    Meridan Hill Park

    Our first stop on our pray tour around Washington DC. This park sits above the street, so we had to climb stairs to get to it. We gathered around a bench and our host shared some about the area known as Adams Morgan. It is a wealthier neighborhood but still culturally diverse. Here we prayed for the racial tention the city faces.Meer informatie

    Capital

    Our next stop on the tour was in front of the Capital building. Here we prayed for our countries leaders and the long hours that they put in to ensure it runs smoothly.

    Anacostia

    We then drove over the Anacostia River to South East DC which is commonly misrepresented as Anacostia (which as actually only a small neighborhood in this area). This is the poorest part of DC, there is a single supermarket with in this quaderent of DC. Walmart had told DC they would bring two here but has never carried out this deal.     Lookout

    Our final stop on the prayer tour was at a catholic church. Here you can get an amazing view of the whole entire city. Upon driving into the parking lot we noticed a cop car, as we approached the field to look at the city the cop flicked his lights on. We had no idea what was going to happen, but thankfully he just circled around us and then parked up closer to the church but still was probably watching us. We were then instructed to have silent prayers in our vans. After prayer, we were able leave the vans and take pictures of the view.Meer informatie

    Douglas Memorial Methodist Church

    We then returned to the church and prepared for bed. The boys turned off the lights first which conviently also turned off the lights in the girls room (Who were not fully ready for bed yet. Also the boys did not think to turn their air on, so they went to bed hot. The next morning started early with breakfast at 5:30 AM. Breakfast consisted of toast, bagels, cereal, and poptarts. Following breakfast we split into two group for our morning service projects.Meer informatie

    Calvary Protestant Episcopal Church

    We helped prepare and serve breakfast to the homeless people at this church. First of all Josiah, Makenna, and Kaitlyn helped prepare and butter biscuits, meanwhile Jeremy sat at a table and welcomed the guests, he also made sure they each signed in. Our City Host Kristyn began to talk to some of the homeless people, slowly Jess and Kailah joined her, soon Liz and Madison went over to another table. Greg and Josh then went over an introduced ourselves to a man. We soon then helped pass out plasticware to the tables. The food we served included gritts, sausage, eggs, applesauce, chicken, and biscuits. For drinks they had orange juice and coffee. We served 45 homeless individuals. After being prayed for by the church we began to walk outside as it was begining to rain.Meer informatie

    Douglas Memorial Methodist Church

    After braving the rain we return to the church. Thr other group had not returned yet, so we just hung out in the fellowship hall. Once the other group returned the City Hosts decided to switch our activities around due to the rain. They told us the church need two things to be done. 1) The clothing in the church's thrift store needed to be sorted and organized. We brought all the clothing up from the storage area in the basement, up to the fellowship hall. We then sorted and returned down stairs. 2) They need a few people to do some heavy lifting to move some furniture from one room to another. Following that we all relaxed a little in the fellowship hall.Meer informatie

    Urban Plunge

    Our next activity was Urban Plunge. The goal of this activity was to get an experience of what homelessness was like in DC. From the church we had to find our way to Eastern Markets, once there we find out as much as we could about homelessness from random strangers. We also had to feed everyone in our group plus one additional person lunch for no more than $2 a person.
    The groups were:
    Group 1: Leaders: Grant, Emily, and Kaliah. Students: Josiah, Makenna, Katelyn, and Madison.
    Group 2: Leaders: Calvin, and Greg. Students: Stephanie,Orlando, Antoine, and Daryl.
    Group 3: Leaders: Jess, and Liz. Students: Joshua, Jeremy, JB, and Erica

    Jess pulled out her phone to make sure we were going the right direction, instead of turning right out of the church she told us to turn left, a minute later she realized we actually wanted to go the other way.    Meer informatie

    Eastern Market DC

    As we walked down the market we notice two people sitting on a bench, they both looked like locals because they were not dressed very nicely. We stopped an talked to decide if we should approach them, we could not make a decision so we prayed about it. After the prayer JB and Erica approached the lady meanwhile Jess, Jeremy, Liz, and I looked at one of the shops. JB and Erica did not have much success with the lady see claimed she was not from DC but then later told them she was, so we decided to try someone else.Meer informatie

