Cueva Galaxias was a bit bigger than the Cueva Infierno. The person at the ticket counter knew a little English so it was a bit easier for us to understand the formation of the cave. It was his father who jad found the cave along with another person.
Next to this cave was another cave that is also called Cueva Diablo since they had found a pre-Inca cemetery there.Læs mere

This is a sub-aquatic cave formed prior to the formation of the glaciers when volcanic eruptions took place when the lake that used to cover the Salar still existed. Inside you can see calcified shapes of magma that solidified as they hit the water.Læs mere

Cueva Galaxias - Inner Chamber

The innermost chamber had even more delicate formations. This cave had been developed a bit more with tourists in mind when compared to the Cueva Infierno.
One of the formations was so fine that one could almost see the lights on the other side. It almost looked like a heart chamber with veins visible through.Læs mere

From the Cueva Galaxias, we drove towards the village of San Pedro de Quemes. Its a nice small town in the middle of nowhere. There are some pre-Inca ruins in the village.
This is the place where one can turn South towards the Chile Atacama border. There are many beautiful lakes in the region.Læs mere

To Sud Lipez

From San Pedro de Quemes, we started our journey down South into Sud Lipez, a very high altitude region in the altiplano with many colorful lakes and amazing scenery.
Just a few kms from the town, we saw the ever so rare Rhea and a herd of Vicuñas.
Rheas are a species of flightless birds from the family of Ostriches and Emus. They are indeed very rare so this sighting was special.
Vicuñas are a species of camelids and similar to the llamas but very lean and agile. They look almost like african antelopes with an elongated neck.
The road South was a very isolated one with amazing landscapes around. We hardly saw any other vehicle on the way.Læs mere

On the way, we crossed over to the South over the railway line at Chiguana. As we approached the post, we were greeted by the friendly army people. Unfortunately due to the lack of a common language, the interaction was very limited.
This place is really in the middle of nowhere and I guess they were happy to interact with some living souls (us) besides themselves.Læs mere

The road further south was very dry and dusty. It was quite windy as well. It was like a dust bowl where the constant wind and the heat from the sun kicked up a series of Dust Devils all across the plains.

Further climb into the mountains

It was the 1st in a series of lakes we would be seeing as we travel further.

We drove on a bit further on the high altitude dusty road tikk we reached Laguna Hedionda.

Laguna Hedionda (Spanish for "stinking lake") is a saline lake in the Nor Lípez Province, Potosí Department in Bolivia. It is notable for various migratory species of pink and white flamingos. We saw many flocks of them feeding all over the lake.

Laguna Hedionda is one of the nine small saline lakes in the Andean Altiplano. It lies at an altitude of 4,121 metres (13,520 ft), with an area of 3 square kilometres (1.2 sq mi). Salt flats and bofedales (wetlands) are spread over the periphery of the lake. It is in a very remote area where human habitation is negligible.Læs mere

Laguna Hedionda is quite a big lake. We spent quite sometime driving along the edge of the lake and stopping at various points. The mountains around and the colors of the lake and sky along with the bright red of the flamingos made it a very memorable moment.Læs mere

Our next stopover was the Laguna Ramaditas just another 2 kms from Laguna Negra.
It was quite cold and windy there. The time was about 6:30 pm, almost sunset time and the nearest village where we could hope to find a place to stay was near Laguna Colorado almost 80 kms away over dusty broken high altitude road.

Desert Snow

The white color of snow in one of the desert valley was accentuated by the light brown of the desert sand below. The constant wind blowing through the narrow valley gave some interesting shapes to the snow.
It was as if it was an alien planet where we had been dropped off.

Night in the altiplano

By 7:30 even the twilight was fading away. The reflection of the sun light onto the few specs of clouds in the clear sky created beautiful colors keeping the light alive for a bit longer.
On the way, among very high altitude desert, we saw a board for a hotel (Hotel Takya El Desierto) and decided to check it out and stay over if it was not very expensive.
The cost of the rooms in the hotel was in hundreds of dollars so we dropped the idea and decided to continue as per the earlier planLæs mere

Milky Way in the desert night

Soon, it was pitch dark and the stars came out. The sky was full of tiny bits of lights in every conceivable corner. It was a breath taking sight.
This is how the sky should look like when we don't have the light pollution of the cities.
We stopped in the middle of the road and I took my 1st picture ever of the Milky Way.
I had researched a lot about the ideal settings for the camera to capture the Milky Way and had pre-programmed it in my camera. The result was that without changing anything I got my picture in the very 1st try.
I was elated!!!

Milky Way Laguna Colorado

We reached Lake Colorado quite late in the night. There was a place right next to the lake where we could stay.
The lake lies within the limits of the Reserva Eduardo Avaroa National Park. We had to pay an entry fee of 150 b$ per head. The stay was per bed basis and including the food was 70 b$ per head. The place was very minimal but at least we had a place to stay.
Laguna Colorado is at a pretty high altitude of 4306 mts above sea level and it was quite cold in the night.
After having a minimal meal of pasta, Hristo went off to sleep while I went out to try some more pictures of the Milky Way and boy was I rewarded.. Have a look..Læs mere

Stay at Lake Colorado

Almost every tourist in this area leaves at 4:30 am in the morning to see the geysers at Sol de Mañana about 40 kms away since it is supposed to be more active in the cold of the morning. Since we had arrived late, neither of us wanted to wake up that early. We decided to wake up at our normal time of about 7 am.
The morning was sunny again. We decided to go back 15 kms in the direction we had come from, the previous night, to see the Arbol de Piedra (a stone tree) we had missed because it had been dark.
The Laguna Colorado is also called the Red Lake because of its bright red colour due to a red colored micro algae. The red color is more prominent when the sun is overhead so we decided to stop over at the lake on the way back from the Stone Tree.Læs mere

Arbol de Piedra is a stone tree that has been carved out of the howling, sandy winds. It sits in the middle of a high altitude desert. The altitude that I measured was 4606 mts above sea level.
It was extremely windy and we were the only ones around. We stopped there for a while appreciating the beauty of the art carved by nature.Læs mere
