    Boston

    July 23 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

    Up early after long work week and a short drive to Heathrow. With our new Amex cards, we had access to the Centurion Lounge and got to enjoy breakfast and coffee before our flight. 7 hours to Logan where our Ford Expedition awaited - along with Grandma Connie! We got a massive extended brand new rental car and had a short drive to our Airbnb. After check-in, we went to Target where we bought way too many snacks that they don’t sell in the UK (twinkies, Dots pretzels, muffins, real Cheerios, Doritos and tortilla chips and salsa, nutrigrain bars) and then stopped at a nearby liquor store for American whisky and wine. We spent way too much but I’m sure we will be able to finish it all. After unloading, we walked to a nearby recommended Mexican restaurant for an early dinner.     Freedom Trail and Red Sox

    July 24 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

    We had no problem getting up early. Breakfast in before a short train ride to central Boston. We walked through Quincy Market (next to Faneuil Hall) but it was too early for food before our 10am walking tour. We met up with Nicole - a close friend from San Antonio that just moved to Boston. Together we had a 2+ hour walking tour on the Freedom Trail ending at Boston Commons and then Back Bay. It was a good tour with a lot of history about Boston. We tried a fish place for lunch but it was right next door to a Raisin’ Canes so Mom acquiesced and we enjoy the chicken fingers. Unfortunately, Grandma Connie didn’t tolerate the heat well and got dehydrated enough to make a pit stop at urgent care. After a couple hours, everything checked out okay and we made it back home for a couple hours to relax. After cooling down, we headed back out for the train to Fenway Park. We had right field bleacher seats and beautiful weather for the night game. Balloons for the kids before taking our seats. Got on tv in the first inning when a home run was hit right in front of us. We got to keep score and enjoyed a good game but had to check out after the 7th inning stretch as we were all tired. Train home and we all went right to bed at our last night in Boston.Read more

    Travel day

    July 25 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

    After a late night we packed up in Boston and headed toward Cape Cod. Since no trip to America is complete without a trip to Taco Bell, we stopped off for lunch. Kids and Tige loved every bite.

    We arrived at the house, which was even better than the pictures. Literally everything you would need or want, and a big basement game room for the kids. We shopped and reunited with cousins and took a short walk to a nearby kids beach, which was lovely. We grilled out and relaxed, excited for beach time tomorrow!Read more

    July 26 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

    Finally off to the beach today (after a late morning working on a foot splinter for Hudson). It was low 70s and a bit cool but still fun to play in the sand. We had a private parking pass from our Airbnb and shuttled everyone back and forth. The boys enjoyed the chilly water and we got to throw the football around. We ate snacks and sandwiches before heading back to our home. In the afternoon we played cornhole and frisbee and some Switch before showering and getting ready for a photo shoot. We met our photographer at a private beach club that was closed. It drizzled a little before we walked down the road and got pictures by the sea and on the sand. As we were finishing up, we got caught by a local resident for going on private property. We headed back to the cars where a security guard told us to get out of the club’s lot. As we loaded in, yet another club member (that had driven by during our shoot) came over to our car. We prepared ourselves for another talking when he surprised us by telling the security card to stand down and offered his beach front property for additional photos. He was so kind and when he said his name was Chris Kennedy and drove off, we googled him and found out he is RFK’s son. Though our cameraman had already driven off, we decided to take him up on his offer and drove down the path to a pullover. We got out and crossed the no trespassing chain and got some additional photos with our phones. It was then that Chris came by again and said we hadn’t yet reach his beach and we were on someone else’s land. He pointed us down the private drive and Gideon and Hudson shook his hand as he told us that the house used to be JFKs Cape Cod retreat! We finally made it to the end and got a few more pics before heading off to dinner. A pretty cool experience and the kids were blown away, especially as there are JFK museums and memorials here. Dinner at Black Cat Tavern was delicious and everyone was exhausted when we got home. A laid back day with a great story and Chris Kennedy went out of his way to be so kind. Certainly a photo shoot we will never forget!Read more

    Nantucket

    July 27 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

    We were up at 6 for an early ferry to the island. We all piled into one car, with the boys in the way back and headed down to the water. An hour later we were on Nantucket. We walked to Brandt Point Lighthouse (which was surprisingly small) and then out to Jetties beach, which was a nice 20 minute walk past some lovely 15+ mil oceanside houses. The kids swam a bit and we sat in the beach, before grabbing a quick drink and ubering over to Cisco Brewery. Such a fun spot! Delicious beer and drinks and food trucks. Hudson had his first oyster (loved it), shrimp cocktail and pizza. Tige’s pulled pork was another fav, as were Gid’s sliders and Elliot’s burrito. I had my first lobster roll- incredible!

