      konstantinopel

      April 19 in Turkey ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

      istanbul

      December 28, 2023 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

that first evening, all i could manage was a shower, a short walk outside and a çaj tea with the hostel worker, then i fell right back into bed. i did however bump into mike (i probably didn't mention him earlier) from the hostel in thessaloniki, just on a random street in the middle of istanbul.

the next day, i moved to another hostel, which was a bit more pricey but way bigger and more spacious, located in the nightlife district taksim. i wanted some good company to celebrate new years with, so i figured it'd be worth it.

the next days consisted of eating cheap turkish food and exploring every corner of the city, while the nights were reserved for a pinch of partying and not so much sleep. i stayed there for a full week and was able to attend breakfast a grand total of two times.

i knew that i would be in istanbul for a while, so i got onto tinder and bumble again. among others, i met ipek, who turned out to be a fellow couchsurfer. she promptly invited me to stay with her for a couple of days, and so i did.

i had a bunch of new impressions i could talk about, but that would take ages, so here's the low down:

      - first time (except the us) where i experience things that are truly new to me, not just recycled european cities
      - istanbul has like 25 mil population, so it's an insanely big, lively, at times very chaotic city
      - everywhere you look, you see gigantic turkish flagpoles or huge illuminated mosques in the distance and you hear muezzins singing from the minarets all the time
      - super friendly people, but in a genuine way and not obnoxious at all
      - lots of stray cats, some are insanely big and people care for them well with food and shelter
      - no more 18yo 1 month europe travelers to be seen in the hostels like in italy / france
      - government and police are very keen on image and security (also, police drives ferraris and bentleys they confiscated in some big razzia and park them in the touristy areas)
      - 1 in 4 wears women wears a hijab, a couple even full niquab
      - there were no fireworks on new years eve, everybody just took to the streets and cheered

fantastic city, can only recommend 👏

      Day 52: Hair transplant ✅

      August 21 in Turkey ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

My arrival on monday in Istanbul was followed by the blood test and a few admissions about the process of the hair transplant at Clinicana.
From the start I felt in good hands. Everyone involved knew exactly what to do and what's next. You get every information you may need, which left me feeling very secure about what was coming up.

The next day was "hair transplant day".
      All was very nicely organized.
You get a shuttle to the clinic and from then on you are in the hands of real professionals.
Every step gets double checked and without your permission, the process won't continue. There is no rush. Fantastic.

The operation starts with anesthesia of the scalp. This step is by far the most unpleasant, but you are going to survive this, no worries.
After this you won't feel anything. You just let the nurses do their job, relax and let it happen.
It took them 9 hours to get everything done from start to finish.
Huge respect to all the specialized nurses, who stay focused and calm over the whole period of time.

Today the bandages got removed and the first hair wash applied. Same experience here like in the days before. They know what they are doing and I got provided with special aftercare products.

It was a great experience so far. Let's see, how the result looks in the future. Excited!

Huge shoutout to MediTravel and especially Christoph, who showed huge interest in what I do here and by supporting my journey.

      Taxi Taxi

      November 4, 2016 in Turkey ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Read more

Hagia Sophia Mosque and The Blue Mosque

      April 17, 2022 in Turkey ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Today we visited the Hagia Sophia Mosque and The Blue Mosque. On the inside of the Hagia Sophia mosque it was beautiful and we saw some people praying as it is a functioning religious site. We had to take our shoes off before we entered but there was comfortable green carpet all over. The painting of the roof and walls and the at architecture was amazing and we saw a black cat inside. Before we went in we walked through a garden with tulips and beautiful trees. There where a couple venders of food and scarfs and at the entre ce there where some people trying to get us to buy tours. It was nice to visit and I would do it again if there wasn’t so many people. It started raining shortly after we left.

The Blue Mosque was under construction so we couldn’t do much but we could hear and see some people praying behind gates.

After we grabbed a bite to eat as a restaurant called The Pudding Shop. We had some donner kebab and it was ok. Not the best but it was nice. We then grabbed some baklava and headed home. It was a nice day out and It was enjoyable.
