      Chatanooga

      Had three nights in Chattanooga stayed at the Residence by Marriot. It is excellently situated, straight across the street from the hotel, which is a free shuttle bus depot. These run all day, one does a circle north of the river, and the other two take you to the Chattanooga Choochoo. It is the old train depot and it has an old train. That's basically it, unless you want a bar or coffee shop. It's not really impressive, but as it is free to get to, it would be weird not to visit it once. After the train, we spotted a trolley bus tour just about to start, so we went on board. It was about two and a half hours long, and there were two stops, one at the Coker Museum and one at a sculpture park. I really liked the Coker Museum and would really recommend it to anyone who likes old bikes and cars. It is small, so easy to get round, but it is packed with beautiful old bikes, including lots of old Hatleys and Indians. The tour guide was pleasant, really informative, and had a sense of humour, which made the tour more enjoyable. After the tour, we went around the Riverside artists market. There are some interesting stalls selling home-made things like jewellery, candy and biscuits, etc. On this really hot day, though, the biggest queue was for the fresh chopped fruit and fruit juices. Saturday night there was a free festival on the riverside, it was really popular. There were families enjoying the show and loads of food trucks. The queues were quite long, but i managed to try a corn dog and a funnel cake. Both were typical fairground food, and i enjoyed them. On Sunday, we went to the incline railway. This is on the edge of the city, and we had to take two free shuttles to get there. The first to the choochoo again, then another one o wards from there. I know it sounds weird calling it a choochoo, but that's what they all call it in Chattanooga. Even the shuttle has it named as the destination. The incline railway is a great little trip, and if the top of the mountain hadn't been covered in clouds, I bet the view would have been amazing. In the evening we went on the Souhern Belle boat trip. It was a really relaxing way yo spend a couple of hours on a Sunday evening. The waiting area is a really big gift shop, cafe and bar. When we went boarded, we found d a quiet spot on the foredeck, and I was really pleased we did, after I had a walk to the upper decks. It was really busy up there, with very excited kids running everywhere. The middle deck reminded me of a wedding reception, the bit where the children slide round on the dance floor, on their knees. The journey was really chilled and it is great to see this river being such a wonderful aural area in a city centre. People were boating, kayaking, and swimming, there is a wooded island in the centre, and people had moored up at it to picnic and swim. Chatanooga is a good tourist destination, with quite a lot to see and do in a central area, so you aren't missing out if you don't have a car. There is a lot more to see and do than we managed to squeeze in, too. Czytaj więcej

      Ein Reinfall

      Man kann eigentlich mit allem irgendwie leben. Aber will man das?
      Okay, von vorne. Wir kehren Nashville mit schönen Erinnerungen an die Stadt den Rücken. Die Fahrt bis nach Chattanooga ist nicht lang, zusätzlich wird uns aber eine Stunde geklaut. Chattanooga scheint genau an einer Zonengrenze zu liegen. Je nachdem wo man sich im Großraum befindet hat man entweder eine Stunde mehr oder eine weniger. Die Landschaft ist wunderbar. Die Hügel werden zu Bergen und alles ist grün. Unser Hotel, das Best Western Plus Arbor Inn, liegt in East Ridge. Dennoch ist es nicht weit bis Chattanooga.
      Gestern hatte ich eine These aufgestellt, dass Best Western einzelne Hotels aufgekauft hat und erneuert. Diese dann aber mit dem alten Personal weiterlaufen lässt. Anders sind einige Mängel nicht zu erklären. Aber das ist eben nur eine These. Am heutigen Tag haben wir auch wieder solch ein Hotel. Ich bin gespannt ob sich meine These bestätigt. Wir erreichen die Adresse und da steht auch ein Hotel mit Parkplatz und Auffahrt. Ich halte vor der Lobby, also dort wo eigentlich die Lobby sein soll. Hier ist ein Arbeiter welcher gerade scheinbar Fliesen verlegt. Ein Rundumblick offenbart den Eingang zur behelfsmäßigen Lobby. Stimmt meine These? Der Bereich der Behelfslobby wurde schon renoviert, dahinter sind die Arbeiten noch in vollem Gange. Auf den Türschlössern liegt Staub, der Pool hat geschlossen und überall liegen Baumaterialien. Das Zimmer liegt am Ende eines nicht enden wollenden Gangs und ist renoviert. Aber auch hier tun sich Mängel auf. Manche Steckdosen kann man nicht nutzen, da die Adapter vom Platz her nicht passen, hier und da sind kleinere Wasserschäden zu sehen, die alten Türen sind mit neuen Spiegeln versehen so dass man Schwierigkeiten hat diese zu öffnen. Alles in Allem sind es viele kleine Dinge die es eigentlich nicht erlauben das Hotel zu betreiben ohne schlechte Bewertungen zu bekommen. Wir sind im Urlaub eigentlich etwas anderes gewöhnt.
      Gut es sind die letzten Nächte, von daher Zähne zusammen beißen und durch.
      Wer also in Amerika ein Hotel bucht sollte sich nicht auf zu lange Namen einlassen und bei den renommierten Hotelketten bleiben. Wir haben diesmal mit der Comfort Inn Kette gute Erfahrungen gemacht. Zu billig sollte es auch nicht sein. Ich würde jetzt mal behaupten das man mit 50 Dollar pro Nacht und Person rechnen sollte. Damit ist man im Nettopreis meist auf der besten Seite. Und dann natürlich immer die Rezensionen durchlesen.
      Wir haben heute keine Lust mehr nach Downtown zu fahren, da hier Chattanooga eigentlich auch nichts anbietet. Walmart liefert heute das Abendessen, abholen müssen wir es uns dennoch selbst. Jeder packt seine Koffer so das alles passt und all die Sachen Deutschland erreichen.
      Morgen haben wir einiges vor und ich denke das wird lustig und interessant. Vor 22 Jahren war es das jedenfalls.       Czytaj więcej

