is a volcanic crater where the pukao (hats of the moai) were carved. There are about 20 carved pukaos lying around carved and ready to be tranported. Many of theLeggi altro

The next stop was about 300 mts away at Ahu Akivi. It has 7 Moai said to be 7 initial explorers sent to explore the island lead by Hotu Matu'a.

Village ruins near Ana Te Pahu

Near the entrance, slightly away from the track, one can also see the ruins of a village. Now, only the lowermost parts of the walls remain. These were made from lava blocks shaped into bricks andLeggi altro

At around 1 pm, after walking inside the cave for more than an hour, we existed the cave in the middle of lava fields through a tiny hole in the roof of the cave. It was a fantastic experience.

We continued to explore deeper and deeper into the cave. Most of the time, it was a horizontal walk with not much ascent or descent. We did come across some chambers that didn't have any furtherLeggi altro

It was a pretty cool cave to walk inside. There were quite many chambers and we also saw some exits on the way. There was no light deep inside, so we had to use our cellphone flash lights as torches.

The sunset that never happened

A nice crowd was gathered at Tahai. People had bought picnic baskets and sheets. It had a nice festive evening feel about it. But, the sunset never happened. There were heavy clouds near the horizonLeggi altro

At the end of the cliff, there were petroglyphs commemorating the birdmen from each year.

There were panoramic views of the Rano Kao crater from the end of the walk to the cliff edge.

We were in with 30 min to closing when we met 2 more guards that told us they were closing in 15 min. We told them we were informed that we had 30 min and we will stay till 5:30 pm. They didn't sayLeggi altro

We reached the entrance of the old Orongo village at about 5 pm. We were told that it would be closing at 5:30 pm and that it takes about 2 hours to see everything. We still decided to go in.
