      Edinburgh Day 3

      16. august 2023, Skotland ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

The day began with free tea from the hostel lounge. After waking up a bit, me and Caimen went to grab brunch where we had some overpriced sandwiches. After that, we tried to go and watch a comedy show that was about being broke but we were so tired that we could barely stay awake. We decided that we just needed to keep moving. We walked to Dean Village which is a quaint little neighbourhood. On the way, we passed by a cool art market, and a church. After walking through the area, we headed back to the hostel where I finished off that spaghetti (that apparently lasted me forever!). Caimen headed off to the airport so we said a final goodbye. I then just decided to walk around the old town again to take a closer watch and/or listen to the many, many street performers and buskers that lined the streets. After a bit of that, I went to watch an improv musical which was hilarious to watch! So funny to think about how these people think of these things on the spot- in song as well! After, I met up with David where we watched a few more street performers together. We caught the sunset, and then I headed back to the hostel because he was going to watch the Military Tattoo (which, I still don’t know what it is). I stayed in the hostel to just chill (and catch up on writing my FindPenguin posts 😁). And then I caught the Military Tattoo coming out of the stadium, and parade around the church (which conveniently, was right outside of my hostel). After that, I went to go and catch the dreaded 8 hour bus back to London. Except this time, I had two seats!!!!!! So I felt a lot less crammed and slept a whole lot better this time around.Læs mere

A bit of history & a bit of hilarity

      11. august 2023, Skotland ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Edinburgh during the Fringe is super busy but that’s not to say you can’t find quite alleys and calmer spots. Especially if you get into the city before lunch from the lovely planted Aberdour Station, which we did since it was our only full day exploring the city. We started by sourcing a coffee and found the first Long Black we’d seen on a cafe menu - V’s favourite coffee so we were hopeful…it unfortunately, did not pass the taste test. We took our coffees (my cappuccinos are generally better) and walked up the Royal Mile to the Edinburgh Castle where the line was already setting up for the first 9am booking. I’d decided a few days before that it wasn’t worth booking the entrance after having already seen some beautiful castles & palaces and planning on seeing a few more in France etc. so I was happy to have picked this super busy one to miss. Regardless, the castle is so epic from around the outside and I think the view of it from New Town area is the most impressive where you can see how it’s towering over the city, latched on the edge of the cliff. We wandered back through the Old Town past the Writer’s Museum, reading some quotes of poets (Vikum had been reciting the freedom speech from Braveheart so we of course had to get a photo with “Fredome is a noble thing” quote). As suggested on the local tour audio guides, we listened to the day prior we decided to head to the free National Museum of Scotland…and can I tell you. This is the coolest museum that ever museum’ed. I can not believe it is free, I think I could go back 100 times. Here we went through the levels of the ‘Scotland through time’ sections plus a scattering from the rest of the building before making our way into the Level 7 terrace at the top of the building which gave us almost 360 views over the city and surrounding hills/scenery, along with binoculars which was very cool. It was hot though. A really warm day, so we couldn’t stay on the roof too long. If not just because we’d bake but we were also getting hungry too so we wandered along the street to the Pie Maker bakery. Endless interesting and delicious flavours, so we grabbed 4 items and shared all of them: Original Scotch Pie, Haggis Roll, Macaroni Pie, and a Tradional Pasty. A first taste of haggis which was so yum though I’m not sure if it’s representative of what haggis is by itself. Guess I’ll need to go back to Scotland just to have more haggis, stand-alone. We then wandered some more where we watched a busker doing a one-man comedy basketball act which was somehow simultaneously very funny and anti-climactic, which I thought felt like the perfect experience of watching a busker at the Fringe. To really drive home the 100% Fringe Festival experience which I’d heard about for many many years through watching hours of British comedy…was randomly seeing two very popular comedians walking past us in the street after leaving the busking: Nish Kumar and Ed Gamble just wandering through Old Town past us. Gamble being one of the two hosts of my favourite weekly comedy-food podcast “Off Menu” and comedian that I had seen perform stand-up just a few months earlier in Auckland SkyCity. It felt surreal, not just because I’d now seen him literally on opposite sides of the world, but also because I’d literally just listened to the 200th episode of their podcast on the bus trip to Edinburgh a day earlier so I selfishly stopped them in the street, fangirling quickly to say hello, shake his hand and let him know I’d enjoyed the show he’d done on the other side of the world. Anyway, moving on we killed some time walking around the city, enjoying the sun at the park, and getting a bevvy at the university “Library Bar” that was recommended by cousin Livvy who just got accepted for uni entrance - hooray 🍻 And, followed that with the best shawarma ever before going to the comedy show I’d chosen the day prior in one of the “Bunkers” in the Pleasance Courtyard location. It was a good choice: a very funny and meaningful stand up hour “Darran Griffiths: Inconceivable” which was right up our alley and a great end to the day in Edinburgh. Finding our way back to the Waverley Station we headed back to Aberdour where we had a stunning view of the bright sunset reflecting off the firth from our train on one of the 3 huge bridge crossings. Then more sun setting over the rolling hills, and a calm seaside walk back to our hotel. We enjoyed the shortbread and fudge we’d saved from the night prior with a cup of tea and headed to bed before an early start to catch our taxi booked for the airport drop-off.Læs mere

