      St Mawes

      February 26, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌬 7 °C

St Mawes is where my Mum and Dad came on their honeymoon in May 1964. They stayed at the Ship and Castle Hotel, which still stands in prime position on the quayside.

We visited the place with them about 20 years ago to recreate a photo taken back in the sixties. We didn't stay long and, if I'm honest, St Mawes didn't make much of an impression on me. This time, despite the cold temperature, the sun was shining and we spent a few hours exploring. I think it's now my new favourite place in Cornwall!!

We enjoyed the number and variety of independent shops and bought some fig and date and some blood orange 🍊 balsamic vinegars. We also went to the castle 🏰 where we joined English Heritage on a '15 months for the price of 12' deal. I climbed the hill to explore the very simple parish church. We admired the seafront properties and imagined a lottery win to be able to afford one! 🤣😂

      Day out on Percuil River

      May 30, 2021 in England ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Canoe pumped up and off we set. A fairly strong breeze to start with against the tide but the good news was we knew we could just drift back when the tide turned.
As always, once we got up river, sadly a lot of boats just abandoned on the shore banks to rot but some stunning homes hidden away with superb views and their own jetty. Could we be moving again?😜
Relaxing on deck we are disturbed as a fellow yachtie confesses to loosing their dinghy. Eric fortunately saw a dinghy being towed in, so off he goes in Doogle (our dinghy) to take them to shore to collect it!

      St Just-In-Roseland parish church

      February 27, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

We took the ferry ⛴️ back to St Mawes and then caught the 2.30pm bus 🚌. We broke our journey at St. Just in Roseland church ⛪️ as we had been advised that it's a must-see sight in Cornwall.

It's a steep walk down a hill from the main road to visit the church (and an even steeper one back!), but it was well worth it to see this peaceful and magical place! The tide was out during our visit, so we didn't see the water lapping up to the church's grounds or the church reflected in it. Nevertheless, it was still beautiful! I bought a postcard to show me what it looks like at high tide 😀.

There has been some sort of church on the site of St. Just in Roseland since as far back as 550 AD. The present church was consecrated on 14th August 1261 by Bishop Bronescombe. About half the church you see today dates from then. The tower was added in the early 15th century. During the 1800s, the church underwent an extensive restoration. Unfortunately, much of the original and 15th century material, including the ancient pews, was discarded at this time.

Today, St Just church ⛪️ remains a focal point for the local community, as well as being an attraction for tourists. It is a popular wedding venue. If the tide is right, the bride and groom can arrive and leave by boat.

The church grounds are as beautiful and as well-maintained as the church itself. Not only is it an extensive graveyard, it is also a pretty garden with striking and unique plants.

In his book, 'In Search of England', written in the 1920s, H V Morton describes his visit to St Just in Roseland:

'I have blundered into a Garden of Eden that cannot be described in pen or paint. There is a degree of beauty that flies so high that no net of words or no snare of colour can hope to capture it. There are a few cottages lost in the trees 🌳, a vicarage with two old cannon balls propping open the garden gate, and a church in a churchyard which is one of the little-known glories of Cornwall. I would like to know if there is in the whole of England, a churchyard more beautiful than this.'

      St Mawes

      August 26, 2020 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We are making our way south westward to have a look at parts of Cornwall we have not seen before. We are staying at the CAMC site just to the north of the town and are booked in for five nights.
Our first morning was spent in the van sheltering from torrential rain, which came down all night and continued through to 1 pm. Ever optimistic we set off for a short walk after lunch as the skies cleared a little bit. We wandered down to the SW coast path at Creek Stephen then followed the path through to Porthcurnick Beach. We sheltered from some heavy rain showers on the way. At Porthbean Beach someone had left an impression of Stone Henge in the sand. We enjoyed a nice coffee and tea and a very sweet Rocky Road at the Hidden Hut cafe overlooking Porthcurnick Beach.
Friday saw us cycle into St Mawes in late morning after the predicted rain showers had passed through. A very hilly route but only 6 miles The sky threatened rain at any time and we enjoyed bright sunshine in between some rainy outbursts. We had a quite disappointing cornish pasty at the local bakery, then took a trip around the St Mawes Castle which over looks the Fal river mouth to Falmouth and Pendennis Castle. St Mawes was busy and beautiful.

      St Mawes

      August 30, 2020 in England ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

We cycled to St Mawes in the morning - a beautiful sunny day - and caught the pedestrian ferry to Falmouth across Carrick Roads.
Falmouth was quite busy on the Bank Holiday - we wandered along the main street then climbed Jacobs Ladder to view the estuary from the high ground. We carried to Pendennis Castle where we enjoyed our picnic prior to having a short tour around the second world war batteries and the old Tudor keep. Both short tours were interesting and the views from the old Tudor keep were far reaching.Read more
