    • Day 5–6

Upper Pennisula of Michigan -St. Ignace

      June 25 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Today was probably one of the worst driving days we've ever had. The only one worst was when we got caught in that snow/ice storm in Montana for Thanksgiving. Sheer line winds, monsoon rains and overall rogue winds all day long. The wind was so bad we had to pull into a truck stop for 1.5 hours to wait it out.

Aside from bad weather, MI is almost like LA. Trees, swamps, no views..boring. And people from MI...not so friendly.

After the terrible drive, we topped it off with the drive across the Mackinac Bridge. While I was not as freaked out crossing this 1 like I am w/the Lake Charles Bridge, Redd was. Of course, he's driving an 8' wide bus in a 12' wide lane. The 18 wheelers crossing are regulated to 20mph and other vehicles are topped at 40. There's also a toll per axel, so we had to pay $14 for the bus and jeep.

We're staying at the Tiki RV park, which said there were views of Lake Huron...yea if you're standing in the street haha. It's actually a nice park w/full hookups. And they gave us a pull thru site, so that's convenient.

After we hooked up, we went into St. Ignace to get some food. We ate at a place called The Gangplank. We had burgers and fries, which was not terribly expensive and actually homemade, including hand cut fries.

We went back across the bridge this time in the jeep to Mackinac City. This is a tourist destination, but I'm not sure what the draw is. We arrived too late to take the ferry to Mackinac Island, but still. It's mostly old people and families. Not sure what the families are doing?

We visited a lighthouse, which was closed since it was 8pm and drove down to the shore of Lake Huron so redd could see if it was cold. Surprise, it was, lol.

We then decided to watch the sunset at Wilderness State Park, which was lovely. They are very proud of their international dark sky designation, and we went out to Headwaters Dark Sky Park. We weren't sure east to expect, but there were a ton of people waiting for the presentation and to look thru the telescopes. Really didn't want to fight kids for a view of Jupiter so we left and headed back to the rv park, paid the toll for the 3rd time on the bridge.

We only have a 2 hour drive tomorrow. It's supposed to be rainy again, but hopefully, it's not too bad.

    • St Ignace

      August 21, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

      Anchoring near Government Island

      August 28, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

We anchored two nights in a protected bay. A small island with hiking trails was nearby. We had a situation where our anchor chain broke and the only thing holding it to us was the bridal. After some clever thinking we were able to pull the chain in and didn’t lose the anchor.Read more

      Arrived in Hessel

      July 9, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Dinner was at 4:45 PM. (It was lunch for them). Then fishing (not catching) and card games till bedtime. Lots of kids/grandkids/cousins are here (yearly family reunion) many I’ve never previously met.

Bedtime was at 11:00. Late for me and I believe they were just being kind….it’s normally 2:00-3:00 am 🤪

    • Day 134

      To the UP

      October 2, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

First day of driving is under our belts. Headed north to go home through the UP to try and catch the fall colors. The trees were all beginning to turn in Traverse area so figured we would have more color going north.
Our decision didn't disappoint. Everything is beginning to turn...yellows, oranges, reds, magentas. Still more color to come but we got pockets that seemed to get colder first and looked beautiful!
Started our day driving up M-22 through Charlevoix, one of my favorite lakeside towns, but did not stop. Just needed to get some miles in. Drove through Habor Springs, had hoped to have lunch at this darling town, but they were having an big fall festival... just looked too daunting to try and park our RV and the Jeep so headed on around the coast to drive the Tunnel of Trees. (M-119)
We only got about 7 or 8 miles on the road before "we" had to bail on this route and go more inland. Road is a beautiful single lane road that just barely accommodates two way traffic. They don't even have a painted middle line on the road. Tom was not having a good time, so we turned inland to find some slightly wider roads.
Stopped at a nice restaurant bar (State Road Provisions) out in the middle of nowhere (well actually it is on State Road) and shared a pretty good burger and a beer.
I took over driving to give Tom a break and got us safely across the Mackinac Bridge and into the UP. Only went about 40 miles along the coast and stopped at Hog Island State campground. We had stayed here once before, right on the lake, and knew it would accommodate the RV and Jeep. Went through a pretty strong rainstorm to get here, but we were happy to have it relatively dry when we pulled in. Just soup and salad for dinner.

    • Day 6

      Milakokia to St Ignas

      September 28, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

      Day 6!

What a day. It began at a lovely rustic campground with a weird little breakfast of half a Backpacker's Pantry meal I didn't finish last night, half of a Butterfingers bar, and some buckwheat tea that Emma got me from Japan. Thanks, Em!

My first stop was King Fish Market to pick up smoked salmon and crackers for lunch. It's been there since 1951! I opted for Cajun despite the shop owner's brown sugar recommendation. I ended up saving it for dinner and having a pastie instead (pass - tee. I was corrected multiple times).

These Yoopers take pasties seriously! It's basically a hot pocket... but don't tell them I said so. I got my pasty from the world renound "Letho's", which has been around since even before King's. And guess what. While I was checking out, the man behind me offered to buy me lunch! But there's more! HE'S FROM THE LEHTO FAMILY! And also, the shop owner, Bobby, gave me an apple and three pears. These Yoopers, folks. Mm.

I then biked down a road called Cheeseman as I studied football podcasts so I had something to talk about at a bar tonight during the Packer's/Lion's game. My studies were a little fruitless 🤷‍♂️

A bike mechanic from Escanaba recommended camping at Straits State Park, so I got myself a campsite, set up my tent, and have been hanging out at a quaint little bar ever since. Listening to live music and charging my battery. No football conversations yet... I'm still working up the courage...

      Tomorrow - the LP!

      🍎 The Pasty!
🎶 Great be the Lake, Ben Lamar Gay
      🙏 The Lahto's, of course!

Lake Michigan Touring Rally Day 2

      August 31, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

There was a haircut place next door, and after that, I made it to the hotel to do laundry...finally. It's a good thing I got to Traverse City so early because it took forever to wash and dry just one load. I made it to the dealership just in time for hors d'oeuvre (little smokies, jalapeno poppers, and cheese sticks 😶).

Heading back to the hotel, at the gas station I grabbed a bite for dinner and breakfast, then called it an early night.

I was up at 06:00 this morning to pack and meet Bill, Paul, and Kathy at their hotel. I've ridden at least one day with Bill each touring rally except the Texas one, so it was nice to jump in him again.

We rolled at 07:30 or there about and have had a nice day hugging the east side of Lake Michigan and swooping through the Tunnel of Trees to pop out at Legs Inn, Michigan's 50 Rides 1 Nation location.

Then it was further north to Mackinaw City. I found a couple of pairs of my awesome gloves at the dealership there. (I'm picking up extras because they don't make them anymore.) Plus, we got our photos at a 10 Rides for 2021 location, giving me 9 of the 10. Only 1 to go!!

Now we're stopped for lunch at a place called Moofinfries. Ice cream and burgers (moo), fish (fin), and fries. Clever. One of the ice cream flavors is Michigan Pot Hole 🤣.

I have walked across the street to get pasties. That is NOT pronounced with a long A. It's pass-tees. I know what they are, but have never had one. Bill and Kathy have never even heard of them, so I'm getting three for us. Yummy!

So long [for now], and thanks for all the fish! ✌️

      Day 164 mileage: 273.7 (total 44051.8)
      50 Rides, 1 Nation: 1 (total 38)
      10 Rides for 2021: 1 (9 of 10)