      Historische Walnut Bridge & Umgebung

      Die 1890 erbaute 724 m lange Walnut Street Bridge verbindet die Innenstadt von Chattanooga, Tennessee, mit North Chattanooga. Die Hauptspannweiten der Brücke sind durch Fachwerkspannweiten mit Pennsylvania verbunden. Der Obergurt dieser Fachwerkspannweiten ist in fünf Abschnitten konfiguriert, wodurch die Spannweiten dem Camelback-Fachwerkdesign ähneln. Die Brücke ist als extrem langes und altes Beispiel ihrer Art historisch bedeutsam; laut Historic American Engineering Record: „Die Brücke war offenbar die erste nichtmilitärische Autobahnbrücke über den Tennessee River.“ Czytaj więcej

      National Cemetry - Chattanooga

      Bedingt durch 700.000 Tote im Civil War von 1861 bis 1865 wurden in den Südstaaten 14 Nationalfriedhöfe angelegt.
      Einer der größten von heutzutage 147 Friedhöfen liegt in Chattanooga.

      Neben den Mitgliedern des amerikanischen Militärs haben hier auch Kriegsgefangene aus Deutschland ihre letzte Ruhe finden können.

      Das Leben des Desmond Doss, der erste Soldat der USA, der mit einer Medal of Honor ausgezeichnet wurde, ohne je eine Waffe im Krieg getragen zu haben, wurde 2016 in dem Film Hicksaw Ridge verfilmt. Desmond Doss fand seine letzte Ruhe in Chattanooga.       Czytaj więcej

      Chattajack race

      After a quick paddle the day before we were looking forward to plenty of flow on the river to help us along.
      Come race day someone had turned the river off & created a 52km long lake!
      The water release from the dam just above the start was not scheduled till mid afternoon so it was a long & uncharacteristically hot slog down the Tennessee River
      The scenery was big & stunning, the other paddlers friendly & very chatty, the water warm &the river bends never ending!       Czytaj więcej

      Es soll Schnitzel geben. So der Wunsch unserer Freunde.
      Seit einiger Zeit gibt es auch ein Aldi in der Stadt. Wo hätten wir besser für ein Gericht aus der Heimat einkaufen können, außer bei einem Discounter aus der Heimat.

      Tennessee Aquarium

      Heute waren wir im Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga.

      Es gibt dort zwei Gebäude, dem ursprünglichen River Journey-Gebäude, das 1992 eröffnet wurde, und die benachbarte Ocean Journey-Erweiterung, die 2005 eröffnet wurde.

      Chattanooga (Tennessee)

      When we woke up, we felt that we desperately needed a day of rest. So instead of spending another day in Stonefort, we decided to go down to Chattanooga.
      The city was very different from the cities we had visited on our trip so far. It looked very clean and tidy 😅.
      We first went to the Songbird Music and Guitar Museum where we learned a lot about the early blues music history of Tennessee, especially of Chattanooga and its former music and entertainment district around "Big 9 Street". There were also some original guitars of famous musicians like BB King, Chuck Berry, Duane Allman, Les Paul and Bo Diddley 🎸.
      After the museum, we headed to the Arts District and the pedestrian bridge over the Tennessee River, where we enjoyed delicious coffee-blueberry ice cream. It seems that Chattanooga makes good use of every bit of space it has in this area. There are recreational parks, fountains, sculptures, and even a small amphitheater-like music stage under a bridge!
      A couple of Birte's friends from Ann Arbor recently moved to Chattanooga, and we know of others who are thinking or dreaming about it. Now we understand why. The city is really nice and the area is just amazing! There's so much climbing in the area that a lifetime wouldn't be enough to try it all!       Czytaj więcej

      Kajak auf Chickamauga

      In den Morgenstunden, als es noch nicht zu warm war, habe wir eine richtig schöne Tour über den See gemacht. Viel ruhiger und entspannter hätten wir den See wahrscheinlich nicht antreffen können. So haben uns Fischreiher und Fischadler auf der Tour begleitet. Czytaj więcej
