      Cars, castles and Casswell-Beckers

      25. lokakuuta, Englanti ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Sali Mali and Le Petit Prince, signing in.

Today I awoke armed with the knowledge that I had to pack my bags, have a shower, make the complicated choice of which clothes of Izzy’s I could not bring, and write two full blogs.

      This was almost a success.

Indeed, bags were packed, showers were had, clothes choices were made, but the two full blogs were not written.

One of them was posted in the evening of this day, and the second was written in the night of this day, but was only posted on the morning of the next blog.

Which is why it is the morning of the next blog, and I am only just now writing the blog for yesterday, proving once again that I come from the Procrasti-Nation.

But no matter! I shall do my best to give a truthful recap of the day.

So, as previously mentioned, bags were packed and I had a shower, and then we had some breakfast. Once again, Andrea and I enjoyed delicious boiled eggs. However, Terry had already eaten breakfast, and so we couldn’t do the egg trick, which felt… unnatural.

Oh, it should be mentioned that while we packed in the cabin, I introduced Andrea to the wonderful world of folklore: the long pond studio sessions. I don’t think she was a fan.

But once bags were fully packed and breakfast was enjoyed, we were off (featuring a ten minute connection of a phone to bluetooth and a mad dash to retrieve a charger from a cabin), and the drive began in the best way: with Taylor Swift.

I played some 1989 per Andrea’s request, but Terry said that he liked willow and so we played evermore, of which Granny and Terry were fans.

This took us 1h and 9 minutes, and when it was done, Granny asked us to play something entirely different but still Taylor.

      So we played reputation.

It was a weird time, since the music did not seem to be Granny and Terry’s style. But ultimately it was fun, and we talked about joe vs travis and also about tom hiddleston.

It was fun! But then we arrived at Castell Coch (I will hear no jokes from dad) and strolled around, after a brief snack for lunch of course.

The castle was red and very randomly organised, but ultimately very cool because of the art on the walls and tiny beds and stuff.

I also pretended to fall out a window in a series of photos haha I am funny.

And then we had a hot chocolate in the cafe, and we were off again!!

Granny played her boppin tunes this time, with intervals of her telling stories about the songs. Andrea and I wrote our blogs, trying to catch up our lateness, but failing miserably, since we arrived at AliDexDann’s house really quickly.

Upon our arrival, we chilled in the kitchen and got turned into crqzy art installations by Dex. This involved putting holes in our clothes with toothpicks.

Andrea and I then made a delicious chopped salad to help Ali and Dann, and we all called each other Chef which was very fun.

Dex then convinced me to take part in an outdoor dance party with her, which quickly turned into an outdoor dance show, which I realised we would have to show to everyone.

I perhaps lost all my self respect on that night.

But happily we went in for some delicious dinner first, the veggie lasagne was exemplary, in fact if someone asked for an example of veggie lasagne, i would point you Dann and Ali’s way. The garlic bread was also delicious, and the salad was perhaps ok.

After dinner we did indeed have to show the dance routine, Andrea has videos which i hope never see the light of day, but there is a 90 percent chance that I will end up editing them into our vlog, so that’s on me.

Afterwards, Granny and Terry left, Dexie went to bed and Dann, Andrea and I partook in a game of citadels. I kept losing (mainly due to my desire to remain the King), and then I had to read a story to Dex, who in return told me a story, and then tried to bite me again.

A recurring theme, it would seem.

Upon my return downstairs, another game was played and Dann declared that some tavern music was needed. And so he searched far and wide, and finally settled on some medieval music.

“Who is this?” I asked. Dann raised an eyebrow, and then I heard the notes to one Anti-Heroe by Taylore Swifte, a well known medieval minstrel.

We then bopped out further to Medieval Swift, and I lost some more. We also ate some blueberry vegan magnums, I was uncertain at first, but soon became a fan.

After the game was over, Andrea and I retired for the night and I wrote my blog for yesterday, while she slept.

      And that was it!

