      Walk the Norfolk Coast Path

      July 25, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

(siehe Bilder von Nayra) … tolle Abendstimmung!!Read more

      Blakenely Beach, the Day After.

      August 14, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Well there’s more to the Riviera of Norfolk than we thought.

      There is swimming water.
      There is also car drowning.
We think all vehicles survived the tide. A fellow turned up and sheepishly moved his Audi, by reversing even further into the water.
Was very confident of his 4 wheel drive?

      Blakeney Town Beach

      August 13, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

      So what’s Blakeney?
Well it isn’t the Riviera of Norfolk.
No ocean, that appears to be a couple of K away.
There’s a winding mud flat to the sea where local and imported English children go crabbing with nets or slosh around in the mud. Forget the days of going home with sand, we are talking mud, mud, mud.
Full of people renting cottages, God alone knows what they do after crabbing.
Sit by your car and read the paper or line up for ice cream is the answer.

Is is however a great town.

      The White Horse Hotel, Blakeney

      August 13, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Rain, sun, rain, quite a number of very narrow roads and we are on the coast of Norfolk.
The street to the hotel is as wide as a driveway.
Filled with tourists and children who as they sit in the gutter with their legs out block the street.
      Rather pleased to arrive.
It appears that the GPS has managed to bring us down the most inconvenient route but certainly the mos at adrenaline filled.
The hotel ha sits own car park.
Why is this important because the public car park at the bottom of the hill will be under water tonight.
We are not sure if all the gambolling English are aware of this.
      More news of submergences tomorrow.

      Weybourne to Blakeney

      May 18, 2021 in England ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Weybourne Hope is a two-mile stretch of land between Weybourne and Cley and was regarded as particularly vulnerable to invasion from the sea due to the deep inshore water that would allow ships to unload troops and stores here in the event of an invasion; for this reason a military camp was established here. This is now the site of the privately owned Muckleborough Collection, a military museum and we see many pillboxes and some guns as we take the coastal path around the outside edge.

We walk along the edge of the Salthouse Marshes, a popular bird-watching site, and espy the Parish Church of St Nicholas in the village of Salthouse itself. The beach becomes more sandy as we approach the Cley Marshes Nature Reserve at Cley Eye, and then turn south to Cley next the Sea; there are great views of the iconic Cley Windmill, a five storey tower mill that has now been converted to a guesthouse and licensed wedding ceremony venue. We cross the River Craven and head north on this side back up the coastline to skirt round the edges of Blakeney Eye and down to the coastal village of Blakeney and its welcoming Quay area.

      Tuesday and Wednesday

      September 8, 2020 in England ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Tuesday - Day at leisure to rest back as they say. Bit of sunshine filtering through so a day of reading until I persuade herself of the benefits of an afternoon stroll to West Runton beach, and a very nice beach it is too. Lovely sand and a few rock pools. Never seen so many dogs on this trip. People look at us strangely as we have no mutt on a lead. The smaller the caravan/motorhome the bigger and greater the amount of dogs within.
Wenesday - awake to full sunshine (at last) so off on the train to nearest Sheringham. Pleasant amble around a small market and through the town to the promenade. Stroll east and west until back is aggravated so retire to pub for embrocation in this case Adnam Ghost Ship at its finest! Skilfully avoid the many fish and chip shops only to be forced into an ice cream shop.🍦🍦 This seems to one of these holidays where we are doing bugger all apart from eating and drinking.🍺🍷 😎

      Bye West Runton, Hi Blakeney

      September 10, 2020 in England ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Moving day. Around 12 miles to be precise. So we thought we would visit Holt a picturesque small town on the way. Holt has small narrow streets and very few and small car parks. Muttley is a bit bulky. Not a match made in heaven. The first go at a car park in the centre, no space and entailed a bit of precision reversing so we could exit the car park and town. Second attempt at car park two.... err no. Exit town. Third attempt at supermarket car park no...... supermarket closed. Exit town. Sod Holt let's crack on! Wrong road out via satnag - narrow Norfolk roads so no turning till the next village. So back to Holt we went. We are nothing if not persistent, and took a run down a long road to try to street park.... nothing to accommodate our bulk. Returned back down the road and blimey right in the town a 1 hour restricted space was secured for our endeavour. I rewarded myself with a shopping spree in Adnams beer shop and herself secured a blouse in a posh shop. Nice town with great independent shops. Now parked up 1 mile from Blakeney with a sea view from our farm site no less. Blackberry and apple crumble tonight from the posh food shop in Holt. Lovely....Read more

      Blakeney by bike

      September 11, 2020 in England ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Bike day today to ease the walking with the dodgy back. Only a couple of miles down the road Blakeney is so like many places along this bit of the coast, with a lot of marshland and rivers seperating the village from the actual sea. Lots of crab catching here and boats go out for seal watching Lovely picturesque village with the coastal path just over a mile from the beach. So we content ourselves with a roundabout walk around the village. Back on the bikes and a ride along the coastal road to the neighbouring Cley next the Sea. This time a beach road is available so we pedal out to the pebbly beach. Cley is a one road village very narrow so we decide to pedal back to Blakeney for refreshments. Well what do you know a pub serving Ghost Ship.... lovely! Bit of shopping for provisions and back home. 10 mies in total so not bad. The sunset tonight was very colourful and sticking.Read more

      Wells next the Sea

      September 12, 2020 in England ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Nice sunny day so we are off via the bikes and the coast hopper bus to Wells. The bus driver does a fair impression of Lewis Hamilton along the narrow coast road splattering luxury 4x4 vehicles up against the flint walls in his wake. Wells is very nice with really only one main shopping street leading to the Quay and the river which links to the sea, again about a mile walk if you are inclined, and herselfs back is not. Noted in an estate agents window a beach hut on Wells distant beach can be had for the princely sum of £58,000! So we had a sedate saunter around the town and quay with cakes purchased from a very nice bakery, and the obligatory pint of Ghost Ship and then Lewis gets us back to Blakeney at speed.Read more

      Bern's Relections on Northern England

      August 13, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

After two weeks, my impressions of England.
The British are unfailingly polite and helpful except the two girls in the cafe in the rain, whose studied indifference would win awards.
The new way to make money is to open a tattoo shop, as having permanently painted skin is the new pastime of the 40 something women with skin that is beginning to sag.
Another business opportunity is to buy a “vaping” shop with all the accoutrements , as the smoking British {of which there are many} are all trying to give up and trying vaping.
It is perfectly normal to share the bar and the restaurant with people’s dogs.
Most English men (except David of course, who is Australian) need the queer eye team to help with dressing. Polo shirts are big, matched with Tracky Dacks and old runners.
The occasional National Trust volunteer love to let you know how much they know and you don’t.
Little snoring airport should be avoided although Pudding Norton is worth a visit.

      More impressions later