    After lunch we took a shuttle back to the middle of town and walked and shopped for a few hours. We grabbed the famous handmade ice cream at the juice bar, and hung at the park before our ferry back. Such a lovely day! Heading home now for dinner to celebrate Marsh’s birthday.     Fishing and beach

    July 28 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

    Everyone got to sleep in and have a relaxed breakfast. We had plenty of time before our 1pm fishing expedition. Just a short drive to the port before boarding with 60 other passengers and a 1 hour cruise out to Nantucket Sound. We dropped our lines and almost immediately started to pull fish in (mostly Porgy). We also reeled in a few sea robins - horrible looking fish that we were told (almost too late as Jocelyn tried to take one off the hook) had very painful spines that require a visit to urgent care. Fortunately no one got poked. We moved to a second site which was not as well populated and then made the 1 hour trip back to shore. It was a beautiful day and the kids got to see a seal back at the dock. After getting home, we changed into swimming gear and grabbed our inflatable boat for the beach near our house. It was windy but all the kids enjoyed their attempt at rowing. It was a short walk back to the house for showers before spaghetti dinner by Marsh. After a delicious dinner, Grandma Connie got to open her birthday poster and then wr enjoyed the fire pit and made s’mores before bedtime.Read more

    Martha’s Vineyard

    July 29 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 70 °F

    Up early for the 45 minute drive to Falmouth for our short ferry ride to Martha’s Vineyard. The ferry was much smaller than our last one and we all got our seats as they announced that there would be high winds on the trip. Thus began our terrifying, nausea inducing, clenched fist ride across the Vineyard Sound. Water bashed the front of the boat and we were rocked side to side for what seemed like an endless ride. One of the young passengers in front of us had a mild panic attack but we all made it across without losing our breakfast. We finally arrived to the port and it was raining so we walked down the way to a group of shops to rest and regroup. After a quick recon, we found a bus to Edgartown - the main hub of MV - which made us even more sick with the starts and stops. After another break and ginger ale and meclizine, we walked through town and found the oldest pagoda tree in the US and then went to Carnegie Heritage Center to get out of the rain and learn a little bit about the history of MV. It was a nice chance to regroup. From there, we walked out to Edgartown Harbor Lighthouse - the area looked just like it did in Jaws (though I think it was filmed at a different beach). Unfortunately, we couldn’t get in the lighthouse but it was a nice walk in the drizzling rain. We then picked out a lunch for restaurant - The Wharf - which we later found out was run by an actor from Jaws (the little boy on the yellow raft that was the second one eaten by Jaws). There was signed paraphernalia all over the restaurant and we all ate our fill before doing some shopping around town (Lululemon and Faherty’s). Then our real adventure began. We got on the return bus to the port but were told by the bus driver that our ferry had moved to a different port location due to the poor weather. We confirmed this with a website and two other passengers so we didn’t get off at our planned stop but instead went to Vineyard Haven. When we checked in at the port, the receptionist said that the ferry was never moved and we were at the wrong stop… and we had about 25 minutes before our ferry left. So we all ran back to do over full bus and re-boarding (after asking our driver to confirm via radio that she was wrong and we were supposed to go back to our original port). The bus finally took off but got stuck in traffic and it finally pulled up to our stop with just 4 minutes before our ferry was set to depart. Jocelyn and the kids ran down the road to try to catch it while we stayed behind with mom. Somehow, they made it with no time to spare and begged the crew to wait for the rest of us to catch up. Mom ran as fast as she could (just a few days after being in urgent care for walking too much) and the crew, seeing her effort, waited for us all to board. We even had a few claps from the balcony as we all got on. Relieved to have made our boat, we figured we would deal with the bumpy ride back. We were rewarded with a smooth, calm and enjoyable ride as we watched MV vanish in the distance. All the kids said it was the highlight of their day and I have to agree - beautiful and peaceful and a good reward after being afraid of the return trip all day long. On the way home, Grandma Connie rewarded everyone with a roadside ice cream stop and we ordered pizza in and played cards (blackjack and then Liverpool) while the young kids played Mario Party in the next room. A late night but it all worked out in the end. We get to sleep in tomorrow!Read more

    Rainy day

    July 30 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

    It was a rainy day today so we slept in and made a big breakfast. Joce stayed in with the boys as they were in a heated game of Mario Party while the rest of us braved the rain to hit Barnstable Main Street for some souvenir shopping. Along the way, we stopped in to a sports bar for beers and snacks for the girls. After a couple of hours, we decided to head back. Another round of Liverpool before showers. The rain let up before we drove into town for dinner at Spanky’s Clam Shack. While we were waiting for a table, Joce and I wander around the harbour and found one of the local artisans with a framed painting we both picked out at the same time. Turns out the couple had just moved back from the UK (as the husband was British) and we had a good chat before heading back to dinner with our new purchase. It was a yummy dinner (and we all certainly need to diet when we get back home) and it was a nice night as we walked back to our car. Our last day tomorrow.Read more

    Packing, shopping and airport

    July 31 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

    Marsh and his family were up early at 6 for their drive to the airport. We all got up today goodbye and the boys all took it the hardest after their weeklong bonding. The adults went back to bed but the kids couldn’t sleep. We ate the last of our supplies before showers and packing up. Unfortunately it was a beautiful day and we passed many beachgoers as we left our Airbnb at noon but stopped 45 minutes outside of Boston at a big shopping area. All of our American brands were available including a Barnes and Nobles where Grandma Connie bought books and supplies for the kids while Joce and I enjoyed last minute clothes shopping. We also got a light lunch at Chipotle before making the drive back to Logan where we had to say goodbye to Grandma Connie. After dropping her off, we drove into town to taking the kids to an arcade. Our large vehicle choice finally backfired as we couldn’t fit in any garage and instead went back to the airport. Checked in a few hours early but just time for a quick bite at our final American fast food at Chick-fil-a before boarding our flight home. Overnight trip with planned arrival Saturday am. A wonderful family trip in a beautiful part of the country. Happy Birthday to Mom!Read more
