    Sydney in the Sunshine

    March 9, 2015 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Finally arrived in Sydney on overnight flight from Singapore. Too early to get into my room so I wandered down to the harbour and saw that magnificent view of the Opera House set against a brilliant blue sky in the morning sunshine. I was actually here, all the way from England on my own, all the travelling behind me and the prospect of lots to do in the days ahead. Could there be a more perfect start to a day? What better thing to do on a Monday morning that tour the Opera House, sit in the park, and soak up the view.Read more

  • Trip to Rotorua

    March 19, 2015 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

First day of a two day trip to Rotorua and Waitomo glowworm caves. Three hour drive to the caves through the countryside, blue skies, hazy hills in the distance. Took a very dark boat ride through the caves, which actually looked a bit like a film set rather than a natural cave, to view the ceiling lit up by glow worms. An impressive, but rather short, ride. Felt like I'd just been on a Disney ride somehow. Two more hours on the bus before reaching Rotorua,a beautiful little town, but with an ever present sulphur smell. We viewed the bubbling mud pools and geysirs, and walked along pathways with steam drifting across us. Also had a Maori dance show which was interesting but just a little bit too long. I really feel like I'm in New Zealand now. Checked in at the Holiday Inn for a night's stay.Read more

  • Beautiful Lake Rotorua

    March 20, 2015 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

I did not expect Lake Rotorua to be quite so beautiful. Sun glinted off the surface as I walked along the boardwalk pathway among the shady trees, enjoying the peace. Arrived at an area where steam rose up from the alien like landscape. Just the most amazing place, with the water sparkling in the sunlight. It was hot so I took advantage of the air conditioning in the Princess Gate hotel, and had fish and chips in the restaurant while a Judy Garland concert played over the speakers. Felt like I was in an old London hotel, not the other side of the world.Read more

  • Watching the paragliders over Queenstown

    March 22, 2015 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

Took the Skyline Gondola up the mountain for amazing views over Queenstown, watching the colourful paragliders gently sail past. Such an idyllic spot, spent ages up there just looking at the world. Came down via the Ecozip zipline, where we whizzed through the forest along a series of lines. There was a steep downhill walk for 15 minutes or so to reach the last line, apparently the world's steepest, a 30 storey drop. A fast but short ride through the trees, very exhilarating.Read more

  • Cruise on Lake Wakatipu

    March 23, 2015 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Took a cruise on the TSS Earnshaw, a lovely old steamship. It was cool in the breeze as we gently chugged across the lake, passing the parasailing boat on the way. Views lovely, like being on a Swiss lake. Back at the dock I decided to be brave and have a go at parasailing myself - can't say I really enjoyed it as it was pretty windy up in the air and boat seemed an awfully long way down, but glad I've done it.Read more

  • Arrival at Uluru

    March 25, 2015 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Complete change of scenery as I left New Zealand behind, and flew via Sydney into the heart of Australia and arrived at Uluru resort. Hot and dry and LOTS of flies! I took an exciting trip on the back of a Harley Davidson motorbike (my first time on a motorbike) round the rock, whizzing along in the cool air, stopping a couple of times for pictures and a pose of me astride the bike. What a way to see the Rock.Read more

  • Sunrise and Camels at Sunset

    March 26, 2015 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Up early for the sunrise but didn't get any really good photos. Escaped the heat of the day by relaxing before taking a camel ride at sunset on a camel named Monga. So peaceful as we made our way through through the desert watching the sun slowly sink behind the Rock. It was not exactly comfortable but I felt very secure in the sturdy sadde. Streaky clouds across the sky, cicadas chattering. Felt very remote and completely different from the scenery I've experienced so far on this trip. After an hour we were back at the ranch for snacks and delicious beer bread, before going back to hotel to look up at the stars filling the night sky.Read more
