    Tintagel Castle, Kynance Cove, St. Ives

    Today we visited Tintagel Castle(the mythical birthplace of King Arthur), and St. Ives, a bustling beach town in Cornwall.

    We started our day with breakfast and coffee at our Airbnb, and then hit the road to Tintagel Castle. It was tough single lane narrow driving, but we made it! Tintagel Castle is now just a ruin, but was built on a really cool promontory sticking out into the ocean. Historically this promontory was connected to the mainland via a land bridge, but the bulk of that has now collapsed and so you get to the promontory via walking bridge. We explored the ruins, and also admired the coast from the vantage point afforded from the top of them.

    After Tintagel Castle we traveled to Kynance Cove, which was an absolutely beautiful swimming beach, hemmed in by jagged rock formations. We were in a bit of a time crunch, so rather than go to the beach we hiked over the top of the beach, giving excellent views of the rock formations and the very blue water.

    After Kynance Cove we drove through the Cornwall Peninsula, arriving at St Erth where we caught the train to St. Ives. This was a super cute coastal town, filled with beaches and home of a spectacular harbor. The town was packed with tourists, and with good reason. There were a ton of cute local shops, and we bought both Cornish fudge and flapjacks(not pancakes in the US, but essentially granola bars filled with fruit or desserts). We enjoyed our snacks while walking and exploring, and then stopped at a fish and chips spot for dinner right on the harbor. The fish and chips were excellent, and we really enjoyed having it with curry and tartar sauces, which are the local preferred dips.

    After dinner we headed back to our lodging, with a big travel and exploration day tomorrow!    Read more
