  • Jebel Akhdar

    April 15, 2022 in Oman ⋅ ⛅ 97 °F

Anika and I drove to the bottom of Jebel Akhdar in the hopes of finding someone with a 4x4 to hitchhike with. As luck would have it, a local immediately drives up and asks if we are looking for a guide to drive us. We negotiate the price a little and then get in his car and he takes us up to some nice viewpoints before stopping at one of the villages of Jebel Akhdar where he lets us out so we can walk around. The first city is has old buildings with a rose water distillery where we watched a demonstration of how rose water is made. Was very interesting to see the method (apparently it is different in other countries). We were lucky to catch the end of rose season, and we saw the bushes in the next town we walked into. Overall, beautiful villages known for their rose water so I'm glad we were able to see it. Our last stop was this gorgeous viewpoint overlooking a valley with villages and pomegranate orchards. Afterwards, we met up for dinner with our new American friend in Nizwa before heading back.Read more

  • Dimaniyat Islands

    April 16, 2022 in Oman ⋅ ⛅ 91 °F

Took a boat trip to Dimaniyat Islands. Considering I've been to many fantastic beaches, I wasn't sure how special this one would be, but it turned out to be amazing. There are numerous spots to stop, all seeming to be equally beautiful, but I loved where we went. The water was so calm and clear, it was one of the best snorkeling experiences I've had. I saw 2 turtles and was glad to be able to film them, along with numerous fish among the coral. We spent hours swimming and enjoying the gorgeous beach that had colorful orange and yellow rocks, and it was incredible to see the color of the water. We stayed until sunset and met some other residents and it was all around good vibes and a great day. Even a woman from SFV living in Oman! Afterwards, Mohamed, Anika, and I went to eat at a traditional Omani restaurant and I tried camel meat for the first time which was actually quite good, especially the sauce. Who knew? Then we got karak tea and tried Omani halwas which were not to my liking haha, but at least I tried.Read more

  • Stuck in the sand

    April 19, 2022 in Oman ⋅ ☀️ 100 °F

Only had a few days left and didn't want to waste a day, so I decided to go to the dunes by myself. Drove 2 hours, got to the edge, and decided to see how close I could get. I know you can't drive a sedan in the dunes, but there was a road that seemed fine. Went up it, didn't realize how much sand was on the road, decided to turn around and right as I did, got stuck in the sand. Called Anika who called her local friend Khalil and he called the police who then came to rescue me. Luckily it worked out. Really appreciate the kindness of Khalil who even met up with me after my 2 hour drive back to make sure my car was all in order. The sand was ominous especially with the sand storm that seemed to be coming in. Gave up on seeing the desert or Wadi Bani Khalid. Not everyday is a good day, but was made better by meeting a new friend and seeing the kindness of strangers.Read more

  • Iftar Hospitality

    April 20, 2022 in Oman ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

Anika and I went to Bimmah sinkhole today which was really nice to swim in. Reminded me of the cenotes in Mexico. We ran out of time to go to Wadi Shab, so we went to Sur instead. We were standing on the beach there when a local started talking with us and then invited us to join his family for dinner. We thought that we might be sitting with the family and just eating the extra food, but instead as we went into his house, he gave us a whole room to ourselves with an entire feast just for us. We were so surprised and wondered if we were maybe on a secret TV show or something. We asked to meet his family and said hi to his wife and all his children, and then we went back to our room to eat the best meal that we had had in Oman. So tasty. And then our host came with his youngest daughter and sat with us as he presented us with a delicious dessert. We all talked a bit as we watched sports with him on TV. It was such an amazing experience, exactly what I had been wanting to experience in Oman - getting to meet locals. Oman is truly a land of hospitality.Read more

  • New friends

A day of catching up on things I needed to do. Anika and I went to get Turkish food in the evening and we came across Diego and Ricardo and their friends, so we spent the evening with them. Was glad to see them one more time before leaving. Made some other new friends later in the evening as well and was sad that I only met them on the last day :( would've been great to spend more time with them. Goes to show, there are so many amazing people to meet everywhere you go.Read more

  • Last Day in Oman

    April 22, 2022 in Oman ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

Sadly, it is my last day in Oman. Mohamed, Anika, and I finally headed over to Wadi Shab. As we arrived, there were so many goats, I loved seeing my family! Hahaha. Then we took a boat across and began our hike. It was very beautiful walking through the canyon and seeing the water alongside. It wasn't too bad of a hike, just hot, but very rewarding when we finally got to the wadi and we just jumped inside the water. It felt like a natural water park where we swam in numerous pools of waters until we got all the way to the back where there is a cave. It was fun to swim in all the pools and enjoy the nature. Unfortunately, we couldn't spend all day there as Mohamed and I had booked a dinner cruise for afterwards. It was a cool dhow ship which took us along the coast and served pretty good food. Then afterwards, I packed up and said goodbye to my friends :(Read more
