Reykjavík and Blue Lagoon

Today we further explored Reykjavík, and visited the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa.

We started our day with coffee at a local cafe, and then walked through downtown Reykjavík again. We settled on a local soup in bread bowl spot for lunch, and it was delicious! After lunch we walked back to the massive church in downtown, and checked out the inside, which had an amazing organ. We opted to climb to the top of the church tower, where we got panoramic views of the city. A big storm was starting, so rain and a bit of snow were blowing through the open windows at the top which was pretty incredible.

After the church tower we headed back to our hotel to grab our car, and then drove to…. COSTCO! We thought it would be cool to see what Costco was like in Iceland, and wanted cheap gas. The food there was pretty interesting, as there were all sorts of items we don’t see in Costco back home. For example there was an entire section for Icelandic candy, sushi, and gelato. We opted to eat at the food court as it was the lowest pricing we’d seen in Iceland, and enjoyed a hotdog and mango smoothie, as well as gelato which they sold from the food court as well!

After Costco we headed to our new hotel, and after unpacking visited the Blue Lagoon. This was another geothermal spa, however what is unique about Blue Lagoon is that the waters are natural geothermal waters and filled with silica, which reflects the sun in such a way as to make them a brilliant blue. We enjoyed smoothies in the water, and checked out their multiple saunas and steam rooms. Chelsea also got a face mask with silica!

After the baths we called it a night, as tomorrow we fly to the Faroe Islands!Read more
