      4 May Conwy

      May 4 in Wales ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

We woke to another grey day but no rain. We got away from the camp and headed towards Conwy in North Wales in pretty heavy traffic. It was just over an hour to Conwy where good old Mr Google tried to take us through an arch in the old town walls which I thought was too narrow and met some new friends by backing up into an intersection while the traffic parted like the Red Sea behind me. After a couple more turns I came to another arch the same as the first and it turned out that if I pulled one mirror in and closed my eyes we could fit through. We then found a suitable park for the motorhome and walked back to the castle.

The castle was one of 4 built in North Wales by Edward I back in 1287 to station his troops and try to quell the pesky Welch rebels. It is a massive structure and was completed in 4 years. The cost of the castles almost bankrupted Edward. The castle has the original wall of over 1.3 km still intact which encompasses the beautiful town of Conwy. We walked the remains of the castle which is 5 storeys to the top of the towers. The stairs are the tightest and narrowest circular staircase you can find. Gaye did very well on them and by the time I got to the top of the tallest towers I had had the most cardio exercise in some time.

After leaving the castle we checked out the smallest house in the UK and had a wander around the town and both bought shoes for when we are on the River Cruise. We then ordered fish n chips and returned to the motorhome to eat them. I am still enjoying them 4 hours later (not).

We had originally planned to have 3 nights staying at a camp near Conwy and had planned 9 activities for the 3 days but the Holiday Weekend caught us out and with the nearest place we could stay on the outskirts of Liverpool it is too much to drive back and forth each day. We have been lucky enough that the camp we are staying in has had a cancellation for tomorrow night so we are able to stay on as I have been unable to find any accommodation in the Lake District for tomorrow night either.

On the way back to Liverpool we stopped at Tescos and restocked our supplies and then went for a drive along the foreshore at Llandudno which looked lovely but was overflowing with people and not a park to be seen anywhere. We got back to our camp where there is a pop up pizza place operating tonight so it looks like the option to top up on the carbs.

      Conwy Castle and town.

      October 20 in Wales ⋅ 🌧 57 °F

Conwy Castle (Welsh: Castell Conwy; Welsh pronunciation: [kastɛɬ 'kɔnwɨ̞]) is a fortification in Conwy, located in North Wales. It was built by Edward I, during his conquest of Wales, between 1283 and 1287. Constructed as part of a wider project to create the walled town of Conwy, the combined defences cost around £15,000, a massive sum for the period. Over the next few centuries, the castle played an important part in several wars. It withstood the siege of Madog ap Llywelyn in the winter of 1294–95, acted as a temporary haven for Richard II in 1399 and was held for several months by forces loyal to Owain Glyndŵr in 1401.

Once again a medieval castle, this looked to me to be even older than Edinburgh but I may be wrong. I would have loved to see these castles lit up at night. We mostly got a small snack-like meal at a cafe frequented by mostly locals, who were greeted by name as they entered. We also left money at the sweet shop, in return for quite a few sweets. My favorite here, Mint Rocks. (I love peppermint)

      Conwy

      June 3, 2023 in Wales ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Today we travelled on Irish Ferries from Dublin to Holyhead in Wales. Holyhead is on the island of Angelsey.

Our first stop was at the town with the longest name in world - all 58 letters of it. Check out the photos for the name and as for pronouncing it - good luck.

We then moved on to Conwy, on the River Conwy, which features a castle built by Edward I on the River Conwy in rhe late 1200's. It is in a strategic position on the coast with walls that are 4m thick.

      King Arthur in Topform

      May 16, 2023 in Wales ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

      Snowdownia story

      July 14 in Wales ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Read more

      Conwy

      April 22, 2023 in Wales

The rest of the town is also neat! The views of the quay are from the bridge next to the suspension one. The house featured is Plas Mawr, considered the best-preserved Elizabethan house in Britain. The white-timbered house with the stone base is the oldest non-castle related house in Conwy (from the 1400s). The red house really is the smallest house in Britain.Read more

      Conwy

      April 14 in Wales ⋅ ☁️ 48 °F

When England conquered Wales in 1283, Edward I had four castles built at strategic locations. Conwy Castle is one of the best preserved. Along with the others at Beaumaris, Caernarfon, and Harlech, it is designated a World Heritage site. The Welsh tried to force the English out of Conwy, but were defeated after a two month failed siege attempt. In 1401, Rhys ap Tudur and his brother Gwilym dressed as carpenters to gain access to the castle and successfully launched a surprise attack. They killed the watchmen and took control of the castle, while other Welsh rebels took the town. They held strong for three months before negotiating a surrender. In December 2023, Condé Nast selected Conwy Castle as the most stunning un Europe.Read more

      Fast and Strong

      September 13, 2023 in Wales ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

Conwy castle was built in just four years. This was an incredibly fast construction time for a castle of its size and complexity. It is believed that Edward I spared no expense in building the castle, and that he used the latest engineering techniques to ensure its strength.
Which was well worth it: although it was attacked several times during its history, it was never taken by force.

      Tiniest House

      September 13, 2023 in Wales ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Tiny homes are now very fashionable, but this tiny house on Conwy Quay was already built in the 16th century and is supposed to be the smallest house in GB.
It has a floor area of just 1.5 square meters and is about 6 feet wide by 10 feet high. It has only two rooms: a downstairs kitchen and an upstairs bedroom. There is no bathroom.
In 2021, the house was featured in an episode of the BBC TV show "Inside the World's Smallest Homes."
And in 2022, the house was given a new sofa by the sofa-in-a-box company Snug. The sofa is designed to fit into small spaces, and it is the first sofa to ever be placed in the house!

    • Day 9–12

      Manchester & Wales

      April 7 in Wales ⋅ 🌬 13 °C