Honorary mention today is for my bestie Andrea, who puts up with my annoyance early in the morning and late at night and also through the day hehe, like when I speak my blog aloud for it to be recorded while she is trying to sleep. Sorry!

Let’s do the Time Warp again!

      19. lokakuuta, Englanti ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Sali Mali and Le Petit Prince, signing in.
So today, we awoke in Bristol and were very surprised to see the sun shining! But it was good news since we planned to be very “american hallmark autumn movie” to quote my sisters.

      But first of all, breakfast!

Breakfast was some pretty tasty waffles, to which we added maple syrup, whipped cream, and some fruit. It is worth noting that the fruit was very classy since it was in a bowl, and that we were not staying with heathens.

I also had a very cool sausage dog mug and noticed a “french dog” that had a beret but it was ultimately concluded that this sounded like a slur.

During this breakfast we listened to some interesting music, on brand for Dann, including the “Dramatic Song” and the “weasel riding on a snake”. It was great. Dann also read some of his best reviews that he’s left.

But after that we went and dressed up in our witchiest clothes which for me was Lily’s skirt (sorry that this is how you had to find out Lil), and headed off to the pumpkin patch! We picked some cool pumpkins, I am a classic girl in a classic world so I picked a classic pumpkin, Andrea is more of an artsy lad and so she has a green and orange one. Dann, Ali and Dex picked out a massive variety and i thought briefly that the pumpkin picking would never end. But alas, it did, and we roasted some marshmallows (for the first time in Andrea’s life), and I got some marshmallow on my fluffy hat 😔. And then we drove off into the sunset with a boot full of about 10 pumpkins.

Wait no, we didn’t, because Dex wanted to play in the straw play area. She engaged in a fearsome battle with another kid, but Andrea and I headed off to Cluckingham Palace. And thennn we left.

Upon arrival at home, we had some leftover pizza and sandwiches which were tres yummy, and then played a fun game of “A Gift For Princess Luna” which was created by Dann and Dex and I was shook by the complexities of this home made game, and was brought back to my youth, and the creation of the Lions of Palermo the game.

But Ali announced that it was time to go to see the Rocky Horror Show! We drove there and then had to queue for some time but it was fast moving do it was cool, and then we were in!

The show itself was bopping. Fun tunes, great singers, and Jason Donovan was in it which was cool. We bopped out, especially to Time Warp, and though some things were not understood, it was altogether a good time.

We then had a tour around Bath by exemplary tour guide Ali, who used to live there, and we saw a cool cathedral, a bopping bookshop, and a baddie bridge. It was a very chill and calm place.

Dann, who had had dinner with Dex, came to pick us up, and we drove home rather tired. Dann then made an exemplary pasta, and Andrea and I called our parents which was fun. Then the two of us, perhaps delirious on tiredness, got the giggles and just chuckled at everything, with funny jokes about synchronisation, burping, positivity, and knocking people out with a glass.

Reading it now, I think you had to be there.

But then we went to bed because we were well tired, and we organised our bags so as to be ready the next day, and Mouse was in our room so we hing out with that cool cat for a minute.

Then, we completed the mastermind (me) and watched a series (andrea) before turning out the lights and going straight to sleep.

So there is the blog, not very interesting since I am writing this the next day and so my memory is a bit skewed perhaps.

Honorary mention today goes to Dex’s excellent pumpkin-picking skills, apparently the trick is to talk to them about halloween. You heard it here first, folks!

Sali Mali and Le Petit Prince on tour!

      18. lokakuuta, Englanti ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

And so begins my latest trek. My newest travel. My most recent- I’m out of words beginning with a T. Indeed, Sali Mali (me) and Le Petit Prince (Andrea) are on tour!

I just realised that tour begins with T.

      Oh well!!

I begin composing as I sit in a (decidedly swaggy) car. Our two hour drive bad just begun when mum asked me if I had written the blog yet. Of course, I immediately apologised profusely for this slow work of mine- i mean three minutes in and i hadn’t started, how could I! And snapped to.

