    It overlooks the Dead SeaThe high mt where the palace was built. It was quite a climb up there! See the path?John was imprisoned at the palace. The hills are steep and dotted with caves. He could have been imprisoned inThis could be the prison. It had three chambers.Notice the goats in the shade under the overhang.

    Herod had a palace high in the hills overlooking the Dead Sea in
    Machaerus. This was where he was entertaining when Salome danced for him and he offered her anything up to half of the Kingdom. She consulted with her mother and because she was discontent with John the Baptist for condemning her marriage to Herod she told daughter to ask for his head on a platter. As John was imprisoned there at the time Herod had no choice but to grant her wish and John was beheaded.Read more
