      Jeckyll Island

      February 25, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

We stayed at a marina that offered complementary bikes. We rode to the historic town, toured the Mosaic museum and had a trolly tour. We passed by many cottages and the club house. Fun little island and a must see place.Read more

      Jekyll Island GA

      June 18, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

We sailed up to Jekyll Island with Pacific High and anchored in Jekyll Creek in front of the marina. This was our first time here, so on the advice of our friends, John rented a bicycle while Jamie and Cheryl used their on-board bikes. We set out on the ocean path heading north. The path was awesome, well maintained with water fountains (including pet outlets) and foot baths at ocean entries. We stopped at the Dead Oaks beach that Jamie recalled from earlier. Now it's been improved with tons of heavy boulders and scrapped cement to stop erosion. Lot of people go there to hang out with huge oaks, some standing dead and some fallen.

We kept going north, ending up at a very ripply, almost washboard bike trail across marshes that ended at the fishing piers at the tip. We turned back south, now on roads and paths, until stopping to eat the sandwiches Jamie had thoughtfully brought. Now we could look across East River/St Simons Sound at Sidney Lanier Bridge and Brunswick GA. It's a huge body of water, but so shallow that few boats are around. We finally found a field, which Jamie wanted so he could show me how to throw boomerangs that he'd brought. I tried a few times and wasn't doing too well, so Jamie demonstrated and it was coming back well, until a live oak caught it and did not return it.

Back to the Jekyll Harbor Marina (very nice place) where for $20 you can land your dinghy, take showers, do laundry, get water and empty trash. That said, we settled for some cold beers.

    • Day 77

      Jekyll, GA to Fernandina, FL

      November 5, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

WE ARE IN FLORIDA!!!!!!!! That is so important. We are one jump away from the Bahamas! Amazing to both of us that we have made it this far. We asked each other today, "If we were done here, what would we do with the boat?" Interestingly, I said, "I would keep it." I meant it too. I have dreams of tropical beaches and shores and it has to be done!

We are seeing so much wildlife in the ocean. We have been traveling on the outside mostly and we see so many dolphins, jumping fish, we think we saw a manatee and we definitely saw a huge sea turtle. We haven't seen whales yet, but we know they are coming. Unfortunately, we have also seen some very heavy shoaling. This is sand shifting under the water. Today we almost crashed twice in 30 miles because of this! Thanks to Dave's quick driving and my keen eyes, we avoided disaster. But the ocean, folks, needs to be respected. All the electronics in the world are not keeping us 100% safe. We have to use our eyes and senses always.

Other than our near beaching's and sea life sightings, the journey today was quick. We are wondering how exactly to tackle Florida while we prepare to jump over to the Bahamas and today we decided a quick trip was the key. We are also getting to meet Marissa's parents (Marissa is Tyler's girlfriend) and that was worth a stop.

What Could Go Right? We got a nice early morning walk in on Jekyll Island and it was so tropically beautiful. If anyone is looking for a fun getaway, I would highly recommend Jekyll. It seems to be a secret, so shush! We also had a nice night on the hook with no problems and it was free! Then Dave was able to look at the fuel and black water issues and adjust them to working. So, yay, for a productive stop.

What Could Go Wrong? The exciting travel adventures were enough "go wrong" for the day, to be honest. There is something so humbling about being out there in the middle of the Atlantic facing a debacle. Of course, when we were debriefing later, after the shaking stopped for both of us, mind you, it occurred to us that if anything happened, all we would have had to do was get out of the boat and stand up. :) Anyway, that was enough, go wrong for the day.

      Jekyll Island

      March 27 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

Got some stormy weather on our way to Jekyll Island but it stopped as we were docking and turned into a nice day. Moki and I did some early recon and then James and I took some bikes out for a spin to dinner. From Jekyll Harbor Marina where we are staying it’s only .8 miles to the beach. Supposed to rain again this evening and all day tomorrow with NNW 15-25. Will be a good day to be in a marina!Read more
