Wieder mal viel gefahren

Heute machten wir uns morgens erstmal 800gr Steaks zum Frühstück. Anschliessend gings los Richtung östliche Rocky Mountains. Dazu mussten wir erst die Grasprärie durchqueren bis wir den Rocky Mountain National Park erreichten. Unterwegs sind uns einige Oversize-Transporte entgegengekommen, einer sogar der zwei Spuren brauchte. Zudem hatten wir unterwegs noch kurz leichten Regen. Im Rocky Mountain National Park gings dann über den Trail Ridge Road, den höchsten Pass der USA mit 3713m. Höher sind nur die Strassen auf den Mount Evans und Pikes Peak, diese sind allerdings Sackgassen. Leider hatte es auch viel Verkehr und Überholverbot überall, dementsprechend langsam ging es voran. Zudem setzte wieder Regen ein für kurze Zeit. Runter gings dann noch über den Milner Pass wo kurz nachdem wir das Regenkombi abgezogen hatten nochmals Regen kam. Wir fuhren bis Winter Park, wohin es Sammy mit eigentlich leerem Tank hinschaffte und bezogen das Hotelzimmer.

An sich ist der Nationalfeiertag der Amerikaner wie jeder andere Tag, nur dass man die Amerikanische Flagge so oft wie möglich auf seinen Kleidungsstücken hat, den ganzen Tag (theoretisch) Bier trinkt und es abends Feuerwerk gibt. Wir haben diesmal ausgeschlafen und sind dann in einer Kleinstadt in der Nähe von Denver „shoppen“ gegangen. Dort haben wir uns dann auch ein Konzert einer Country-Band und das anschliessende Feuerwerk angesehen 😊 Es war schön, aber nicht zu besonders 😉 (Videos von dem Feuerwerk gibt es zu sehen wenn ich wieder da bin 😉)Read more

Day 5: Winter Park and Breckenridge

Today we got biking early. After our experience on Sunday we were excited to try the other side of Winter Park! Well, that was misguided. The trail was really rocky and Gary fell a few times! We walked most of Blue Sky, Take D Leap and WTB trails. On Take D Leap, there were boulders that were taller than me that had bridges up them signaling that people were supposed to ride these! Crazy people! But as we were biking, someone did one. And he didn't die! It was kinda of amazing. But we finally got to Razzmatazz Trail. This one was really nice and we had fun on it. But then I was done. And Gary was sick of these trails. So we made our way back to the car. It was tricky because we got into a subdivision and had a hard time getting through. But we did make it back.

Then we were off to Wake N Bacon for brunch. It was really good, but while we were eating, Gary said, "I think we should do Breckenridge today." Since the weather for Thursday and Friday is kind of iffy.

After brunch we were off to more biking. But this time we knew what we were getting into. We made it to the bike shop in time to get bikes for the afternoon. We just had to be back by 5. We rode the same route as we did a few years ago, but one of the trails was changed because houses had been built there. The beginning was a huge climb, but then the fun set in. We got to the end and I was so tired. 20 miles of biking so far, but we had to get back to town. Gary was mad, but we took the easy River Trail back to town. I was so tired I didn't care.

Then it was off to Fairplay to check in and get dinner. We went to Casa Sanchez. It was Taco Tuesday (tacos for $0.99). We got them to go and they were so good!! Time for bed. We're hiking tomorrow!Read more

Mimi's cabin

On our way to Winter Park, we stopped at Berthoud Pass on the Continental Divide and, of course, another photo.
We were very pleased with Mimi's Cabin, our rental for the rest of the week. Comfortable and rustic with a lovely view of the mountains and close to the many hiking trails in the area, it was just about perfect. We enjoyed some drinks on the porch then a brisk walk uphill to marvel at the McMansions and their views along the ridge. We ate the best bbq'd burgers and had a few more drinks on the now chilly deck, then retreated inside to warm up in front of the cozy fire.Read more

Elk Meadow Sunken Bridge Trail

We headed out on a crisp morning to tackle what proved to be a challenging 6.5 mile hike. We found a beautiful meadow with magnificent views of the mountains where others had boondoggled and sat to enjoy a snack and the view before crossing Sunken Bridge. The climb following the bridge was steep & rocky but we persevered only to continue to climb on the road until we found the trail head for Zoom & downhill from there. Definitely a feeling of accomplishment.Read more

Colorado bound

We said good bye to Ashley and the girls this morning and then drove to Fraser, Colorado to spend the next few days with Meghan and Randy. The landscape was so varied on this drive. Kansas was flat, farm fields were in abundance with lots of wind towers. Then the majestic Rocky Mountains popped up in front of us in all of their beauty. The are simply spectacular though I will admit, I'm not a fan of traveling over the Berthoud Pass in an RV. The views are outstanding but the hairpin turns were not my idea of a fun time. Robert had to remind me to breathe. It's off to Rocky Mountain National Park tomorrow. We're hoping to see lots of wildlife.Read more

12:30 pm Friday: Descending the Rockies

We crossed The Continental Divide and are now descending. It's much snowier on the western side of the Rockies. I have no idea if that's always the case but it seems to be true right now.