So after some hard thinking, dad came up with some bopping names for this blog, such as Pays de Gal Pals or Somebody Call Catherine Zeta Jones. But I needed something that stood out and yet blended in seamlessly with Somebody Call John Travolta!! And so, Sali Mali and Le Petit Prince On Tour! was born. However the name was too long for FindPenguins and so the tour was relegated to the description.

And since it is Sali Mali and Le Petit Prince, of course I will be writing in English and Andrea will be writing hers in French. So if you don’t understand what our blog is on about, never fear, you’re not having a stroke you’re just reading in the wrong language.

But what has happened so far? Well the twins waved hilariously from the door as we left, and I packed only this morning since I am a proud member of the Procrasti-Nation but it was cool because no one stressed, and mum reversed out of the driveway in an *admirable* fashion.

Now, dear friends it is much later indeed it is 11 at night (in english time) and i have much more to tell you.

So first of all Andrea and I sang 5sos songs into pen microphones for the entire two hour drive which was bopping and good fun.

When we arrived at the airport mum and dad accompanied us as far as they could but we had to split up before entering security. This was a sad time but Dad was very funny and so it was actually much of an average time. And then we were off and through security and the guy in security actually laughed at me because i took off my watch he was like “haha why are you taking off your watch fool” and i was like “uhhh because I always have to?” And he didn’t answer so i left it on and went to help my friend Andrea who had been split up from me and she had the bag with all the liquid and electronics haha.

But all was well and we made it through and then purchased some sandwiches for lunch and then Andrea called her mum and then we went to our gate!

But we had a problem with our passports since we are minors leaving France unaccompanied and the bro was like “where is your attestation” and Andrea was like “uhhhhh” and so she had to call her mum so she could confirm that her kid could leave the country and i was like, “do I?” And the guy was like “well you have a british passport and you live in the uk right?” And so I didn’t want to make life complicated for myself so I was like “haha yeah obviously”.

But upon a call to mum later it was revealed that this was a terrible mistake on my part since they stamped my passport and they might not let me back into the country in ten days.

      Oh well!

But it was during this call that we (as unseasoned travellers) thought that the guy not stamping Andrea’s passport was a problem so Andrea went back but it was actually not a problem.

Beeteebubbleyous if my writing is terrible it’s because i am well tired. Like exhaustion.

Anyway we were among the first in the queue but it was the wrong queue and so we were supposed to go miles into the back of the other queue but some nice ladies let us go in front so thanks to them! However they were also in the wrong queue haha. They had to switch too.

But then another mini problem as the security people were like “um this girl’s bag is suspiciously big” so Andrea had to go back and check her bag size and it was good and then she came back and she came through but them they were like “uh go do it again” so she did. And spoiler alert it was still good.

But then we made it to the plane boarding part and said hello to the plane and got on the plane and then we were off! And it was great fun since Andrea has never been in a plane before. And then we watched Narnia which really slays and i realised they were kinda hard on Edmund.

But anyway once we landed it was smooth sailing, the Brits were all super polite and helpful so living up to those stereotypes!

And then we waited a small while for Dann and Dex who came and picked us up and the signs with our names were awesome it was on the whole a bop. But to get from the airport to the car it was like a maze and it was like a mile away and so we got our steps up! And then finallyyyy we were in the car and let me tell you twas freaky being on the wrong side. However some bopping tunes were played including Dad’s favourite Taylor Swift song. Furthermore (my english teacher would be happy) we had some cool conversations that seemed to keep coming back to werewolves and vampires (courtesy of Dex) and Andrea was pretty quiet since tis not easy to stay with unknown people who speak an unknown language so she was a little shy, but overall twas a fun and chill time.

And indeed I said a phrase I never thought I would say, being “I really need to swing from that donkey” since i learned the old english myth of the cartwheel donkey.

Upon arrival Ali gave us some absolutely delicious biscuits that were just amazing and we immediately got an extensive tour of the house from Dex, which ended in the front room where we played a game of her and Dann’s invention, called “journey to Unicorn Land” i think, and I won so really it is a good game.

