So, something I didn't know about Checkpoint Charlie, is the reason for the name. It was the 3rd checkpoint. The first was Alpha. The second was Bravo. So the third was named Charlie. I'm going to try to go back tomorrow to take some more pictures close up.Read more

  • Memorial for the Murdered Jews

    July 23, 2025 in Germany ⋅ 🌧 64 °F

This is a memorial in honor of the Jews who were murdered by the Nazis. There are 2,711 slabs in the memorial. The setup is not a "maze" but is disorienting/confusing. This was done on purpose. The artist picked 2,711 slabs for a reason. However, he would never publicly say why. He would always say it was open to interpretation.
The paths were very narrow, and the ground wasn't flat (it was like you were going up and down miniature hills). We were given some time to walk around and given a meetup point. Even knowing where the point was, it was even disorienting for me a little.

  • Der Amplemann

    July 23, 2025 in Germany ⋅ 🌧 64 °F

This was our first stop. Let me introduce you to the "Ampelmann" (the traffic light man). These are what was used on the eastern side of Berlin for pedestrian crossings. Now that can be seen outside the east, but they're still cool! They have stores for him, and they even created an Ampelfrau (traffic light woman), although she is not used in actual street crossingssRead more

Kees and I finished off the night at a Bavarian restaurant. The employees all wore the traditional Bavarian outfits. I really liked my food. Kees was disappointed with the size of the schnitzel. We left the restaurant around 9. It was a very full day and a lot of walking! Over 18k steps!Read more

  • Female Construction Worker

    July 24, 2025 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

Something that the communists/socialists were very proud of was the rights of women. This picture celebrates their ability to work. In respect to women's rights, East Germany was far ahead of West Germany. To balance it out, there is also a statue of a male construction worker, but the focus was the female one.Read more

  • Former Royal Stables - The Karls

    July 24, 2025 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

This used to be the Royal Stablrs. It is now a music school. There are two bronze sculptures on either side. The left side is of Karl Marx, who is often referred to as the father of communism because of his book: "The Communist Manifesto". It represents socialists going to help the oppressed.
The other side is for Karl Liebknecht. He was a politician and revolutionary socialist and a leader of the far-left wing of the Social Democratic Party of Germany. He was also very anti-war. This represents him calling on soldiers to focus on ruling class when fighting (instead of attacking each other).

  • Eastside Gallery

    July 24, 2025 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 70 °F

This is the most famous part of the wall that is still standing. I regretted not seeing it when I was in Berlin the last time (20 years ago.... eesh!). One of the big reasons I picked this walking tour specifically was because it said we were coming here.
It is 1316 meters long, is the largest open-air art gallery in the world, and is the longest section of the Berlin Wall that is still standing. It has art from 118 artists from 21 countries. Some artists refused to restore their section, so there are some blank spots that are painted white.

  • Dönner Kabab

    July 24, 2025 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

While it isn't German food, Dönners are very popular in Berlin due to the large Turkish population. It is typically made with lamb (although sometimes beef) that is on a vertical spit that rotates in front of a vertical cooking element. It gets shaved off and put into a pocket (similar to a Pita). You typically put white sauce, cabbage, lettuce, and tomatoes (although they sometimes have other things too). They usually have fries that you can get with it.
So glad I was able to get one before I left!
