• Exploring Delphi, and travel to Meteora

    May 23 in Greece ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

Today we explored the Delphi ruins, and then made the journey to Meteora.

We started the day with breakfast and coffee at our hotel. Following, we walked through town to the ruins at Delphi, which were only .7 miles from our hotel.

The ruins were incredible to see, as there were many things still standing even after hundreds of years. We saw the ruins of the Delphic Oracle, the ruins of the temple of Apollo, a very large amphitheater, and an even larger athletic stadium.

Following the ruins, we checked out the onsite museum where we got to see old weapons, armor, statues, and parts of the ruins we had just explored that still had carvings, statues, or painting on them(these were removed from the ruins to preserve them).

After the museum, we hopped in the car for a 2 hour drive to the Meteora area. Meteora is known for its 6 monasteries built directly on top of rock columns by Greek Orthodox monks who were escaping conflict in their home of the mount Athos peninsula. At one point there were 24 of these monasteries(the first was built in the 1300’s), but today only the 6 remain.

Once we arrived in Meteora, we checked into our AirBnb in the city of Kalabaca, and then immediately headed to our first two monasteries. This was a 20 minute drive into the mountains with a ton of elevation gain, rewarded by views of the beautiful monasteries.

We visited both the Holy Trinity Monastery and St. Stephen’s monastery, and were wow’d by the architecture and location of these buildings, as well as by the views from them! We weren’t allowed to take pictures of the interiors, but got a ton of shots of the exteriors and views.

After exploring both monasteries we headed back to Kalabaca and grabbed a local Greek dinner, before calling it a night.