And then pizza arrived and we ate that and watched Monster High and it was really weird because the characters have been changed (personality, design, accents, even pronouns!). To clarify: Cleo is no longer mean, the characters all look similar and lacking in the detail department, Draculaura is just American now and Frankie goes by they/them.

I was absolutely shook. Also the messaging was crazy i mean seriously the whole episode was saying “don’t keep things to yourself just go to therapy!” I feel like there were never these undertones when i was a youngling but maybe i was just oblivious 🤷‍♀️.

And after that Dex went to bed and i yacked with Ali for a bit, but then U had to read to Dex so i did, but Dex was not tired and declared a “gobbling competition” and then bit me.

      So that was fun!

Anyway, we went back down and watched an episode of a series that got brought up in the car and then we watched this game show that was just crazy and might have melted my brain a little bit.

So after that Andrea and I went to bed but then I saw that Taylor Swift posted something and it was weirdly suspicious and I was like “hmm maybe I’ll stay awake till the Eras Tour” so i wrote this to keep me busy but sadly there is nary a chance that we will still be awake in 40 minutes so i guess i’ll find our tomorrow.

Anyways lads i am exhausted and this is too much for my tired head so i’m gonna go to sleep.

Honorary mention today goes to the curly wurly that Dann gave me and it was delicious and then Andrea (the crazy lady) didn’t like hers so gave me the rest. That was great.

      Day 1

      18. lokakuuta, Englanti ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

      Day 2

      19. lokakuuta, Englanti ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

      Chew Magna Day 2

      21. toukokuuta, Englanti ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Omigawd, what an incredibly fruitful day!! After breakfast, I walked west along High Street to see if I could recognize any building names from my research travels. I did see a few, but I'll have to wait til I get home to verify.
I came to the intersection with Chew Lane, the road that leads to Westend Cottages, that great great great grandfather John Atheal owned. The 1841 census found Charles living here with his parents, John Atheal and Sarah, and young cousin Elizabeth. I had a date to meet the church warden at Stowey at 2:30 this afternoon, which would leave me with enough time to walk back to the inn, jump in the rental car and drive down for a visit.
I had found these cottages on an 1840ish ordinance map. However, current maps showed it in the same place, but it was labeled Chew House, and there was another smaller building behind it. I knew that the smaller one was an AirB&B rental, and I had tried contacting the owner but didn't get a response. So I thought, what the heck!
I went back for the car and drove south, finding the laneway or driveway (was this private property?) easily. I drove in and headed towards the first building, and as I got closer, there was a man standing near a driving mower in dusty old clothes, and I assumed he was the gardener. He watched me approach warily, so I started getting my 'lost' story in mind. I lowered the window and called out something like "Hello. My name is Beverley, and I think my ancestors used to own this property a long time ago. The name was Chiswell."
Immediately, recognition dawned in his eyes, and I told him some more of the details. He told me that he was aware that Chiswell's did own it once upon a time and told me to go park over there and I'll show you around!!
His name is Clive, and he took me inside to meet his wife, Margaret. I showed them the descendancy chart I had put together, and he told me that when they bought the property in 1977 from a fellow named Albert Weaver, the original Westend Cottage building was in derelict condition. He said that one of the documents he received was a copy of a Chiswell will!!
Clive ended up restoring the building, adding rooms on the west side, and renamed it Chew House. Another mystery solved. He showed me around the house and said that he had converted it from 4 attached cottages to a single home. He carefully pointed out the original rooms of each cottage, which consisted of a single large room on the Main floor with a large fireplace that would have served as kitchen and living room, and the second floor that was a smaller footprint which would have been where they slept.
Then he climbed up into the Attic to retrieve a framed tribute to the upgrades he made that included a photo of the original building in its dilapidated state. In the meantime, he sent Margaret down to the safe to find the purchase documents from all those years ago. They weren't able to find the will, but he was happy for me to take pictures of the sale documents with Weaver.
In all, I was there for probably 45 minutes. I think they were as happy as me for this encounter. I'm so glad I made the trip there!
This has been another rather long post, so I'll share details of my trip to Stowey in my post tomorrow.
Fun fact: In the retail environment, eggs are not kept in refrigerated conditions!

