• Trolltunga hike

    September 19, 2025 in Norway ⋅ 🌧 48 °F

Today we hiked to one of Norway’s most scenic hiking points Trolltunga by via ferrata.

We started our day bright and early with a 6am wake up to get over to the base of the Trolltunga hike and meet our guide. We took a quad to the base of a boulder scramble, and after we’d traversed 2 miles or so we reached the base of the via ferrata, and then put on our gear. A via ferrata, or “iron path" in Italian, is a protected climbing route found typically in the Alps. A via ferrata uses steel fixtures and cables to protect and assist a climber, and essentially for this Trolltunga hike the via ferrata was a massive ladder going up the side of the mountain made of steel rungs. We wore harnesses that enabled us to clip onto cables running along said ladder, that would catch us in the event of a fall.

Once we had our gear on, we started the climb. Chelsea had been a bit nervous for this one as she doesn’t like heights, but once she was on the mountain she excelled at the climb and didn’t even notice the heights! The climb was a very long route to start, followed by a massive plateau and then two smaller routes.

Once we reached the top of the mountain we hiked a few more miles to Trolltunga, or “troll’s tongue” which is an awesome rock formation that looks like a tongue sticking off the mountainside and over the water. We took a ton of pictures here, as the views were incredible.

After we finished our pictures it actually started pouring rain, so we had beyond perfect timing. As it was getting windy in addition to the rain, we hustled for the 6 mile return to the parking lot. In all the hike was 10 miles including the climb, and we were beat! We had a relaxing dinner at home and hit the hay.
