      Sousse

      July 7 in Tunisia ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

      Jour 7 et 8

      Journées libres à Sousse.

      Jour 9

      March 19, 2020 in Tunisia ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

However this is the famous phrase of my favourite photographer, Henri Cartier Bresson,
We had our own one today.
      ..
After the most unpleasant experience in the mountains of Bargou, were we were chased away, and in the end, found refuge in the home of one of the locals who might felt sorry for us, I booked for the four of us, a AirB&B to take shelter and gave a "think it all over".
Yesterday we went into town and did some shopping, but much police and army on the roads, and people did not welcome you as foreigner. The full opposites of the days in Algeria.
I did not feel very comfortable. But I am always a bit .... worried.
So. I was the one who wanted to stay close to airports and ferry to get away as soon as possible.
The German government was organising flights back to Germany for their countrymen.
      The Netherlands are very quiet.
Anyway. It so difficult to leave the country because of the car. It's in my passport, and you need to get it sealed on a parking under customs law. In order to get it of your passport and you are free to leave.
This is a procedure that costs at least a full day.
Some we know are already waiting in this process for two days.
And now. We heard that the Tunisian air space will be closed for all flights.
And the last flight will be tomorrow, friday evening.
We are in Sousse. 13.00h. Tunis Airport or any Tunis Douane is 150km away. Tomorrow it's Friday. The holy day for Muslim...
      ..
Maarten en Janne went for it. They quickly loaded up their Landcruiser and drive up to the airport, which I think is the wrong place to be for the Douane, and I hope they drove straight to our friends on the camping in Nabeul who have done 90% of the procedure already.
But... that's something we mighty hear tonight.
      As you can read.
      The decisive moment.
We stayed. I don't believe in a God. And I know my Lieske. I think we are safe here. The whole world is a no go,.
We have everything we need and more, even Johans water kettle is finnaly of good use..;)
Just trapped in this country and have to wait until corona fades and the borders open again.
      We might return than home.
      ..
Or continue our journey, with a delay of at least 30 days.

      But that's...another
      Decisive moment.
      Love you all!

      Hamam

      July 14, 2023 in Tunisia ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

      Picking up the Pieces

      February 17 in Tunisia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

The weather had taken another turn for the worse and was now raining. I am trying to convince myself that maybe it was a good thing I missed my tour because of this. But with nothing planned, the day runs a serious risk of being a washout. And that's basically what happened. I had to spend the day trying to figure out how I might be able to see everything I wanted to before I return to Sousse in a couple of days.Read more

      Cloudy Sousse

      February 16 in Tunisia ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Today, I planned to spend a lot of time on the beach reading my book and organising my trip. Unfortunately, it was a very cloudy day, and spending it by the water wasn't particularly rewarding. Nonetheless, I still tried to make the most of it. I perhaps spent too much time relaxing, and by the time I went to organising the next phases of my trip, I was too late for my tour that I had planned to do. It was the best opportunity I had to explore the southern parts of the country. This was a big shame, and I then scrambled to find another way to see it all. But to no avail. Tomorrow's plans were now out the window.Read more

      Sousse

      March 4, 2023 in Tunisia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

We walked around in Sousse and also visited nearby beaches.

Sousse didn't impress me as a city itself but people were nice. My boyfriend went to a barber shop and got a new haircut and let his beard cut. The guy spoke perfectly German, he learned all from his clients. There was also a guy from Poland with who I had a conversation about Tunesia as he visited the country already several times.

We drunk some tea and left, walked around in the Souk and went to a shisha Cafe afterwards. We also ate the best couscous we had in Tunesia.

      Blue Doors, White Towels

      September 29, 2018 in Tunisia ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Starting the day with an immense breakfast, my group and I made our way to some hotels to look at. I think, we've covered 3 hotels that day. In between, we visited the Souk, an Arab kind of market in Sousse. Tunisian marketeers really want to sell you their things. They try to persuade you into their little shops, not only so that you would buy something. Even if you make it really clear, that you don't want to buy anything, they want you in their shop - because where other people are, more would come. Easy psychological trick. And it really was the case. I went into an empty gold shop with lots of necklaces, bracelets, rings, etc. Not two minutes after I started strolling around, three other women have entered the shop. I played my part as a trap for flies well, so the shop owner let me leave without disturbing me with false promises. The next stands were full of exotic spices. Our local tour guide explained us various spices and let us try them. I decided I need a very hot spice, called Harissa. It's like red chilli peppers, but with more taste. It's still my favourite kind of spice 5 years later.
After buying this, my wallet was hungry for more, and so it was no wonder that I became a victim of the psychological trap short after. I entered a clothing shop with lots of beautiful Arabic dresses and after falling in love with a midnight blue one, I had to at least try it on. Damn it, it fitted rather nice. So, I spent a bit of money for it (it was actually only €20, but in Tunisian Dinar it felt way more) and decided "No more spending today". It worked, as I could walk behind the other group members without spending any more money. I was rather pleased with my resistance when we ended our Souk tour with eating lunch at a restaurant that had quite a cool view over Sousse. After lunch, we looked at more hotels and beaches and also the marina of Port El Kantaoui, where there were yet again, lots of temptations - that I resisted successfully.

Sousse, missing the flight to Italy

      August 22, 2018 in Tunisia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

      Time to say goodbye.

A look at the "Grand Rouge", the camion which has been the family business for 30 years.

We are very organized, we think.
We leave at 10:00, the flight is at 15:00, plenty of time to vist Sousse (simple subtraction).
We head to Sousse and visit its port, the Hannibal ship (just a picture). Its wonderful Rībat (every single room and space), a quick look to the souk, a superquick look at the restaurant menu ...
The airport of Tunis is two hours from Sousse and we just didn't realise how LATE it was. The hot? The excitement? The watch?

      So?.....I missed the flight.
      Horror 😱

The guy at the check-in was very strict, although the airplane was still there, the take off was scheduled in half an hour he didn't let me and three more passengers to get on the plane.
      Gone.
No following flights, no seats for the following 20 DAYS. Tunisia crouled on me piece to piece. I wanted to go home, Walid needed to go home.

I spent the longest of the nights in a residence nearby with the heart in my throat. At 8 in the morning, without a sleep, I run to the airport and I didn't breath until an officer at the AirFrance ticket office told me there was a seat on a flight to Naples via Paris at 12:00.

I love Paris, actually. I find it romantic.

      Die Lizenz zum draußen

      October 9, 2020 in Tunisia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C