    Eastern Market Station Square

    We did not see many people as we walked through the market we did not see any one that looked approachable so we ended up at this little park area. Their was many kids selling lemonade for $2, this seemed appealing, but we knew we could not afford it with our $12 budget. As we walked around this area we saw many more stands selling lemonade (The profit when towards the Human Society). At one point we stopped and were talking, Erica turned around and standing right in front of here was a kid dressed in a gorilla costume.Meer informatie

    Marion Park

    As we walked around we found this park and figured it would be a good place to take a break and possible look for some homeless people. Upon entering the park we noticed across the park there was ten or so police cars parked along the street, Jess said maybe a drug bust was going on nearby. Once we sat down on the benches Liz noticed a woman walking two dogs, so she went over and asked to pet the dogs. Liz told the lady what we were doing and she suggested that we check out the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and 11th or 8th street because a lot of homeless gathered there. As we got up to leave the park the lady told us that on second thought we should just go to Pennsylvania Ave because the area she first told us was were the drug addicts hung out.Meer informatie

    Outside Citi Bank

    As we walked back out towards Pennsyvania Ave. We approached a small traffic circle type park. We noticed a few homeless people siting through out the park. We stopped about a half a block away to make a plan of action. We decided to split up our group of six in half and approach two different people, to pervent from scaring them. JB, Erica, and Jess walked into the traffic circle, meanwhile Josh, Jeremy, and Liz walked to two people sitting on a small wall. I went first and introduced myself saying hello. We found out the mans name was Tyrone. Liz took over from their asking him some questions about his life and how he survives. The other 3 people in our groups came over to us they told us the people over where they went were sleeping. As we wrapped up talking with Tyrone we asked him if their was a Seven Eleven nearby and he pointed it out to us.Meer informatie

    Seven Eleven

    We walked down the street and talked and decided that we would get lunch and if Tyrone was still their after we got the food, we would give him lunch. We walked into the Seven Eleven and saw that a large pizza was only $5.50. We ordered two and the one lady behind the counter said the total was $12.20, we were confused why it was not $11, she explained that the $5.50 was without tax. We then began to talk as group we had two options 1) To spend a dollar over our budget or 2) Stick to our Budget. As we explained to the lady that we were not suppose to spend more than $12. The other lady behind the counter overheard so she went to work and figured out that for exactly $11.99 we could get one large pizza, 10 chicken nuggets, and 10 potato cakes. So we waited as the prepared the food, the older lady behind the counter realized they were out of large pizza boxes, so she ran to another seven eleven to get some. But she did not return before the pizza was done so the other lady put two slices in each individual pizza slice boxes. We then left to head back to where we meet Tyrone.Meer informatie

    Outside Citi Bank

    We returned to where Tyrone was sitting, he was still there so we gave him a slice of pizza and offered him a slice. We then also offered him a slice. We also offered the lady who was sitting next to him some food but she inital said no, but once she saw we had plenty food she took some. As we talked with Tyrone, we learned that he used to be a janitor but had been layed off. Soon ones of Tyrones friends named Thomas came over, we still had food so we offered him some as well. Liz tried to share Jesus with Thomas but he seemed to be somewhat mentally handicapped because he believed he was able to teleport.Meer informatie

    Eastern Market

    After completing the challenge of the Urban Plunge we meet up with Calvin and Gregs group. Jess showed Greg the picture of the homeless person we fed and it turns out they fed the exact same person a half sub.A few of them decided to go get coffee at a coffee shop. Meanwhile Liz looked around the Market and the rest of us just relaxed at a picnic table. Once everyone returned we realized we had two hours before we could return to the church so we began wondering how far we were from the capital building. We checked it was about 1.5 miles away, so Greg called Grant to get his opinion and see if their group would want to go to (The Capital was outside of the boundaries set by our city hosts.)
