    • Day 998

      Mosterton

      February 15, 2021 in England ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

This was a bleak week weather wise with dark skies, strong winds and buckets full of rain. We did manage to pick out some drier periods and managed to complete our next stage of the Liberty Trail. This took us from Wayford to Thorncombe via Winsham and Forde Abbey across fields and down quiet country lanes. The Abbey was shut to visitors and the path around the rear of the Abbey to the gardens under water due to all the rain. We followed the country lane up to Thorncombe, returning to Wayford via Maudlin Cross and some very soggy fields.Read more

    • Day 945

      Mosterton

      December 24, 2020 in England ⋅ ⛅ 4 °C

We contacted the owners of the cottage that we had booked into for winter to see if we could get access in early. Thankfully for us, due to the increased tier system measures, we were able to move in immediately so we made our way over on Christmas eve.
The cottage is part of a group of old barn buildings which have been converted to holiday cottages - we have a small cottage in a terrace which was lovely and cosy on our arrival. We spent the afternoon emptying the van into the cottage which will be our home for the winter months.
The cottage is surrounded by farming land - green fields for cattle and sheep, walking tracks abound. On Christmas day, waking up to sunshine, we went for a short walk across the fields towards South Perrott - returning by the Langmoor Trail track to Mosterton. It was very wet underfoot but the views across the countryside well worth the effort.
We enjoyed a full Christmas dinner - turkey, stuffing pigs in blankets and all - excellent.
On boxing day we wandered into the village to get the Saturday paper and enjoyed a peaceful day

    • Day 977

      Mosterton

      January 25, 2021 in England ⋅ ☀️ 3 °C

There are a number of national walking trails which pass through and around this area, not least the Monarchs Way, South West Coast Path, River Parrett Trail and the Liberty Trail. The Liberty Trail starts at Ham Hill in Somerset, just to the north of us, and crosses the countryside to finish at Lyme Regis in Dorset to the south and west of us. The trail follows the footsteps of people who, in 1685, walked to join the Protestant Monmouth rebellion. The entire trail is 28 miles, but as we will be doing it in both directions we will obviously be walking double that distance. We have broken it up into 5 or 6 sections, and are hoping we can complete the entire walk during our stay here.
Ham Hill stands proud above the surrounding landscape and is home to a war memorial and a quarry which supplied the stone to one of Alan's old clients (A very very large House in Weighbridge.)
A millenuim project adjacent the quarry completed a stone circle where the stones are aligned to the solar cycle. The views from the hill were far reaching across the landscape.
Coming off the hill we encountered more signs of Spring with a patch of snowdrops and emerging displays of daffodils.
We walked through to West Chinnock via some very wet footpaths, where K's boots were swamped by the mud, after which we plotted a return to Ham Hill using the dry country lanes. The villages in this part of South Somerset are all quite pretty. We enjoyed our walk under glorious winter sunshine.

    • Day 976

      Mosterton

      January 24, 2021 in England ⋅ ⛅ 4 °C

We awakened to find a film of snow across the landscape - not enough to make it magical but enough to settle in the fields. We completed one of our walks from the cottage, and it was a surprise to see the first signs of spring under the hedgerows where daffodils were beginning to emerge and bloom - all very nice in the partial snow scape.Read more

    • Day 970

      Mosterton

      January 18, 2021 in England ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

On Monday we travelled to Winchester for health related stuff and Tuesday the weather was bleak so we stayed inside. A helped K with cutting out bunting for decorations at Kirsty's wedding.
We managed to get out on Wednesday between weather fronts and competed a slightly shortened walk through Seaborough which cut out the muddiest part of one of our usual routes. We got back inside just as storm Kristoph began to pass through. The weather was quite wild for a while but by Thursday the morning all was calm.
We needed a minor stock up of fresh food and fruit so drove to Bridport to the supermarket taking in a jaunt to the nearby sea shore for a walk. We parked up next to Burton Beach just after high tide - the waves crashing into the shoreline were quite spectacular and the noise tremendous. We walked along the shingle beach as far as West Bexington where we turned inland hoping to find a less arduous walk back. We didn't fancy the main road though so after climbing out of W Bexington we returned to the coast path across the fields from Swyre. The views from the top of the hill were very pleasant - there is a lot of building work being done to houses on the hill side overlooking the coast line here.