      All things Scotland

      19. august 2023, Skotland ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

After a good nights sleep, and a belly full of breaky, we packed our things and headed off to Edinburgh.
From here we walked around the city and took pictures of the castle up on the hill, and saw a Scotts man playing the bagpipes. A stroll through the gardens and then off to find a gift shop in search of more magnets.Læs mere

      North to Scotland

      31. august 2023, Skotland ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

      Day 4 and 5:
A travel day. Not by plane. Not by car. By train. The 4 hour transport left from Kings Cross station and ended at Edinburgh. I'd recommend this as it is easier than a plane and faster than a car. Naturally, we got to the station early and visited Platform 9 3/4 to take a photo of some random parent's child and to sit down with the king for a bit - it is his station after all.

Arriving in Edinburgh, our first order of business was to find our AbnB. This city has tourists crawling all over the hills, and we joined them. Our place is in a unique location. The back wall is the inside wall of the Greyfriars graveyard. None other than Tom Riddle is buried here. JK Rowling wrote the first Harry Potter book in a coffee shop, the Elephant House, overlooking the graveyard. The shop was closed due to a fire, so there were no visitors.

Exploration of the city began and continued into the next day. Dinner was first, and we ate at a place Kim and I liked here in the UK, Nanodo's. It's a chain baked chicken restaurant, Portuguese style. It was convenient and good. In the morning, I hiked to the top of Arthur's seat. It's an extinct volcano and hs great views 360 degrees. I highly recommend it.

Back at the AbnB, we prepared for our entrance time to Edinburgh castle. We self guided and went through several museums. This fortress is also built upon the top of a hill and is a great location for such. But, even so, it changed hands from Scottish to English several times over the centuries.

Colton Hill sits to the east of the castle and is another good place to walk up and see views all around. It's not as good as Arthur's Seat, but it's much easier to walk. Speaking of walking, Kim is racking up the miles. Another day, and she will be approaching 50 miles on this trip, and she has the blisters to prove it.

Interesting facts: First, the Sir Walter Scott monument (see photo) is the 2nd tallest monument to a writer in the world. I'm reading his most famous book on this trip - Ivanhoe. Second, everywhere in this city, it is easy to see the inspiration for the Harry Potter series. The buildings, streets, roof tops, hill tops, and castle scream HP.

We closed the day looking in the shops and having dinner. Does anyone fancy a wool scarf, hat, shirt, sweater, socks, and maybe even underwear? They have it here. For dinner, we went to another pub. I got the Cullen Skink soup. Yes, what a name for soup. It's a scottish fish crowder.

So far, Edinburgh has been an interesting place to visit. Lots to see and do in a compact old and new town area. The weather has been great for walking about. More tomorrow as we seek out ghosts, witches, and grave robbers.

      The Castle and beyond

      12. september 2023, Skotland ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Today, we did a tour to Edinburgh castle and walked the Royal Mile. We had a great tour guide, she was actually from Croatia, and was lots of fun. I ended up buying a peaty treat for myself at Cadenheads. We also explored some of the many closes off of the Royal Mile and had lunch at the Witchery. And tea and scones at Clarinda's Tearoom. We also visited the giftshop at Hollyrood Palace, and the Scottish Parliment building, a wild looking modern structure. In the evening,
we made it down to Dean Vllage on the Wayers of Leith and then back to the hotel for dinner.

      Edinburgh Castle

      16. november 2023, Skotland ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

      Edinburgh Castle

      1. december 2023, Skotland ⋅ ⛅ -3 °C

We were down to 3 people due to food poisoning and the shites. Jodie was laid up with the chunders and Ronan recorded the sound of his own bowel motion.
As for our destination, Edinburgh Castle sits atop a volcanic plug in the centre of Edinburgh. It sets an imposing figure and is an impressive structure indeed. Obviously a wise choice for a castle, barracks and fortifications. It was very cold today with a top of 1°C.Læs mere

      Harry Potter Tour #1

      21. oktober 2023, Skotland ⋅ 🌧 7 °C

First day in Scotland! I'm a potterhead, so all of my stops were about the most famous wizard in the World: Harry Potter 🔮
If you don't know, Edinburgh was such an inspiration for JK Rowling (maybe because she leaved there in the meantime she was writing the hp saga?).
      So, there we have:
      — Edinburgh Castle which reminds me Hogwarts;
      — Victoria's Street or Diagon Alley

      Edinburgh Castle

      28. april, Skotland ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

      Lay of the Land

      2. maj, Skotland ⋅ 🌬 55 °F

We walked around Edinburgh. First to a pub where, in a week we will attend a beer tasting, then we took a tram to the port where, again later on, we might take a tour of the Britannia Yacht. We also walked down the Royal Mile (no photos were taken and we will walk that as an event of its own). Then a bus home. Learning our new neighborhood is always fun.Læs mere
