      Sugarloaf Key KOA

      January 8, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

It was already a very long day getting our trailer safe to travel. We decided to stock up and grab a sandwich-to-go at the last Whole Foods before we arrived in the Keys where we are sure the only thing you can get to eat is crabs and mangos. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

We finally got on the road about 1:30. After just an hour we found ourselves actually navigating Highway 1 through the Keys themselves. Though we negotiated some pretty dramatic storm weather on the way, the squalls were short-lived. We got giddy rubber-necking at all the exotic tropical plants and festive island-themed businesses. We congratulated ourselves on arriving at one of the few places in the US not currently experiencing sub-freezing temperatures.

We have a great campsite backing up to a strip of mangroves right on the water. They are just thick enough to protect us from the 25 mph winds that came up last night. We slept like babies with the windows wide open. Fortunately we are well stocked with food, as the agenda for today has been to do ... let's see ... oh yes ... NOTHING!!

We arrive at last! Davie, FL KOA

      January 6, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 77 °F

We had a long day's drive ahead of us, and we added at least an hour dealing with the flat tire and the trauma of some more serious damage to the trailer. We drove like demons til we arrived in the greater Miami area where we were forced to slow down. As Tammy described to me once, we experienced first-hand how freeway-driving Floridians slow down on EVERY hill, even though the tallest ones have about a 20-foot rise.

It was almost completely dark when we arrived at our campground, and technically the office was closed. However, someone was still there and cheerfully checked us in. They squeezed us into a very tight spot, and to get out of the street we had to back up so that our trailer was nestled between the two pull-outs of the RV behind us. We were too exhausted to complain OR take a photo.

I think we had raisin bran for dinner. All was not lost, however, as we had downloaded the final two episodes of Black Sails Season 1 which we enjoyed tucked cozily into our bed.
