    Jabo - mountain village

    This tiny village was a short detour from the main road, but totally worth it with this stunning view. The cafés along the road all offer an unobstructed view while having a rest.

    Dieses kleine Dorf lag zwar etwas abseits der Route, aber es hat sich schon wegen der Aussicht total gelohnt, den kleinen Umweg gefahren zu sein. Die Cafés entlang der Straße boten alle einen offenen Ausblick auf die Landschaft, während man sich erholen konnte.Read more

    Pang Ma Pha viewpoint

    Pang Ma Pha - or Ban Luk Khao Lam - viewpoint is supposed to be one of the most spectacular on the loop. In my opinion, probably because of the weather, it didn't stand out. But it was worth a stop in any case.

    The city after which the loop is named is very quiet and unpretentious. I particularly love the different style of the temples with silvery & wooden decor giving a nice contrast to the gold.
    After another (approx.) 110 km with a lot of scenic stops on the way, I decided to stay here for the night.

    Die Stadt, nach welcher die Rundfahrt benannt ist, kommt relativ ruhig und aufdringlich daher. Mir gefällt besonders der etwas andere Stil der Tempel mit Holz und Silber, was einen schönen Kontrast zum Goldenen darstellt.
    Nach weiteren ca. 110 km mit einer ganzen Menge an Stopps auf dem Weg (wegen der tollen Aussicht), entschied ich mich, die Nacht hier zu verbringen.    Read more

    The - not quite - Mae Sarin Waterfall

    The first big stop on the way today was supposed to be one of the more important waterfalls in the area. What started with an interesting ride on a rather small but very scenic road, ended in disappointment: the waterfall was closed. Highlight? The little "gas station" in the middle of nowhere with an old lady hand-pumping the fuel.

    Der erste große Halt auf der heutigen Fahrt sollte einer der bedeutendsten Wasserfälle der Region sein. Was als interessante Motorradfahrt auf einer ziemlich kleinen aber landschaftlich außerordentlich schönen Straße begann, endete in einer kleinen Enttäuschung: Der Wasserfall war geschlossen.     Cats and dogs... but raining!

    Apparently today's highlight was getting drenched to the bones for 3+ hours. Riding became much slower as well, because I had to be more careful, so I didn't make any other of the planned stops. But the scenery was still amazing.

    Das absolute Highlight des Tages war heute wohl die mehr als drei Stunden dauernde Fahrt durch strömenden Regen, die mich bis auf die Knochen durchnässte. Da ich auch viel vorsichtiger fahren musste, war ich natürlich viel langsamer und musste die anderen geplanten Stopps ausfallen lassen. Aber die Landschaft blieb weiterhin atemberaubend.     Mae Chaem to the rescue

    There was a moment when I was questioning my choices, right after about two hours in the rain. I was wet, cold and starting to become exhausted. The rain wouldn't stop (like it normally does), so I just had to endure. But I decided to abandon my original plan and simply find a place to stay in the next suitable town: Mae Chaem, which was just another hour away. When I stopped outside the hotel, I had to wait a few minutes to let all the water trickle down, before entering. The receptionist noticed and chuckled.

    Es gab einen Moment, wo ich alles in Frage stellte, das war nach ca. zwei Stunden im Regen. Ich war komplett nass, durchgefroren und fühlte langsam auch die Erschöpfung kommen. Der Regen wollte auch nicht nachlassen (wie sonst immer), also musste ich irgendwie durchhalten. Aber ich verwarf meine ursprünglichen Pläne und suchte mir den nächstbesten Ort für die Nacht: Mae Chaem, der gerade mal eine weiter Stunde entfernt lag. Als ich am Hotel ankam, müsste ich erstmal fünf Minuten vor der Tür stehen und das Wasser aus den Sachen laufen lassen. Die Rezeptionistin bemerkte das und musste kichern.    Read more

    Doi Inthanon - Thailand's highest point

    Finding out in the morning that it was still raining led to the decision to put back on yesterday's half dried clothes, so I wouldn't waste clean ones - they would have been soaked after twenty minutes anyway. As hard as that was, it was nothing compared to the cold that waited for me on top of Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest mountain at 2,565 m. Shivering I managed to take a few pictures (there was zero visibility anyway) and I had a good morning coffee, as was the ritual.