    • Day 1,018

      Mosterton

      March 7, 2021 in England ⋅ ☀️ 4 °C

On Sunday we drove to Bridport and parked up near Lidl on the northern side of the town. We then walked to West Bay alongside the Brit Valley in the sunshine emerging by the promenade after passing through the large caravan site. There were no Cruise Liners to be seen in the bay, the first time for many months.
We walked over he hill behind us on Tuesday to Beaminster where we picked up a prescription then returned via the lane via Meerhay. Some brave soul was coming down the lane in a small Suzuki jeep (carrying L plates) which was very bold given the state of the track. We did not linger to see if he was able to get down the rather large step in the track that we had to negotiate on foot - he was already grounding the sump way on the rough track before he reached the crunch point.
On Thursday we picked a gap in the weather front to reprise the walk we completed on Karen's birthday. This time we did the route in reverse order. We waited in the car until a large shower passed through then set off up the very steep hill to the top of the Ridgeway. This time the views were clear from the top of the hill and we thought we might manage the whole walk without a soaking. There was a very strong cold wind blowing, one moment from the East then the next from the South West. As we approached Common Water Lane the sky grew very dark and we ended up having to shelter from a quite sharp hail and sleet shower behind a tree. It soon passed through, however, and we completed our walk in the dry, the wind blowing dampness out of our clothes.

    • Day 1,015

      Mosterton

      March 4, 2021 in England ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

After a couple of quiet days of rain we had the opportunity to finish the Liberty Trail Walk as although overcast and cloudy the forecast for today predicted no rainfall.
We drove to the car park at Coney's Castle and pitched off in the cloud southward towards Charmouth, crossing fields to Wootton Fitzpaine. From there we turned north westwards to follow a valley up to Stubbs Farm after which we turned southward to cross the A35 at Penn.
We found an old log to sit on in the woods at Hole Common where we had our lunch. Emerging from the woods it was a short walk up to Dragons Hill where we effectively completed the Liberty Trail. We returned to Coney's Castle via a more direct route from Dragons Hill, crossing the Lyme Regis Golf Course once again then pitching northward through Hogchester farm to emerge at Wootton Fitzpaine once again. All to be followed by the inevitable slog up the hill at the end of another ten mile day.
All in all, according to our pedometer, we covered a total of 87.7k (54,7m) and walked 118370 steps in completing the walk. It was a walk that took us through some beautiful countryside, as nice as any we have encountered, with rolling hills, and impressive ridge downs separating verdant green valleys. Along the way we were often accompanied by the sound of babbling brooks, birds singing their spring songs and the rattle of woodpeckers as they built their nests. We also witnessed the coming of Spring with emerging daffodils, crocus, snowdrops and primula in the hedge rows. A thoroughly good walk from start to finish.

    • Day 1,012

      Mosterton

      March 1, 2021 in England ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

We woke up to clear skies and decided that a walk by the seaside would be a good idea. We parked up in the NT car park at the top of Stonebarrow Lane, where the views along the coast were beautiful, and set off along the South West Coastal Path through Charmouth. We had intended to follow the low level path under Black Ven and The Spittles but soon found out that land falls had closed the low route. There was a very low Spring tide however so we walked along the beach through to Lyme Regis passing quite a few fossil hunters with their back packs and hammers at the ready. Lyme was looking beautiful in the sunshine and many people were enjoying a walk along the sea front. We wandered out to the end of the Cobb - most unusual to be the only ones there. As we came off the Cobb two bird watchers were getting excited about the presence of an Eider Duck in the harbour mouth - we were a bit too far away to pick it out - but they were very enthusiastic about the find. After that we walked through the town past Monmouth Street to cover a mile and a half of the Liberty Trail leading from the town passing beside the River Lim then we followed the route through fields housing sheep to Dragon Hill. We had proposed to return to Charmouth via the high level cliff top footpaths but these were also closed due to landfalls so we had to take the even higher route which crossed the Golf Course on the top of Dragon Hill. The long slog up Stonebarrow Lane to the top of the hill at the end of our 10 mile walk was a bit of a teaser.Read more

    • Day 1,000

      Mosterton

      February 17, 2021 in England ⋅ 🌧 9 °C

Day 1000 of our travels coincided with Karen's birthday. We celebrated by speaking to all of our family and enjoyed video calls with our lovely grand children. Bottle of Moet arrived from London in the post and some lovely chockies from Bristol. The girls in Brisbane sang Karen "Merry Christmas" although Summer did not join in. We devised a short walk from Beaminster to get us out into the country air. We enjoyed a great comedy moment as Karen chose the wrong side of the very muddy track on Common Water Lane, sinking into the sludge at the end. We returned via the Ridgeway in persistent rain and both needed warming showers on our return to base. On a good day the views would have been spectacular from the top of the ridgeway,
In the evening we had a delivery from the Indian restaurant in Beaminster. As nice as it was we both preferred the recipes we had been doing ourselves from the "Fresh India" book Kirsty sent us earlier in the year
On Thursday we walked five miles to Crewkerne for a visit to Lidl and Waitrose and were treated to a hailstorm on the way back.
We enjoyed the Moet over our weekly (Friday Fizz) lockdown zoom call with Jo and Syd.
