    Sun Gate

    31 октября 2017 г., Боливия ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

The object is approximately 3.0 m tall and 4.0 m wide, and is constructed from a single piece of stone. The weight is estimated to be 10 tons. When rediscovered by European explorers in the mid-19th century, the megalith was lying horizontally and had a large crack through it. It presently stands in the location where it was found, although it is believed that this is not its original site, which remains uncertain.
The lintel is carved with 48 squares surrounding a central figure. Each square represents a character in the form of winged effigy. There are 32 effigies with human faces and 16 with condors' heads. All look to the central motif: the figure of a man with his head surrounded by 24 linear rays that may represent rays of the sun. The styled staffs held by the figure apparently symbolize thunder and lightning. Some historians and archaeologists believe that the central figure represents the “Sun God”, while others have linked it with the Inca god Viracocha.
Although there have been various modern interpretations of the mysterious inscriptions found on the object, the carvings that decorate the gate are believed to possess astronomical and/or astrological significance and may have served a calendrical purpose.
One theory states, its the chief in the middle and smaller chieftains all around. Others theorize it represents the months of the year and the time to grow different crops etc.

After this, we had our lunch break before continuing to Pumapunku.

    Pumapunku

    31 октября 2017 г., Боливия ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

The Pumapunku is a man-made platform built on an east–west axis like the Akapana. It is a rectangular, terraced earthen mound faced with megalithic blocks. It is 167.36 m wide along its north–south axis and 116.7 m broad along its east–west axis, and is 5 m tall. Identical 20-meter-wide projections extend 27.6 meters north and south from the northeast and southeast corners of the Pumapunku. Walled and unwalled courts and an esplanade are associated with this structure.
Most of the structure still lies under the ground with very few parts excavated yet. The blocks of stones are carved from a very hard volcanic stone but still have very precise angles and sides. There are even niches cut as rectangles with perfect 90 degrees angles.

San Pablo to San Pedro Tiquina crossing

    31 октября 2017 г., Боливия ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

On the way to Copacabana, the bus has to cross lake Titicaca and there is no bridge across. The bus goes in a raft and all the passengers disembark and cross via a launch. Then everyone gets on, on the other side.
It was a really beautiful sunset but due to the altitude, it was quite cold.

    Copacabana harbor

    1 ноября 2017 г., Боливия ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We were up early a bit before 7 am. Had our breakfast at 7:30 and then walked down to the Copacabana harbor to catch the 8:30 am boat for a trip to the Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun) and Isla del Luna (Island of the Moon) on the Titicaca lake. It was a nice sunny morning.
Copacabana has a lovely small village feel but as one nears the harbor, its quite obvious that everything there is made with tourists in mind. Still, a way better town than Puno on the other side of Titicaca in Peru.

Pilko Kaini Harbor (Isla del Sol)

    1 ноября 2017 г., Боливия ⋅ 🌙 5 °C

Isla del Sol ("Island of the Sun") is the largest island on Lake Titicaca, and part of Bolivian territory.
Inca legend says that Viracocha, the bearded god who created the universe, emerged from the waters of Lake Titicaca and created the sun at this location.
The son and daughter of Inti (The sun God) were sent out of one of the caves on the island with a golden staff. One of the siblings, Manco Cápac took this staff across the water and found Cusco between the mountains. He decided to start his Inca empire there.

On the way back from Isla de la Luna, we were dropped off at the Pilko Kaini harbor on the Isla del Sol. The Sun temple is visible from the harbor. There was a big reed boat also parked there. The plan was that the boat would drop us off here and then go to the Yumani port a bit North and those of us who wanted to walk will do the 1 hour trek between the harbours. The rest would remain on the boat.

Currently (Nov 2017) it is not possible to visit the northern or central sections of the island due to 'disagreements' between the communities there. The southern village has blockaded the centeral and northern villages since March over ongoing disagreements. Boats will only go to and from the southern end of the island and a sentry is posted on the path to prevent tourists from passing into the central section.
This basically meant we would miss out on a few of the important sights in the Northern part of the island that were supposed to be on the itinerary e.g.
The Rock of the Puma, or Titi Kharka, after which the lake is named. A short distance from the rock is the Inca Table, a low platform fashioned of stone, it was supposedly used for human sacrifices. The Footsteps of the Sun nearby are a set of natural impressions in rock.

    Sun Temple (Pilko Kaini)

    1 ноября 2017 г., Боливия ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Temple of Pilcocaina is the only surviving remains of the huge, pre-Incan city of Tiahuanco, now buried beneath the waters of Titicaca.
The stonework is quite rough. There are many triple-recessed entrances, recesses and domes in small rooms. They all form quite a labyrinth with paths going in and out, half a level up and down. The number three was very important to the Incas so triple-recessed entrances and alcoves would have had special significance.Читать далее

    Trek Pilko Kaini to Yumani

    1 ноября 2017 г., Боливия ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

The trek to Yumani starts from the steps leading up behind the Pilko Kaini. The views start getting better and better as one climbs higher. The Isla de la Luna is visible opposite and one can also see the cahin of the mountains behind Copacabana.
We also saw some llamas on the way. The climb wasn't very tough but due to the altitude, we were short of breath pretty often and walked slowly along the track made in the hillside.

Fountain of Youth & Inca Steps

    1 ноября 2017 г., Боливия ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Leading up from the Yumani harbour are a set of steps called the Inca Steps (Escalinata del Inca). At the top of the steps is a triple channel for the water from a natural spring called the Fountain of Youth (also called Fuente del Inca). The three springs are called Purification, Life and Youth and each of the three has a different taste. It is said that drinking a sip from all three provides eternal youth.
We filled up our bottles from here... Lets see, we might just live as youths forever 😄😄😄
