The Alaskan Raptor Centre is a rehabilitation facility for raptors and other birds. The aim is to release the birds back to the wild. Set in a natural forest habitat, we are very impressed with the set up. It's also a bear habitat and there are warning signs on the trails.Read more

Since we settled in Vancouver, Brenda and I have talked about taking an Alaskan cruise. For whatever reason, we just never got around to it.

For her birthday this year, I decided I would offer to take Brenda on that much discussed voyage.

Although her birthday is in May, we had already been away from Vancouver for a good part of 2019, so we planned to set sail sometime in the late summer. We began scouring the travel websites for the best deals and most appealing offers, but we just couldn't seem to find anything that met our criteria. And then one day Brenda came to me with a "sorta" Alaskan cruise. On September 6 the ship sets sail for Sitka, Alaska, makes a brief stop there and then heads across the Bering sea to Japan. For a 15 day cruise with several perks thrown in, the price was unbeatable and we jumped on the offer.

And that, folks, is how we ended up in Tokyo on an Alaskan cruise.Read more

India Creek is a salmon spawning creek. At the moment it is full of salmon returning to spawn and is literally wall-to-wall salmon.

Temperate Rainforest, India Creek

The cool temperate rainforest shows all the characteristics of this type of vegetation. Trees are mostly Western Hemlock and White Spruce.

Silver Muse Day 8 - Sitka

Today we anchored in the small town of Sitka, which has a very eclectic blend of native Alaskan, Russian and American culture. The small port town was charming and picturesque. Before our last tour excursion we hiked on our own through the Sitka National Historical Park and then to the Alaska Raptor Center. Where we saw a live demonstration with a bald eagle up close. She was massive and majestic at the same time. We made out way back to the pier just in time for our Sea Otter and Wildlife Cruise. We saw more whales, sea lions, and sea otters on the cruise. We also saw so many bald eagles flying around, they were like pigeons! Once again the weather was cooperating and we had another sunny day. Back on board we had a private cocktail hour and dinner with our tour group on the pool deck. While they provided heaters and blankets, it got very chilly by the end and most people passed on the Baked Alaskan desert. Not me though, I powered through the ice cream!Read more