      Chew Magna Day 1

      20. toukokuuta, Englanti ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Finally, my first restful sleep of the trip so far! Woke up around 8ish, and after a shower, I went downstairs for breakfast. I'm afraid it's not likely I'll try blood pudding. They did have a nice Eggs Benedict. I sat in the front window of the pub and watched all the street activity going on.
Afterward, I walked north of South Parade and made my way to Silver Street. My great great great grandfather, John Atheal (father of Charles), must have been fairly wealthy as he owned a number of properties in The Village, including one on Silver Street that was described as 'houses and gardens' and was perched at the north side of the graveyard at St. Andrew's parish church. He lived in one of these houses with his son, John. There is only one house remaining, but I'm not sure it's his former abode.
I carried on up the road past the Church Hall, crossed a stone bridge over the River Chew, and found a quiet spot to contemplate my surroundings. The sun was shining brightly down on me and the quiet sounds of the birds, insects, and rippling water was very soothing.
I wandered back down to the church and began looking at the tombstone inscriptions, looking for Chiswell's. It wasn't long before I found Thomas (Charles' younger brother) and his wife, Sarah, in what I thought was a prominent location on the east side of the church by the footpath!
The grass was rather long (the Rector had informed me that it hadn't been cut yet), and it made for an unsteady traverse as I occasionally stumbled on a rock or brick that wasn't visible. I had planned to return in the afternoon when I was to meet the Rector, so I didn't search much longer.
I returned to the inn to rest for a bit and had a light snack. I set out again around 2:30 to explore more of the graveyard prior to my 3:30 meeting with Reverend Richard Greatrex. To my delight, there were a couple of gardeners with weed whackers working away on the 10-inch high grass.
I wandered around to the north area, checking the areas that had been trimmed. It wasn't long before I came upon the stone for John Atheal (Charles' eldest brother) and his wife, Elizabeth. Photos of both stones for John and Thomas can be found online on Find A Grave.
It was great meeting Richard. He had a couple of really old volumes of Chew Magna history, I shared the limited printed material I brought with me regarding my Chiswell research, and we had a good chat. He showed me around the building, making sure to point out the more interesting things. We parted with the agreement that I would share my findings with him.
Now I'm lazy again after a big plate of fish and chips. I hope to sleep well again tonight and look forward to tomorrow's adventures.
Fun fact: there's a restored headstone of a fellow who was murdered in the early 19th century. Picture included!

      Chew Magna Day 3

      22. toukokuuta, Englanti ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

      It was a rainy day . . .
Not sure if I'm going to venture out to the Stanton Drew Circles and Cove today. The rain is forecast to continue all day, so I'll likely go tomorrow.
Yesterday, following my visit to Westend Cottages, I drove south to meet Jill Broadhead (church warden) and her husband Graham at St. Nicholas and the Blessed Virgin Mary church in Stowey. The church is very small and was built in the 13th century. No Chiswell's were found in the graveyard. However, I was informed that over time, as decaying occurs, new graves are placed on top of old. Only the wealthy could afford a grave marker all those years ago.
Afterward we went to their nearby home for cake and a cup of tea. I shared my descendancy chart with Jill, and she, in turn, had some information for me regarding the Vicar James Chiswell, Rector of Stowey, from 1661 to 1709. I'm pursuing how he may be part of our ancestry.
Before I returned to Chew Magna, we took a walk around their beautiful English garden - 1.5 acres of lovely plants and trees, some from as far away as Australia! Very nice couple. So glad I contacted her.
This afternoon, I just wandered around the village, taking in the sights. The rain had stopped earlier this afternoon, but now I'm sitting in the front window of the pub sipping on my lemon iced tea, and I see it's drizzling again. It is England, after all.
Not so Fun Fact: this morning, in my room, I accidentally tipped my coffee cup over, and the hot liquid spilled all down my right leg and onto the floor.