    Weil es morgens immer noch regnete, beschloss ich, meine erst halb getrockneten Sachen vom Vortag wieder anzuziehen, den frische Klamotten wären nach zwanzig Minuten auch wieder durch gewesen. So schwer das auch fiel, es war nichts gegen die Kälte, die mich auf dem Doi Inthanon erwartete, dem mit 2.565 m höchsten Berg Thailands. Zitternd schoss ich ein paar Bilder (es war eh Null Sicht) und trank einen Guten-Morgen-Kaffee, wie es das Ritual war.    Read more

    Coming down from the mountain

    It's unbelievable what perspective does to you. The cold that had grown from uncomfortable at the start to unbearable on top of the mountain, now slowly subsided with every metre I descended. Though, objectively, it was probably colder here than on the road yesterday, it felt a lot warmer, because of the relief.

    Es ist unglaublich, wie unterschiedlich man Dinge empfinden kann. Die Kälte, die am Anfang unangenehm und später auf dem Berg eigentlich nicht mehr auszuhalten war, ließ mit jedem Meter, den ich bergab fuhr, nach. Obwohl es hier objektiv sicher kälter war als auf der Fahrt gestern, fühlte es sich durch die Erleichterung viel wärmer an.    Read more

    Wachirathan Waterfall

    This was where I wanted to end my ride yesterday. Today I was equally wet, but with a night's rest in between and the freezing cold of Doi Inthanon, this place felt almost warm!

    Returned my motorbike...

    Back in Chiang Mai

    It's been a wild ride at times and in hindsight, I would have liked a day or two more on this "loop". I might do it again, but probably in the dry season, even if that means that there are many more tourists around.
    I gave back the motorbike on time and then walked a last time through town towards the train station.

    Es war ein teils wilder Ritt, und im Nachhinein würde ich mir wünschen, einen oder zwei Tage mehr auf dieser Runde gehabt zu haben. Ich würde es vielleicht wieder tun, aber wohl eher in der Trockenzeit, auch wenn es da wesentlich mehr Touristen gibt.
    Nachdem ich das Motorrad pünktlich abgegeben hatte, lief ich noch ein letztes Mal durch die Stadt in Richtung Bahnhof.    Read more

    I've never ridden the train in Thailand before and it's something I needed to try. Even though the comfortable classes (sleeper and 2nd class) were fully booked, I still wanted to do it, so I booked the 5 pm overnight train back to Bangkok in 3rd class for € 8,20 (seats, non-reclinable). Let's see how this works out...

    Ich bin noch nie in Thailand Zug gefahren und das ist etwas, was ich unbedingt mal probieren musste. Auch wenn die bequemen Klassen (Schlafwagen, 2. Klasse) alle ausgebucht waren, wollte ich es trotzdem wagen. Also buchte ich den 5-Uhr Nachtzug nach Bangkok in der 3. Klasse für umgerechnet € 8,20 (Sitze, nicht verstellbar).     3rd class to Bangkok

    It felt like a trip to the past, rather than back to the big city. The train - open windows, basic, straight seats, loud banging and rattling - reminded me of old times when travelling with speed and comfort wasn't so readily available. But I actually enjoyed the trip, although I obviously didn't sleep much.

    Es fühlte sich eher an wie eine Reise in die Vergangenheit als in die große Stadt. Der Zug - offene Fenster, einfache, gerade Sitze, laute Fahrgeräusche - erinnerte mich an alte Zeiten, als man noch nicht so selbstverständlich bequem und mit hoher Geschwindigkeit durch die Weltgeschichte reisen konnte. Aber ich habe die Reise sehr genossen, obwohl ich natürlich kaum geschlafen habe.    Read more

    Hello Bangkok (and goodbye)

    At 6 am I arrived safely in Bangkok, which also marks the end of this little "detour".
    Before I had to return to the reality of home, I was still able to do a couple of things: get a Mango Sticky Rice from Mae Varee, get a 150 Baht haircut, eat a couple of favourite meals and meet some former colleagues from POWIIS, Malaysia.

    Früh um 6 Uhr kam ich in Bangkok an und mein kleiner "Abstecher" ist damit auch beendet.
    Bevor ich wieder in die Alltagsrealität zurück musste, konnte ich aber noch ein paar schöne Dinge abhaken: Mango Sticky Reis von Mae Varee, ein Haarschnitt für 150 Baht (4 Euro), ein paar Lieblingsessen sowie ein Treffen mit früheren Kollegen aus der Zeit in POWIIS, Malaysia.    Read more
