    Finally made my first trip to Iceland, to arrive in drizzly Reykjavik, but loved the dramatic scenery on the drive from Keflavik airport, so I have the feeling I'm going to like this country. Two long day trips ahead of me in next two days.Read more

  • South Coast Waterfalls and Black Beaches

    My first view of the amazing scenery of the south coast, with the iconic Skogarfoss waterfall being the highlight, the sound of the water and feeling the spray as I clambered over the rocks at its foot was so wonderful. Even on a grey day it looked beautiful set amongst the green rocks. Next stop was the black beaches near Vik where I was caught in the mother of all hailstorms that came out of nowhere as I walked down to the shore. It was wild and windy, the sea crashing onto the sand, just exactly my sort of place, the feeling of being right next to nature.Read more

  • The Golden Circle

    A cold and cloudy day for my Golden Circle tour but scenery still very dramatic to see, the highlight being the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall. As with many places in Iceland, visitors can get right to the edge of the falls with not much to stop you going over the edge other than a single rope fence. Standing on the edge of a powerful waterfall is one my favourite places to be, and great views from the higher viewing point looking down into the gorge. The Geysir hot springs area was a little less dramatic for me after having seen Old Faithful in Yellowstone, but the bleakness of the area added to the atmosphere as the geysirs spurted briefly but frequently.Read more