Mells St Andrews church & leaving Frome

      15. heinäkuuta 2023, Englanti ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Fighting the 40 mile an hour wind I determined to make it to Mells St Andrews church. I had set off around 3pm reckoning it would take me a couple of hours each way ...I didn't reckon on the weather turning or getting lost!! Again!! I will learn to check the roads thoroughly....that's what this Camino is teaching me. Another lesson.. plan. Navigate for plain sailing...

I was so lucky to ask a gentleman, one, if I was on the right road and two how much further I had to go. He was just about to mow his lawn, putting his mowing shoes on!! He told me it was still quite a distance, maybe tw9 miles to go. Then getting up on his feet, yelled "wait there I'll be back in a moment" ...

He was a thirty something year old wearing jogging pants and shirts, clean cut hair, and as I stood there thinking about carrying on, he came rushing back "hop in my car I'll take you there!" I was in two minds thinking about beholding to someone again, wanting to walk, but also wanting to get there before the church closed!

It was now after 5 o'Clock and he had calculated the time I had and the distance...as we drove down the road, round one corner then another, I was dismayed in that I had gotten myself lost yet again. And I would never have made it before 6pm. I thanked the young man profusely, he shaking his head "it's just what I do!" and off he went ....

I enjoyed my time at the church especially as there was a choir in rehearsal I will post a video in my next footprint as not enough room here. Apparently, Seigfried Sassoon is buried here, and I missed his grave...saw it but couldn't read the inscription. He was an amazing poet and wrote against war in general while serving in the first WW.

I sat for a while enjoying the ambiance in the church and the singing before quietly making my way home again. It was about 6.30 and as I left the rain started pouring down. Thankfully the wind had settled down some and I met a couple who were lovely and told of their sojourn to New Zealand some years ago. They had met the owner of the Todd car company and invited to his home in Taupo amazed at the magnificence of the home overlooking the lake. The gentleman pointed me in the direction of the river walk back to Frome, so excited for that off I went.

I was a little nervous as his wife had said she wouldn't point anyone in that direction "not past the old iron works" said she. Well undeterred by her revelations, onward I ploughed through the rain, although quite humid as well. After walking for some way I began to look for signs back to Frome but unfortunately if there had been any signs they were all missing. Blindly I followed the instructions of the gentleman "to follow the river", good advice but when it came to paths crossing each other and forking along the way, somehow I got lost. I ended up seemingly miles away from my destination. I had walked for two hours by now feet soaking wet, mud puddles avoided where I could but in the end it didn't make any difference.

As the evening wore on I did begin to worry then of a sudden I was in a clearing and at the back of a quarry?? the gates opened into the quarry yard and through I went. There was a pub on the grounds, although closed, it had a telephone number to call, so I called and was told by the woman on the other end that there was no easy way as the road is very busy and not safe for walking on. However if I had no other choice she told me how to get to the road...

Off I went once more, and yes once on the road there was a steep climb. At the top of the climb there were a couple of houses so I decided to ask if I was on the right road to Frome. Knocking on one door a gentleman appeared in the next property to tell me that the people were out. I told him I only wanted directions so he said "where are you going to my love?" He in white shorts, white gutties and no shirt sporting a very deep tan responded to me. Directions given, off I went thanking him for his kindness.

Not 100 yards up the road and a white very flash car pulled up beside me, "I will give you a lift, you just have to tell me where you're going" tanned gentleman now with shirt on ... I was absolutely overwhelmed with gratitude and of course accepted immediately. The car was his wife's car as his was put away in the garage, he had gone in and spoken to his wife about me. A lovely guy who had just come home from a holiday in Spain, of course. He and his wife looking to move there. I am amazed, delighted and so very grateful for all the kindnesses shown on this journey. Blessed!
